Hello,
Indeed, when you ask a question, you try to be precise and you start by giving your version. The "Alphabet" footer is a model of footer that can be found in the list of footers in Word 2010 but not in Word 2013 for example...
A footer is subject to the theme color. Therefore, the logic is that to change the color of the footer, you change the theme color in order to maintain consistency in the document, and to be able to modify it easily if you change your mind.
Page Layout tab, Themes group => theme colors.
Now if you insist on doing it manually, you go to the footer, display the Borders and Shading dialog box, and change the border color. But, well, it's not a good idea!
