Hello
It has now been a month that my computer has a DNS problem. I have been scouring the internet for solutions but to no avail.
Symptom: No connections possible even though the Wi-Fi icon doesn't indicate any problems (no exclamation points). I still do a "right click" and "troubleshoot" and after a while it tells me Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server) or The DNS server is not responding, but after this action, the internet starts working again... until the next time.
Sometimes everything works fine for several hours, and other times I have to troubleshoot every 5 minutes, like right now.
What I have tested:
Changed the DNS servers, replaced with "208.67.222.222" and "208.67.220.220".
Cleared the DNS cache with ipconfig /flushdns
.
Nothing works, and it's getting worse. I have run virus scans with Malwarebyte and Eset, but my computer is clean.
Just to write this email, the internet dropped 5 times! To send this message, I have to do the whole process to get a slot of internet.
I hope you can help me resolve this issue.
Thank you in advance.
Configuration: Windows / Chrome 62.0.3202.94

Good evening, I have been in your situation. Last year, I was with SFR, using a wifi connection, I had the nb6v box and constantly had issues with the DNS server. I can assure you that it comes from SFR and the only thing to do is to change operators. I tried countless solutions and downloaded tons of stuff that were useless, I took my computer for repair at Fnac where the wifi worked perfectly with no DNS issues. Since December, I have been with Bouygues Telecom and I have no connection issues with wifi, DNS, etc. After, you shouldn't listen to them at SFR, they are idiots, for them the problems always come from our side.
I'm wondering if it really comes from your computer?
There are several threads about these DNS issues since November 16: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/s/dns
and they are all with SFR....
So either there was an update on the SFRBox, or something else.
In any case, I find that there are quite a few similar threads with the same ISP.

All the usual Wi-Fi disconnection tricks have been attempted: https://www.malekal.com/resoudre-les-deconnexions-wifi/
- uncheck the device disconnection
- driver updates (anyway, it's never the same Wi-Fi card)
- channel change
- remove the Microsoft virtual card
- Disable IPV6
Reinstalling Windows 10 changes nothing and for some, it works well with a phone or on another box.
So it really comes from SFRBox <> Windows 10.
We need to inform SFR:

I have the same problem for over a month, as I mentioned in one of my threads, and it happened a few days after a change of antivirus (coincidence?) even though I've already tried browsing the internet without a firewall or antivirus.
Another PC running Windows 10 at my place works perfectly, like everything else, I doubt it's SFR...

I don't think it's an issue with SFR in my case. My phone as well as my girlfriend's and her computer work perfectly fine on wifi. It's just my PC... moreover, it has the same issues when sharing data with my phone.
I'm going to try the DNS 9.9.9.9, and which one should I put as the secondary?
I'm still on OpenDNS's DNS by the way.
Okay for the wired tests, I'll come back to comment here on the results. Thanks for your help ;)

I still find it quite curious that the majority of the messages come from SFR IPs.
The two common points are Windows 10 and SFR.
You can run MinitoolBox
Send the report to https://pjjoint.malekal.com and provide the link here.
This will allow you to obtain the Wi-Fi card, but they should be different.

At the end, it would also be good to test the two procedures provided in the link to see if it makes any difference.

No, I have 1703, do you think I should do the new one?
Otherwise, I don't think it's the provider, the Wi-Fi on my phone and the central computer connected via LAN both work well..

Don't look any further. There has been a security flaw in the DNS of SFR Boxes since November 2017. It is still not patched!
Type the following command in "cmd":
nslookup -type=txt -class=chaos version.bind "IP of your router"
If the displayed version is lower than 2.78, your connection is vulnerable to DNS spoofing.

Someone can test this: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-34989161-message-dns-probe-finished-no-internet-intempestif#20
In Cortana, type command prompt
In the results, right-click on it and then Run as administrator.
Paste:
netsh interface ipv6 set Teredo enabled
And if it's not better, for the tinkers, go to the management interface of the SFRBox: https://assistance.sfr.fr/internet-tel-fixe/box-nb4/configurer-acces-interface-web-administration.html
Try for example to switch the radio mode to 802.11n
The speed will be worse, but it's just to test if there are any disconnections as well.

Hello,
So for me, after several tests, the problem is similar on my girlfriend's PC and my smartphone. So it's definitely SFR. I wrote to them, and they told me they are diagnosing my box. It's getting better! It still drops but only 2 or 3 times a day!
I think I will wait for them to resolve the issue upstream, I'm glad my computer is fine.
Flx13, did you try calling SFR?

I think that’s what I also think at the beginning of this message that it’s an SFRBox / Windows 10 issue: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-35011961-problemes-dns-sfr#14

It would also be good to mention the region.

I browsed the SFR forum, where there are quite a few problems.
Apparently, disabling WPS can resolve the issue.

In any case, disabling it cannot do any harm, but in principle, it is only active when the right (wifi) button on the device is pressed.
What is the brand and exact model number of the PC?

my girlfriend who has a brand new Lenovo has the same issue
So, the problem likely comes from the modem (SFR)?

Hi,
this is the general idea that emerges from the beginning.
We should play with mtr or winmtr to their DNS to shove the problem in their face and have them involve level 2 (even level 3 since it's so widespread).

Hello everyone,
Similar case for me. SFR even changed the box but the issue is still there only with my laptop on Windows via Wi-Fi. With a cable, I don't encounter the problem, nor do I on our two Android phones...

Hi,
Another new Wifi card.
Can you answer this question: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-35011961-problemes-dns-sfr#45
Try changing the channel: https://assistance.sfr.fr/internet-tel-fixe/wifi-debit/changer-canal-wifi-utiliser-box-thd-sfr.html
try 6, 11, or 7 as a last resort.

Don't bother trying to contact them, they're useless! They treat people like idiots, in addition to being bad faith! For those who don't know me, I was also with SFR and I had that damn DNS server problem too. I switched to Bouygues and I no longer have any issues with that! You should do the same! ;) Have a good evening
Hi there!
I empathize... Exactly the same problem, which has finally been resolved on my end!
For your information, this issue is reportedly encountered by some users of Windows 8.1 and 10 who are with the providers SFR and Orange. I can't remember where I read this, but it's stuck with me ^^
After a week of research, I finally managed to solve the problem by following these steps:
"device manager" --> "network adapters"
double click on "intel dual band ..."
Then two things to do:
1. "Advanced" tab --> in the dropdown menu, select "Wireless mode", then choose "value 4. 802.11b/g"
2. Power management --> uncheck the box "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
I also fixed the DNS by using those from OpenDNS (you can find them on the Wikipedia page, for example...), but I'm not sure this step is mandatory.
And one last thing, if you haven't already done so, remember to manually update your network card driver! Windows doesn't find it on its own, you need to go to the Intel website and download the correct driver.
I hope this will resolve the issue for you and others in the same situation!

For your information, this issue is reportedly encountered by some users of Windows 8.1 and 10 who are with the providers SFR and Orange. I can't remember where I read this, but it's stuck with me ^^
After a week of research, I finally managed to solve the problem by following these steps:
"device manager" --> "network adapters"
double click on "intel dual band ..."

If I count the dozens of cases encountered here, they are all SFR and not Orange...
1. tab "Advanced" --> in the dropdown menu, select "Mode in wire", then choose the "value 4. 802.11b/g"
Great, we have a stable connection, but we have to limit the Wi-Fi to old standards for it to work... hooray! All this because SFR can't manage its boxes properly...
Oh... But I just thought... not all cards allow it... What do we do, then?
And also, for those who are wired, what do they do then? Because here we are talking about Wi-Fi... But some have the same issue wired :-\\

If you need to get angry, it's against the operators and/or Windows, but know that I'm not responsible for this problem... ;)
I was responding to Heimm, as I was in exactly the same situation: wifi, same version of Windows, same error message, same symptoms, etc...
The problem was only present on my PC, while on my smartphone and tablet, everything worked perfectly.
Indeed, this forum only mentions SFR, but it also happens with Orange; one does not exclude the other.
Admittedly, the wifi needs to be "throttled," but with a speed that doesn’t exceed 6Mbps, it doesn’t pose any problem for me. Moreover, it seems that this issue mainly concerns the NB6 box; a box that is mainly used for relatively low speeds.
Certainly, not all cards allow this. Know that at first, I didn’t have access to this setting, until I manually updated the driver (as Windows couldn't find it) via the Intel website. The "wireless mode" setting then appeared.
If the setting still doesn’t appear, it is always possible to do it on the box's interface, in the wifi / Radio tab, but then the throttling will be applied to all connected devices, not just your PC.
Your problem must surely be different from mine...

I'm not worried... since I'm far from being disturbed by SFR where I am.
However, I have conducted dozens of cross tests, all pointing to the same fact: Wi-Fi or cable, the issue is the same. As soon as you switch networks (with another operator), it disappears. :-)
So far (and despite the various forums where I find myself), I have only seen cases related to SFR... besides, the tests I've had the chance to conduct involved SFR on one side, Orange on the other...
Moreover, throttling a Wi-Fi standard shouldn't really influence the functioning (or not) of traffic to DNS servers... so, it's probably a driver issue, which was resolved when you installed the driver to then change the standard managed by your network card.
The issue is related to the NB6, but also to SFR's "La Box"...

I can no longer find the link referring to Orange, but indeed it seems much more frequent with our friend SFR!
Yes, I agree with you, there is no logic between the message "the DNS server is not responding" and the setting changed to make it work again. But believe me, the solved issue did not come from the driver update, as I acquired a PC (Asus Zenbook) 3 days ago, and I encountered the same problem with the network card up to date. Same setting modified, and problem solved once again...
But yes, the issue is indeed related to the NB6... maybe also to Windows, because before I switched to 8.1 and then to 10, I never had this issue.
Here is a link with similar cases (problem also resolved by modifying the wave settings, but this time directly on the configuration of the box):
