I finally found a sustainable solution to this problem (at least for my case)

Until now, it was impossible for me to get the sound from a game (Borderlands, to be precise) to come out of the headset... it only came through the speakers when the headset was plugged in.

Disabling the "Speakers and Headset" device while keeping "Communication Headset" enabled did not solve my problem since I had no sound anywhere.

The solution lies in "Stereo Mix."

For those who don’t need to have one application on one audio device and another on a different audio device (like Skype in the headset and music through the speakers), simply disabling "Stereo Mix" is enough.

Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar, then "Sound"
==> "Recording" tab
==> Right-click on Stereo Mix and "Disable".

I have the same problem. And I found a "temporary" solution: disable the audio output of the speakers.

To do this: Right-click on the speaker at the bottom right > Playback devices > Right-click on "Speakers and headphones" (or whatever the default device is called) > Disable.

In my case, I only have sound in the headphones (conversations, internet, system, and games), but it's impossible to listen to music or watch a movie with WMP, as the computer thinks there is no audio device.

I have exactly the same problem as you on my HP Pavilion dv7 running Windows 7. I can't find a solution, even though I've been searching for several months as well. The sound separation is not only happening with Skype, but also in some games where I'm unable to get sound through the headphone jack.

In the device manager, I noticed that in the "audio controller" tab, two devices appear: one named "ATI High Definition Audio Device" and the other "IDT High Definition Audio Codec."
I think the conflict comes from there. I've tried quite a few things to try to remove one of the two or even "merge" them, but without success... From what I can understand, certain applications go through the "ATI..." device, which would manage sound through both speakers and headphones. Others go through the "IDT..." device, which would only manage sound through speakers.

Did you finally manage to solve the problem? I do think that sending it for repairs would be pointless since it seems to me to be simply a conflict between devices!

If a kind soul capable of providing a solution passes by here, I would be very grateful for their help!

Well, here’s what I did:
I started by restoring my PC to various dates only to eventually restore it completely, which seemingly didn't change my problem, but who knows
Then I unplugged my laptop and removed the battery (I didn't think to do that before the restorations lol)
As a result of the last manipulation, my speakers and headphones are working properly again :o)
However, there’s a bug in the sound management between the dv7 and Windows 7, as well as when the computer detects an audio communication... I haven’t found anything on this point so far.

I also had this problem, and to avoid having to go to the settings every time to disable the speakers (and then having to reactivate them when you remove the headphones...) here is a definitive solution:

Go to sound control, then right-click on the headphones > properties > advanced statistics > uncheck the box "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"

Thus, software like Skype, Mumble, TeamSpeak or others will no longer change anything with your devices. If this is the case for your speakers, you need to do the same process by right-clicking on the speakers.

Hello, I'm currently facing the same problem, and I've done quite a bit of research online but nothing works!
Unfortunately, I think this conflict between devices is just impossible to manage.. So we have to deal with the Skype sound and the music on the headset!
By the way, I have more or less the same desire as you (to have the Skype sound on the speakers and the music on the headset), but nothing works, I can't find the solution to solve this problem!

I confirm this issue with the HP Pavillon dv7 that was mentioned above, but it doesn't particularly bother me.

However, for the past few days, I only get sound from my laptop's speakers when I am on a Skype call!

Case 1: Headphones unplugged: no sound anywhere!
Case 2: Headphones plugged in: I get all the sounds I want
Case 3: Skype communication open - whether the headphones are plugged in or not: my computer finally seems to remember the existence of its speakers: all sounds come through the speakers except those from Skype

I'm not a pro at Windows 7 (and my friends are stumped too), but all the tests and searches on my computer work in cases 2 (through my headphones) and 3 (through the speakers)
But the speakers remain silent during the tests for case 1...

I like my headphones, but watching videos together on the laptop is quite a hassle :(

For your information in the sound panel:
- the ATI is noted as not connected and aside from completely disabling it, the other actions are grayed out, however this device is functioning properly according to the computer
- Speakers and headphones are checked green and set as default
- independent headphones are indicated as ready

If any ideas come to mind, I would greatly appreciate them :D

Unfortunately, I'm facing the same problem, for me it's games, CSS, and Mumble :S it's quite annoying :S

Yep! I have a solution for the problem! (as long as there are only two audio output programs) remove the laptop battery and log back in! After that, I can hear all my sounds in my headset, as long as it doesn't exceed 2 audio outputs (mumble + css for me)! There’s a way to play around with the operating modes (battery) so that this happens even when the battery is present! There you go, otherwise it's annoying!

Here is the solution, you need to go to Device Manager and uninstall the audio video driver "IDT High Definition Audio Codec". The computer will ask to be restarted, and after the restart, it will automatically install the driver "it needs to be connected". It works for me.

There is 1 "Speaker/Headphones" output and 1 "Independent Headphones" output, I believe. If the "Independent Headphones" output is not being used by a software, all the sound from "Speaker/Headphones" goes to the headphones. Otherwise (or if no headphones are plugged in), it goes to the speakers. Therefore, for each software that offers it, you need to redirect the sound to "Speaker/Headphones."

The problem with HP is that you (and I) have two sound cards recognized ...
One named "Two independent headsets" (by default) and "Speakers and two headsets" or something like that :) You need to set the second sound card as default so that the sounds are no longer separated into headset/speakers during a communication (Skype or other).

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I found a way to solve the problem, even though I still have an issue with some games (Borderlands).
You just need to manage the desired audio output from the communication software (Skype, Mumble, etc.) as long as it offers the option to change the audio output device. The same goes for the game you're playing; set the output to speakers + headphones or just headphones.
You need to manage the sound from the applications you use on the computer and not from the computer itself. HP messed that up...
