Hello,
I need help, when I turn on my camera to take a photo the screen stays black yet the icons are there, it seems everything is working except that I don't have the image! I can easily see the previously taken photos. And when I take a photo even with the flash it’s black!
Please help me, this device is not even a year old...

It's a sensor problem, you need to check the Sony list to see if the device is there. Several brands use Sony sensors, look it up online or check if it's part of the 50 million consumer units. If the app is on the list, the brand will cover the repair for free.

Hello, I also encountered this problem with the Vivitar 3950, but it is not included in Sony's official list... Were you able to resolve this issue on your end? If so, how?
Thank you. -
Hi,
I have the same problem with a CANON camera. Please let me know of any possible solutions that have been found for this issue. Thanks in advance. -

SAME PROBLEM WITH DIGIMAX AND THEY CLAIM IT'S MY FAULT THAT I BROKE IT... except it hasn't left its box for a month and I took two hundred photos before putting it away. No recourse, yet it's under warranty
Samsung DIGIMAX A55W: not a serious company
do you have any ideas?
Thank you -
Hello
For the Canon A75, it is on the list of devices equipped with a defective SONY sensor; I don't know about the others. For more details on this matter, see:
http://argus-photo.fr/photo-numerique/65/capteur-defectueux-sony-panne.html
But be careful, the list of devices seems a bit short compared to the paper version I have.
The list should be on this site (but I couldn't get it to open):

Sony acknowledged the facts in 2006 and committed to repairs. So if the device is a Sony, there shouldn't be too many problems. If it's another brand, like Canon, Canon is responsible for the repair (they then deal with Sony).
Normally, this repair should be conducted for free for the customer regardless of the age of the device. You have a sort of lifetime warranty. However, there are not enough spare parts in the world to repair all Sony sensor digital cameras in that series. In this case, an exchange is offered.
But some brands or workshops are very reluctant, and they can easily say that the problem comes from elsewhere (good luck proving otherwise!). In this case, they charge for the repair (and it’s very discouraging: generally more expensive than an equivalent new device...). If you refuse the repair, you may be asked to pay for the estimate (a few dozen euros). I'm sorry if I don't sound very encouraging, but I prefer to tell you what I know with the dark spots of the matter.
Anyway, try to find an authorized repairer for your device and ask them the question. If the answer is not satisfactory, try another one (or even a third): you never know. Unless you think taking the risk of paying (a lot) to repair a 3-megapixel camera isn't worth it... It's up to you. -
Hi sweetheart,
I wanted to know if you have solved your problem, which dates back to May. I have exactly the same issue as you (not the same device).
How much did the repair cost approximately?
Thank you in advance for your response.

Good evening, same problem with vivicam5385, 2nd request for help. The device was working perfectly, I put it away, then the screen remains desperately black. I can read the saved photos, but I can no longer take pictures, all the other functions work. I don't understand; I even tried to set the settings to std format - no success...

Hello, lucky me: the Leclerc center offers a 2-year warranty on cameras even though only 1 year was stated on the invoice! It has been in for repair for 2 months! And Leclerc claims that their repair service's phone has been down for a week... Nothing is finished! But I have hope!

Hello, I have exactly the same problem with a CANON Powershot A75
Has anyone found a solution?
Thank you -
Thank you for this very complete response, I will try to find the address of an authorized repairer, I hope it will work!

Hello,
I have a Canon PowerShot A620 for 18 months, the viewfinder is dark and prevents me from taking photos this way. I take photos with the screen instead (which bothers me and is battery-consuming).
CANON is sending me to EOS, which is an authorized repairer, and I received a quote of 116 euros, not including shipping and return costs.
Best regards

Good evening,
Your message is a year old, but I have the same device with the same issue. (Canon PowerShot A 620)
I am disappointed because it was a birthday gift.
Did you have your device repaired for free? Where did you pay? And if so, how much?
Does it have the faulty Sony sensor?
Thank you for all the information
Address if there is a repair shop, etc. ...
Have a good evening,
Alain

I also have the problem of a black screen on my Canon Power Shot S2 IS, I have not been able to find the list for Sony, do you have the website for that?
Thank you -
Hello,
the list can be found on Canon's website: https://self-service.canon-europe.com/en/pages/
for my black screen issue, it was indeed the sensor. The repair was fully covered by the authorized repair center. -
Hello,
I also have this sensor issue and of course the authorized repairer is willing to change the sensor but claims that the optics are defective and must be changed at my expense, costing €300!!!
I contacted Sony but haven't received a reply yet. What should I do in this specific case? -
Thank you for all your information, I also found it was the sensor and even though my warranty had expired for a year, Canon Canada made the repairs for free, hats off to Canon and their good service. I only lost my camera for 3 weeks.

I also have the same black screen problem with my S2 IS. Canon's response: "your device is not among those affected by the sensor problem. The repair is at your expense."
I find it a bit much, for a device of this price, to break down after only 2 years. Moreover, we are not alone in having the same issue, so they could cover the repair costs. In fact, in the USA, some have had their S2 IS repaired at Canon's expense, so why not in France? http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-s2is_question.html?qid=3894
I sent an email to Canon, I'm still waiting for a response. But if I don't hear back from them, I will go see a consumer association.
What’s for sure is that if I have to buy a new camera, it won't be a Canon!-
I also have the black screen problem with my Canon Powershot S2 IS purchased in January 2006.
The LCD screen and the viewfinder do not display any image in shooting mode. I can only view the photos in memory. The camera has never fallen and has always been well maintained.
I have just taken the camera to the Canon service center. My contact did not seem surprised by my problem and was convinced that the repair cost would be covered by Canon due to the numerous problems related to the CCD sensor.
I, however, was very surprised when a few days later I received a repair estimate for €200.00.
I do not intend to stop there.
Thank you for sharing your experience if you have encountered or are experiencing the same problem.

I am in the same situation as you with the Canon 2S IS camera. (Purchased on June 1, 2006 ... broken since November 2007 .... I delayed sending it in for repair).
The screen is black and I can't take photos.
Returned from Canon with the reason "repair not covered by warranty" ....
What is the problem? Pixmania is unable to tell me.
It was while researching the "symptoms" of the malfunction that I discovered your club :)
On Monday I'll call Canon's technical service and we'll see what happens.
