Rakuten
Rakuten, a major player in French e-commerce, plans to close its doors by the end of 2026, a decision affecting nearly 180 employees. Once a serious competitor to Amazon and Fnac, Rakuten has suffered from their dominance and the rising power of Chinese apps. Despite attempts to relaunch and invest in improvements, the company failed to reverse the trend, leading to a significant decline in customers and site traffic. What impact do you think this closure will have on the French e-commerce ecosystem?

If Rakuten had continued to charge PriceMinister's rates (fees for individual sellers), they would have had many more customers. The commissions they take are exorbitant, so except for books or collectible items at high prices, selling a book for less than 3€ costs you at least 0.50€, (fixed margin, proportional margin and margin on shipping costs !!!)

And even if we paid 0.50€ in commissions for a 3€ item (the sale being unprofitable for no one), would we die?

Rakuten did not just (or did not limit itself to) second-hand sales but also hosted, like Amazon, Cdiscount or whatever you want, a certain number of Market Places.

I bought one or two software licenses there at competitive prices and without commissions.

"No commissions" ? of course there are. It is supported by the seller so you don't see it, but in the end it is you who paid for it ;)
