Black screen, orange power light

Solved

Hello,
I'm looking for a solution to my brother's problem:
when he turned on his computer normally this morning, he got a black screen, no beep, no image at all, and the power indicator of the monitor stays orange. The hard drive seems to be running, making its usual noise, but the screen shows nothing, not even a small blinking bar.
When he unplugs it from the CPU, he gets the message "no signal." Apparently, the monitor shouldn't be the issue?
The graphics card is new; it's a Radeon 7000. It worked perfectly at the time of installation and has been running for 3 weeks.
When unplugging the graphics card to replace it with the old one, it's the same situation.
Last night, everything was working normally, the PC shut down properly, and this morning, nothing at all, even though he didn't touch it last night.
In your opinion, is there a chance that it’s just the graphics card malfunctioning, or is it possible that the motherboard has burnt out (I don’t see how or when, but well, it’s quite old, like a Pentium II...)
I asked him to try another monitor, but let me know what you think already.
I hope it’s nothing serious; after all the effort I've put into getting him a reasonably priced PC, I'm starting to get fed up with the responsibilities of being an older sister!
Thanks in advance,
Sarah

Hi,

one thing you should check is if you have multiple RAM sticks, try testing with one stick at a time by swapping them.

Often, it’s just a bad contact; taking the sticks out and putting them back in can make everything work normally again.

Re,

In my opinion, it’s the processor, from experience... but I can’t confirm it 100%!
The only way to know is to find another processor that fits your motherboard and test it. If it starts up, you just have to change the processor; if not, it’s the motherboard!
Unfortunately, there’s no other solution...

Affirmative! My dear D2S, if you remove the processor, the screen goes completely black and there's no beeping from the BIOS. The same goes for the motherboard if it's fried.

All this story about a loose connection, I can accept, but if the PC hasn’t moved overnight, I don't see how there could suddenly be a loose connection like that.
Logically, since it was working yesterday, everything should be well connected, with no loose connections this morning?
I'm desperate to see this PC function properly for more than two weeks! It's going to end up out the window, even though it's starting to be a shame since I’ve already replaced or bought almost everything!

as you wish! nothing ventured, nothing gained! ... if you think it's impossible to contact someone, then just throw the PC out the window, I’ll take care of it no problem! I’ll make it work, that way I’ll have 5 on the network! lol

Is the graphics card properly seated?
If there is an integrated graphics card on the motherboard, try connecting the screen to it by removing the graphics card that might be malfunctioning.
If there is no integrated graphics card, try using the old one.
You can also try testing with another screen.

try flashing it, if not maybe the CGraphique

Hi,

I experienced the same thing with a PC, and without wanting to scare you, it was the processor that failed...
To be sure about your graphics card, test it on another PC; that's the best option...
If it works normally, you don't have many choices left; it's either the processor or the motherboard!
Good luck to you

Hi, I currently have the same problem that occurred last week, and I tried everything but I don't really know if it's the processor or the motherboard.
Everything else has been checked, it really comes from the motherboard but I still don't know if it's a virus or human error...

Bye

re,
your procedure is good "the druid without the potion" but it doesn't allow to detect whether the problem comes from the motherboard or the processor because it's definitely one of the two in my opinion ...

I understood you were joking, "the druid without the potion," I was just kidding too...
So, if I understood correctly, if there's no beep, it's either the CPU or the motherboard that's dead...
I'm eagerly waiting for the test results, after that I'll have to find someone to install a new motherboard and CPU, because both are too old to only replace one of them...
Anyway, that's all I haven't changed yet, since the hard drive, burner, graphics card, Ethernet card... are brand new. So, it would really be a shame to throw it out the window...

Especially since my brother just called me to say that it's working again... yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have no idea where that outage was, because during a final restart attempt, the PC turned on, as if nothing had happened. I wasn't there; otherwise, I might know more, but my brother isn't that knowledgeable yet... I advised him never to turn it off again, so it doesn't happen again...
No, I'm joking, but I would really like to know what happened... I'm really starting to suspect that there are negative energies in this house; it must be the ghost of the previous inhabitant, who died in his bed and can't stand modernity... Because the last time, I had installed everything on that PC, antivirus, various software, two days of work, and when I got there, nothing worked, impossible to restart, the hard drive had burned out on the way....
I hope it holds up!
Otherwise, I'll see you soon :) .

I imagine that since the time this message was posted on this site, you and your brother must have bought a computer, or even become computer scientists... It's a shame, however, that you haven't provided a solution because I have exactly the same problem and it's driving me crazy!!! Anyway, I just wanted to feel less alone in this technological world that overwhelms me.

Me too, same problem with an old PC from 9 years ago that was working fine (Pentium 1 at 866 MHz), I've tested the hard drive, it works. I'm going to test the memory (a single 500 MHz stick) but it seemed to me that characteristic beeps indicated a memory issue.

Hello,

I installed the new power supply and now the screen is black: no signal input.
What should I do?
Thank you

I have a recurring problem with a black screen when starting my computer (Windows Vista) with a code that appears in the lower right corner: 43AC. This issue does not happen every time but occurs regularly. I noticed that when this happens, the orange light on the column does not work. I press the reset button on the column and everything goes back to normal. But am I doing the right thing? I'm a bit worried and would like to know the meaning of the code that appears.

The other 4, you also got them from desperate people who threw them out the window because you told them it wasn't worth fixing?

I asked my brother, who knows nothing about it, to check his PC thoroughly at one of his friends who has been assembling PCs since Saturday. This is promising... But I really don't want to make the 80-mile round trip only to find out it was a mistake. I hope, but I don't believe it, that it will lead to something...

How can we tell if the motherboard or the processor are working properly?
The motherboard fan is still working, what worries me is that there's not a single beep at startup... That's a bad sign, isn't it?

To think I changed the hard drive two and a half weeks ago, because after two days spent configuring the machine, once I got there, it didn't restart... That I had to reconfigure the whole thing once the new hard drive was installed... that it's only been two weeks since it was working, and now, a relapse... aaaarrrgghh...
Only two weeks left before his return, and still no PC!

I hope you understood that I was joking!

In cases like this, the testing procedure is:

1- Remove the hard drive and then start the PC, if it’s okay = fault found

2- Remove the memory sticks one by one, if it’s okay = fault found

3- Remove the cards: network, modem, etc... if it’s okay = fault found

And so on for the rest of the equipment, just to find the culprit.

That's how we proceed, I don’t have the PC in my hands so I can’t tell you more.

See you later if needed,

Thank you, druid; your advice is good for me. I just had the same problem, and it was a memory stick.

Hi, check the RAM, the problem could worsen if you have 2 sticks and one of them is burnt out, risking losing the other.

Hello, I have the same problem. My computer turns on, but sometimes my screen doesn’t. However, when I connect my TV in clone mode, my computer screen is black but it works on the TV. The TV is connected to the graphics card, so it shouldn't be a graphics card issue. Could someone help me solve this problem? Thank you.
