VERY VERY SLOW Internet... Solved

Question

Hello, here is my problem. For some time now, my internet connection has been so slow that I'm about to go crazy.  I contacted my provider; I have no modem issues, I've even tested my speed on their website (videotron.com). It's excellent... My connection is Extreme High Speed, and once every two times, the pages won't even load. And when they do load, I feel like I'm using a 56k...  I used CCleaner, which I run every day by the way. I unchecked the option to erase everything older than 48 hours.  I have Spybot, up to date, vaccinated, last scan in normal mode and safe mode, it found nothing, no spyware.  AVG Anti Spyware, same thing, safe mode and normal mode, still nothing.  Adaware, same result, safe mode and normal mode, still nothing.  Windows Defender, same thing!!  Avast… And yes, still nothing.  Each scan was done for the entire hard drive, + registry, etc.  My OS is WinXP Service Pack 2 My PC is Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz 2GB RAM DDR X 2  Please, someone help me, I’m fed up. I’m two seconds away from formatting because I've had enough, what scares me, however, is that even if I format, I'm not sure it will fix the problem. I know that the message isn't recent, but since I've just solved a major slowdown issue, it will help those who are researching on the Internet to find a solution.

For several weeks, I had significant slowdowns on the Internet to the point that videos weren't loading fast enough to be played. I found the remedy today, and to be honest, I wasn't very hopeful.

To test the speed of the connection, you can go to the following address: https://fast.com/. Note the information so you can compare it later. I, for my part, went from 182 Kbit/s to 1462 Kbit/s!!!! Unbelievable.

So, actually, you just need to:

Defragment my hard drive (meaning reorganizing the files so they are less scattered). For this, right-click on the drive letter (under "explorer," for example) and choose "properties," then in the "tools" tab, select "defragment now." It takes a long time (several hours); but in the end, you gain a lot. In the worst case, you can stop halfway and continue later.
Run Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, and AdwCleaner to check that the system is healthy;
Disable browser extensions (AdBlock, etc.) to see if it improves loading speed;
Close background programs;
Try restarting the router;
Test with a wired connection (Ethernet) if possible, to check if the problem is not coming from the Wi-Fi.

I hope this will solve the problem for others.

At worst, it won't hurt to reorganize the hard drive a bit.

hello heeeeey! I'm here asking for help because I think I'm going to lose it^^ I can't navigate properly on either IE or Firefox. When I open the homepage, no problem, it displays. But as soon as I open a page, the internet page turns white and the loading bar at the bottom progresses at an extremely slow pace... actually, the page never shows up. I can only close IE. Only Google and a few other sites are accessible to me (but when I type a search in Google, same result, the page goes blank.)
I've used CCleaner -> nothing, Spybot -> nothing, and Bitdefender didn't find anything that could fix my problem.
I'm begging you help me :'( I absolutely need to avoid reformatting! (I'd get accused by my dad of messing up the computer again)

Hello Sönikk,  Have you tried defragmenting your hard drive as I explained in the previous email? Rest assured, it has nothing to do with formatting; it simply reorganizes your hard drive so that the files are not scattered. It can take several hours for it to completely defragment your hard drive. I believe this could solve your problem. In any case, you will definitely gain speed.  Yann

Thank you, Yann, for your response! I will defragment it tonight hoping it will change something.. But still, some operations can be done, for example "I am lucky" in Google, the page displays (that's how I access this site). And sometimes my computer has a glitch, the taskbar disappears for a few seconds, the screen freezes, then everything goes back to normal. From that moment on, the internet becomes accessible. But this kind of situation has happened to me twice, even though my computer has been like this for 2 weeks...  SöniKk

Have you tried this? I found it in another topic (the problem seemed similar to yours).
tools menu>internet options>general tab>temporary internet files>click settings button >
"Check for a newer version of the visited page?" = > if it is checked "on every visit"
choose > "automatically".
Ok > restart IE.

Hello, I have a problem. My PC is slow right from startup... then on the blue screen where it says welcome, it shows a timeout and when it launches... it displays an error....  Windows cannot find the following file:  c:\windows\system32	ools\folder.exe. I can't seem to solve this problem even though I have tried reinstalling my Windows XP multiple times, it's always the same thing.... please help me......

I've had a very, very slow connection since yesterday morning and I don't know why it suddenly happened.
After running an Avast scan, I deleted some crap, restarted, but the connection is still very slow. So I decided to format this morning and reinstall XP

I just happened to fall here by chance!.. I suggest first of all to avoid downloading a bunch of stuff (so-called miracle programs) that will only risk overloading the RAM even more.. // If your PC has a 'complete' antivirus in normal working order.. and your firewall is activated (sometimes it deactivates by itself? I suspect some spyware programs) (so keep an eye on it, as well as its settings regularly) (etc..) the problem comes from elsewhere.. = like annoying programs that launch and activate themselves = gobble up RAM.. and prevent your commands from functioning freely-normally.. //
First:
(my legend V²=LeftClick, Csl = console, Dmr = Start, Ptr = Settings, PdC Control Panel, L. = submenu) (you need to be on the 'classic menu' of the Control Panel) then you do:

*simply: Clear the 'temporary files': go to IE & do: > tools L. Internet Options > Csl OI / General L. BrowsingHistory L.'Delete'
That's already one point, but; in the meantime, check on this console (OI) if the security settings of the other tabs are well configured (security, *Privacy *Content etc.. (take note 'txt' of everything you 'touch' so if there's an error you can go back thanks to your notes..) :/
But you can (right away), or will be able to: also do Internet Options / Advanced > L.reset.. Which normally sets IE back to default settings.. and cleans everything!..........simply.........
Then better:
_everything you download etc.. generally 'activates by itself_', to avoid this you need to disable: one of these functions (or look for yours which should be similar) next:

*Dmr > Ptr > PdC L.Home Windows > Csl AW L.Show computer details L. Show more Detail > Csl System L.Performance Index > Csl Performance Information and Tools L.Left Panel; V²Manage Startup Programs > Csl Software Explorer (Windows Defender) > Select the Programs and: °Enable or °_Disable_.. or °Delete

*But also check in the functions of the program itself if there's a 'Launch or Not' at Startup function > it's better (like for Messenger which has its internal function) ...

*DLAP/ in my new Akoya: ??? Impossible! G WinXP-SP3 that I don't know yet and I haven't found yet (so different from SP2);.

it's not working from the first time, since with each new version Windows messes everything up just to 'arrange' things for us
If you manage, it will remove all the programs that clutter the HDD when you haven't asked for them.. and save the PC

*PFWAP/ for: Windows Firewall (Authorization of a Program to communicate through it) / Open the Windows Firewall. > Under the Exceptions tab, under Programs and services, check the box of the program or service to allow, then click OK. > If the program (or service) to allow is not listed: > Click Add a program. > In the Add a program dialog box, click on the program to add, then click OK. The program will appear selected under the Exceptions tab, under Programs and services.

Hello,  I came to this forum because I was experiencing the same issues as you with my connection. I tried most of the suggested solutions which didn’t solve my problem. Then I uninstalled MSN from my hard drive because I heard someone say that MSN was causing issues on their computer. Since I didn't have any other solution, I gave it a try. And since then... fantastic. I have no more bugs and the internet works perfectly. I hope this helps you.

Euh, having 2 antiviruses is pointless, it's probably what is slowing down the opening of your pages because your PC is doing double the work, and yes, it will analyze the requests for each antivirus, so double the work means double the slowness...
