Hello,
I just got my sister's laptop back which won't start anymore. So I did a reinstallation of Windows XP Home Edition on it myself without success. Then I installed Win XP by changing the folder name. The laptop starts, but unfortunately, I have a folder that won't open. I even tried the Windows assistant and was told to follow these steps:
"a. Click Start, then My Computer.
b. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options, then the View tab.
c. Under Advanced settings, uncheck the box Use simple file sharing (recommended), then click OK."
The problem is that I couldn't find the option "USE SIMPLE FILE SHARING."
I can't find the Security tab?
I followed this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben%3B810881
Anyway, I'm lost!!! Thanks for the help.
The data is extremely important.
Any help????

you go to the control panel, tools, folder options, view
disable simple file sharing
return to the folder, right-click, properties, security, ok, advanced, owner, click on your name, replace the owner,
ok, yes, ok,
ignore the messages stating that you do not have rights on this folder
if you cannot find the security tab, you have the option to download this tab from the net
disable simple file sharing
return to the folder, right-click, properties, security, ok, advanced, owner, click on your name, replace the owner,
ok, yes, ok,
ignore the messages stating that you do not have rights on this folder
if you cannot find the security tab, you have the option to download this tab from the net
The folder is not accessible. Access denied.
To resolve this problem, you need to disable simple file sharing and take ownership of the folder:
1. Disable simple file sharing:
1. Click Start, then My Computer.
2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options, then click on the View tab.
3. Under Advanced settings, uncheck the box Use simple file sharing (recommended), then click OK.
2. Right-click on the folder you want to take ownership of, then click Properties.
3. Click on the Security tab, then click OK on the Security message if it appears.
4. Click on Advanced Settings, then on the Owner tab.
5. In the Name list, click on your username, on Administrator if you are logged in as an administrator, or on the Administrators group.
If you want to take ownership of the contents of this folder, check the box Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
6. Click OK.

I wonder if simple file sharing can be disabled in the Home version of XP; I don't really know, but that could explain the problem.
In any case, the "enable simple file sharing (recommended)" option can be found in the menu bar of My Computer, Tools -> Folder Options, under the View tab, and at the bottom of the new window, you should have a list of options to enable or disable. The function you're looking for is IN ANY CASE the last one on the list if it's available.
Moreover, the Security tab is only available once this option is disabled. If you can't disable it, there is no way to adjust the security settings of each folder for sharing.
Good luck!

Hi everyone,
I had exactly the same problem and I found a solution. Apparently, it’s a bug in IE (don't ask me where it comes from, I have no idea)
I suppose when you want to access the computer in question, you either type \\computer_name, or use network favorites > etc...
The solution that works for me and that I'm sure will work for you too is to type in IE or Windows Explorer:
\\ipaddressofthemachine (e.g.: \\192.168.0.2)
To find it out: start > run > cmd then in the console type: ping machine_name
I hope this will solve the problem for some of you!!

Hello,
just for information for those who do not have access to their local drive or for a file because it shows up ".. is not accessible, access denied".
And this also concerns those who tried to install security but only for the local drive (which doesn't often happen with a file) even though you have selected the owner, you get a message saying "unable to save permission changes"
THERE IS ONE SOLUTION:
so simple, think of the command prompt, you can do a lot with it lol well the suspense has lasted long enough,
for beginners the prompt is located in start/run/cmd
there you go after you type the command --> cacls :the drive or file\ /the action to be taken better to redefine access to the owner name: the access field being the best total,
example: I had a problem with my local drive C and I set the access under jerem (the owner) to full access which gives cacls c:\ /G Jerem:F
in case you don’t know your owner number then replace it with that of the pc, to find out type in the command prompt --> hostname and replace jerem in the previous example with the name obtained.

Hi,
your command line under cmd worked very well and I regained access to my folders, but the problem is that this operation was not applied to the subfolders and the files within them.
My question is: how can I apply the changes to ALL the subfolders as well as their files?
Just a small note: the changes apply to folders and the first level of subfolders. It’s from the 2nd level of subfolders that the changes are not taken into account. Do I need to apply this operation to each of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th... level subfolders, or is there a way to handle the entirety of a directory?
In my case, it is the "My Documents" directory, and it contains subfolders at 5 or 6 levels or more, for a total of 11,500 files (21 GB). If I have to do them all one by one, it will take a long time... there must be a way to handle everything at once...
PS: this issue occurred after a reinstallation of XP

A little precision: the changes are applied to the folders and the first level of subfolders. It's starting from the second level of subfolders that the changes are not taken into account. Do I need to apply this operation to each of the second, third, fourth-level subfolders, or is there a way to process the entirety of a directory?

For those with XP home:
To display the "Security" tab when viewing the properties of a folder, download the "Security configuration manager" from Windows NT4 at this address: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/tools/scm/scesp4i.exe. Do not run this executable (it will be rejected anyway), but extract it (with Winzip or Winrar for example) into an empty folder (for example c:\NT4). Right-click on the "setup.inf" file, and choose "Install". Several files will be copied, and Windows will ask if you want to replace certain files: SAY "NO" TO ALL! Once these copies are complete, the "Security" tab will be available in the folder options.

Good evening to Mr. WindowsWarrior, and to everyone.
I just experienced this same kind of problem "Folder is not accessible. Access denied." + Folder properties "size: 0, file: 0, following the merging of two logical partitions (" with the help of !!! PARTITION MAGIC), to recover a remaining unallocated partition, as I couldn't do it under Win XP since I had already created 4 primary partitions. So, impossible to create a new partition. Once the merge was completed, the old partition created by PM turned into a folder, and I couldn't access this damn folder anymore. I managed to recover the inaccessible files with a file recovery utility and transferred all my files to this newly created partition. Aside from the time I wasted, almost two days. (Yes! It’s very long to analyze and recover all this little world). I’m working on cleaning up my inaccessible folder (old partition), because despite its size: 0 and file: 0, I had nearly 70GB of "ghost" files that were unnecessarily occupying my merged partition. So I opened a DOS session "cmd". Positioned on the "drive" of pseudo ghost files and in the directory formerly of the partition. Well! That's strange, I have access to all this little world under DOS, really strange. Some "DIR /B/S" and so on. Let’s go for the fateful "DEL *.* /S/Q". It works perfectly, it’s great. Back to Explorer to see what’s going on. My famous old-partition folder that I supposedly deleted is still present and recalcitrant to opening. So there, I forbid you from laughing!!! It’s not funny!!! On to "My Computer". And there, wow! Hell and damnation!!! I HAD DELETED EVERYTHING (I’m tired of these capital letters and apparently "it doesn't look good!!!") that I took so long to recover. Yes, I had cleaned up well but in that freshly created partition. Well eventually, I allow you to laugh out loud. That’s why this process worked so well, under the DOS session. By the way, I’m going to allow myself to do so too. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Finally, because it has to end, I consulted the Net "with" the magic words "Folder, etc...", and selected this topic. At the beginning of this one, no convincing solution. And then finally the PEARL, the most beautiful in the world, provided by Mr. WindowsWarrior. In five minutes, the situation was cleaned up (Downloading javascript:;ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/tools/scm/scesp4i.exe.
javascript:; + Application of the simple, short, and precise operating mode 'not like me !!!)). So, I have access to my old-partition folder with my "ghost" files that have rematerialized, as if by magic and of course, a poorly managed partition at the start that is brand new now!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Well, regarding PARTITION MAGIC, meh. I think I'm going to Mr. ACRONIS who seems more flexible and has simultaneously more sophisticated and easier-to-implement features.
I want to thank Mr. WindowsWarrior, as well as CCM.net, A BIG THANK YOU!!! Yes! Yes! It’s sincere.
P.S.: To the moderator of this forum, I apologize for the length of this account and perhaps that it’s not in its place here. But I wanted to express my thanks.

The same problem and your procedure worked super well.
Before finding your solution, I managed to access the content of the folder by searching for the name of a file that was definitely located there using the Windows search utility... And that way I could access my stuff. If that can help...
But your solution is definitive so it's 100 times better!!

Hello,
I had the same issue of access denied after installing the security tab and changing the owner.
The problem was that my username was not in the list found in: Properties> Security tab> User names or groups.
To add this name, here’s the procedure: click on "Add".
You will then see a "Select users or groups" window:
In the field "Enter the object names to select, enter the name of your Windows session (to know this, click on the start menu and at the top of the dropdown menu your session name should appear, for example in my case it’s "Philippe".
Enter your session name in the "Enter the object names to select" field.
Then click on "Check names": the full name should then appear, for example in my case: SONY-PCG\Philippe. Click OK.
You are then back in the security tab: click on Apply.
The procedure described previously should now work: Advanced settings> Owner tab: select your name which should now appear (sony-pcg\Philippe) and check "Replace owner of subcontainers and objects..." if your box does not remain checked, it means you forgot to click on "Apply" in the previous step!

Hello,
I want to thank Phillipe!!!!
For several days now, I’ve been desperately trying to recover data from a hard drive to put on a third one, and all the methods I found online didn’t work... I was left with just one solution:
Recovering 200 GB of data using Linux and CDs (what a hassle) or buying an external hard drive since my third hard drive is also in NTFS and Linux doesn’t grant write permissions on it....
So I was stuck until Phillipe showed up :)
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You’re not a god, but almost ^^

Hi, is there a way to apply the entire method (security tab, change the name...) to all subfolders of a folder, or do I have to do it file by file?
Thank you, thank you for all your advice! I managed to open my disk, finally!!! (thanks to your advice on security allowing users)
What's strange is that a few days earlier, it was working fine, and I didn't change any settings, and suddenly, I had to reauthorize... I don't understand everything, but it works!
Probably the too much security of Vista!

Hello, I downloaded a music file. After that, the antivirus warned me that there was a virus. So I deleted it, but the file was still there. I could still listen to the music without any problems, but at the bottom of the list, there was "setup.exe". I clicked on it and now it's blocked, and no matter what I do, it says "access denied" and talks about authorization. It's a zip file. Thank you in advance for your help. Bye.
Hi,
I have a document that won't open; it gives me this message (folder is not accessible, access denied). If you could help me quickly, thank you in advance.

Good evening
try going to the firewall tab "Exceptions"
and check under "Programs and Services" "File and Printer Sharing"
as for the security tab, it can be downloaded from the net: type Windows security tab
to regain access to the folder, I explained it on page 1

Good evening. I have roughly the same issue. Except that unlike everyone else, I can no longer download software since then. I am on Windows XP. I first did a restore because I had lost all my desktop items and it told me that I didn't have access rights. Hm.. so after this restoration, I managed to recover my desktop. Well now, when I want to go to my documents (images, videos, etc.), access is still denied. I don’t understand; I did the manipulations that you suggested in the command prompt and I still haven’t resolved this folder issue. This problem arose after creating a password for "ADMIN" (which I am the holder of myself). However, in the end, I removed it because it was unnecessary. And since then, my computer is in "access denied" mode.
I would like, if possible, great help and attention to this problem because I absolutely need my computer for work (just like everyone else, haha.)
I look forward to your responses..
Have a good end of the night my dear friends, the computer whizzes.

HELLO HELP ME please
I just formatted my C drive, and when I try to open my files stored on the D storage drive, I am notified that it is impossible to open the document and that I do not have access rights. When I check the properties of these files, it says they are encrypted and that only the user of my previous session before the formatting is allowed to access these files. So I am trying in vain to add the user from my new session, and it tells me there was an error during this operation.....

Hello,
I have a big problem...
I've been using Resco File Explorer 2003 for about a year to encrypt my folders.
The problem is that I have one folder that I can no longer open; it tells me "RESCO CRYPTING ERROR IN FILE..." "WRONG PASSWORD OR FILE IS CORRUPTED." However, I have no doubt that my password is correct. The issue is that I absolutely need this folder. Please, if anyone knows how I can open it, let me know.

Good evening everyone, I have a big problem!!!!!!
I transferred my data: music.... to another hard drive because I was going to tattoo my machine (Packard Bell). So far everything was fine until the moment I wanted to put my files back after tattooing it, I see empty folders and access denied!!! Panic!!!
Since these are protections that prevent me from reading my data, I would like to know how to break them with, if possible, a free software!!
Thank you, you would be a great help to me
Best wishes!!

I have the same damn problem. After reinstalling XP following a format, I just discovered that some folders, only certain ones, located on external NTFS drives are locked (empty, 0, etc.). I would like to understand how this could have happened since I never asked for anything regarding this. I noticed that on the FAT32 drives, there don't seem to be any folders of this kind. I have 8 external drives, out of which 3 are NTFS, and those are the ones causing me trouble. This XP is a real pain, and despite the "Security" tab being added, it doesn't change anything except for the folders created a long time ago, but for the locked files that made the folders airtight, there's nothing to be done except delete them. How can I regain access to these folders in general without having to search for them one by one??? I think I can advise all of you to opt for FAT32 when buying external hard drives. One, because it is compatible with many platforms, and two, because we don't seem to have this kind of security problem (after pages and pages of forums read, which are not always very clear by the way); however, we are limited to a maximum of 4GB for the size of a file. But who generates files larger than 4GB??? It’s only during DDLs with files messed up and zipped in any way or for video editing fans. Anyway, why and how??? Thanks in advance for your responses. ;)
