Word - Footnote too high Solved

Question

Hello,

I am working with Word 2002 and I have some issues with footnotes. I insert references throughout my text, and the notes appear correctly at the bottom of the relevant page, so far no problem.

The issue arises when I print: the footnotes are much too high, and I have at least 5 cm left below. Everything looks normal on screen, but when printing, the page is only filled to 3/4! I tried adjusting the margins but it didn’t change anything...

Is it possible to modify the height of the footnotes? What could be causing this problem?

Hello,

You need to click on View > Normal and then on View > Footnotes.

At the bottom of the page, there is a frame with the footnotes and a box with a black arrow. Click on it and select the separators. You then need to delete all the paragraph breaks that are displayed.

Once finished, you click on Close.

It's mind-boggling, I searched on forums, in Word's help, in Word itself, but nothing... I'm surely not the first to encounter this problem? Am I?

In the File tab, go to Layout, enter the Layout tab, and that's where you can adjust the margin of the header and footer. Finally, this only applies if your notes are inserted in the footer.

I tried, the problem is the same, but that's normal my notes are "footnotes" and not "footer".

Yes, these are footnotes, but Word also takes the footer into account, I suppose, so if the footer margin is reduced to the maximum, it should logically move your endnotes down by that amount.

I looked in Word's help, and at no point is there any mention of configuring this location strangely.

In fact, one wonders if it is configurable. According to the help, if a footnote is too long, it will automatically continue on the next page, which means that the footnote space is limited in size, and it may also imply that its size and location are fixed.

That said, so many things are configurable that it seems quite absurd.

I did a test by setting the bottom margin to 0 cm (file/layout/margin/bottom margin), it doesn't change anything at all, my footnotes are still as high (there's still at least 5 to 7 cm of white space at the bottom of the pages, below the note)... I find this really strange.

I did another test with a different text file, in which I inserted a footnote. It is well at the bottom of the page.

The troubling thing is that the margins are set exactly the same (2.5 cm)... I'm starting to worry about my mental health! I'll keep looking and if I find it, I'll report it...

By any chance, after you typed your last note, did you hit ENTER?
That would logically add an extra blank line.

I just noticed something interesting:

if I copy one of the pages of my document (with footnotes), paste the text into a new document, and then print... well, it’s fine!

original version:
the text is very small, the footnotes are too high

test version:
the text is normal, the footnotes are too

Even more puzzling: The styles and formatting are exactly the same (margins, paragraphs, sections, fonts, character sizes...) but the two documents are completely different when printed. My problem is solved but I couldn't even explain why or how!!! It would be interesting to know...

I looked and there were spaces under my notes, and indeed there were, but when printing it makes no difference, still a blank space under the note... strange, right?

I noticed something weird:
When I place the cursor at the end of my footnote and delete the spaces, after a while the cursor freezes and a message tells me: Invalid action for footnotes. But sometimes there is no message, and I delete into the void endlessly... I really don’t understand the logic of Word.

ps: There was a comment inserted in the middle of the document that caused all the notes and text to shift!

Yes, there are things that are sometimes difficult to explain in Word and Excel. Often, you have to tinker to achieve the desired result.

There are still some bugs!!! But they remain accessible tools for the average person and very powerful... For an enthusiast, it's better to move on to something more advanced (like R, for example)

I encountered the same issue, and the solutions proposed above didn't work.
I deleted the problematic footnote and the section break, then I reinserted the footnote and then the section break.

Problem solved!

Personally, I have Office 2007 and the writing of my footer was too high (who knows why!). I simply managed to lower it by clicking on it; my footer turned blue and in my taskbar at the top in Design, I set my footer to 0 and it's perfect. That's the only solution I found.
