Black screen on canon powershot a70

Hello,

Here I have a Canon Powershot A70 digital camera. When I turn it on, it displays a black screen in shooting mode, and the pictures taken are also black. I pressed the DISP button but without success.

Where does the problem come from? Is it internal (bad connection)?

I hope you can help me, and I thank you in advance for your attention.

      Hello
Despite the message from "leportuguech" on 29/11/2007, as of 13/08/2012, the CANON service network no longer offers free repairs and additionally, they no longer have replacement CCDs... so it's trash!
Instead of a CANON PowerShot SX40HS, I will take a NIKON Coolpix P510.
For me, CANON is: out! I don't want to leave my money with the same bandits twice!

    Solutions
We thank you for your trust.

In rare cases, some CCDs used in Canon digital cameras and camcorders may have a defect that affects the image.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Canon is committed to repairing free of charge products that present this defect.

Canon wants to inform its customers about the details of the situation and share the steps taken to resolve it.

    Details of the situation:
In a few very rare cases, there have been reports of detached internal wires from the CCDs used in the affected products, in conditions of high temperature/humidity.

The signal is then not correctly transmitted by the CCD in shooting mode. This results in abnormal outcomes such as:

    * Images do not appear.
    * Images have abnormal colors.
    * Images are distorted.

The LCD screen confirms these symptoms.

    Solution:
We strongly recommend users who have observed these symptoms to contact their Canon service center.

The affected products will be repaired free of charge if the detachment of the internal wires of the CCD is confirmed.
    Update date: 07-Jun-07

The press release was sent by colissimo (8 euros) with the device completely bare, without CF card, and without battery along with a small letter to an authorized CANON repairer, for the center, well, at your choice see the list provided by the visitor on October 20.

I tested the one in COURBEVOIE, they sent it to Vilma and three weeks later it was repaired, the cost? 8 euros for the colissimo!!!

    Hello
good news for those with this problem, I also have a Powershot A70 and the screen failed, all functions worked but it was a black screen!!!
While searching a bit on the internet, I discovered that it was due to a sensor problem due to a manufacturing defect by Canon. If your device is under warranty, that’s great, it will be replaced, but often, like in my case, it’s not!! So I called Canon's customer service directly, and they explained to me that to confirm the defect, you need to take the device to an authorized Canon service center, where they will verify the defect and either repair the device or exchange it for another one!! In my situation, they offered me a Powershot A630!!!
It's useless to go to the after-sales service because they do not necessarily communicate with Canon and often they are not aware of the problem, plus this affects a large number of devices, around 30, with the list available on Canon's website!
    Good luck to everyone!

    Hello everyone
it could be possible that it's a sensor issue because a certain series of sensors mounted on different brands have become detached!
a list has been published on "chasseur d'images" of the affected series
    to be checked

    Hello everyone
I have an A80 and the same type of problem, except that the screen is mostly white and I have a frame (about 1mm) where I can make out the image and therefore white in the center. When I push the tilting screen towards the hinge that connects it to the body of the device, I manage to recover the image, and the photos taken are normal. However, when the screen is white, the photos are also white. So I think it's a loose connection. The problem occurred again today, which is why I'm on the forum, but now (after pressing as explained) it works correctly again. But still, it's not great! I've had it for three years, and aside from that, I'm really happy with it, but I'm worried.
Have you ever tried this type of technique?

I had the same problem, and changing the batteries solved it! A year later, the same thing happened again last June; even the rechargeable ones don’t last, or maybe it’s my charger?

I have an A70 and when I turn it on, the screen becomes blurry then goes black with an E18 message and automatically turns off.
On vacation in the depths of Italy, I was told that this corresponds to an electrical problem.
I don't know if it's worth repairing it economically?

      Good evening

Back in the days of film photography, as long as you were careful, a camera would last you a lifetime; with digital, it's become a consumable like any other, with a very limited lifespan!

      Hello,
please note that the problem with your device comes from the CCD sensor. It's what controls the image. Basically, the main part. This failure is fully covered by Canon and therefore free of charge! Unless it's due to something else. And the E18 means zoom error...

    Hi
I had the same issue with a Canon Powershot G5 (with a removable screen)... it ended up at Canon to have them change the electrical connection (cable) from the screen to the body. Apparently, this would be caused by too much handling of the screen.

I dropped it off at Darty (it had been purchased at Darty), insisting with an email from Canon confirming their willingness to take charge if the defect was indeed observed, and they agreed to send it. The repair (worth about 120 euros) was done for free. It’s now all good.

I have this problem of a black screen on A70

The device was sent to Canon with the hope of being covered because they indeed had defective series.

It came back to me 5 months later with the mention "not repairable"...

Since then, when the screen goes off, I tap more or less long under the sole (knock knock, is anyone there?) and the screen turns back on

In any case, I completely agree with Serge, we are really into "disposables"

I have a Canon A70 that just died: the screen remains black although it correctly displays the photos on the card. This started with E18 errors...
Apparently, this defect has affected many people.
So I took my camera directly to Canon's after-sales service convinced that it was a failure related to the Sony sensor (see http://argus-photo.fr/photo-numerique/65/capteur-defectueux-sony-panne.html
But Canon tells me that the AF system needs to be replaced without further details (cost > 160 EUR!).
Zero points for their communication: the technicians do not answer either the phone or emails.
I doubt their good faith in establishing the diagnosis given the significant number of similar failures. If it's not the Sony sensor, it is certainly another hidden defect specific to certain Canon cameras.
In any case, my next camera will not be a Canon :-(

Your A 70 device hasn't died; I had the same problem last night and found the solution: just press all around the lens to fully retract it, and it will "unstick." Then turn it on again and everything will be fine. Good luck. Monique

I had the same problem (black screen and black photos) with my A70. I pressed the lens as advised - thanks for the tip - and everything went back to normal (for how long??). I'm surprised to see that so many people have had the same problem as I have! But living near Courbevoie, I will still go to Canon. It is obviously no longer under warranty, but if it really is a manufacturing defect in the sensor, it might be worth going to see them... I'll see. In the meantime, I hope this tip will allow me to wait a bit before buying a new one.
