Hello,
I have a connection problem with my email accounts on Outlook under Vista. Everything was working fine until I started receiving error messages 0x80042109 for sending and 0x80042108 for receiving.
I tested the incoming and outgoing mail servers of my accounts (Gmail, Free, and Wanadoo) using another computer but on the same Internet connection, and it works fine. I also tried using the same computer (the one having problems) but with a different user, by recreating the email accounts, but I encountered the same issue. In the active Firewall, I can't find anything specific to unblock for email. I'm using Kaspersky Antivirus, which seems fine as well. But maybe there's a magic box to check? There hasn't been any installation on the PC between the time it was working and now. One last point: in the additional settings of my email accounts, under the "advanced options" tab, the port numbers correspond to the PC that is functioning.
Thank you for all your suggestions.
Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0

Hello,

same problem as many apparently. I'm with Orange and I don't want to use the Orange email. I've set up my Outlook (on Vista) to receive my Free emails.
I have no problem receiving but it gets stuck when sending. "Outlook cannot connect to the outgoing mail server ... Error 0x80042109)

Thank you for your help.

Good evening,

It's normal, since you're with Orange you can't send emails with your Free account
So for your outgoing mail
smtp: you put smtp.orange.fr with the username orange and the password orange and for your reply email address you put your Free address

Hello,

It is entirely possible to send emails from an account different from your ISP. For example, sending an email from a Free email address, even if your ISP is Orange.

However, it is necessary to adjust 2 settings. Here’s how to do it for Outlook:
1- In "Advanced settings" / "Outgoing server" tab: check the box "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication," (and keep "Use the same settings as my incoming mail server" checked)
2- In the advanced tab, change the value 25 to 587 next to "Outgoing SMTP server."

In 7 out of 10 cases when the user can receive emails but not send them, this solves the problem. The goal is actually to identify oneself to the sending server. This mechanism, which is increasingly used, is designed to combat spam.
