Character count in InDesign?

Hello, I would like to know if someone who is familiar with InDesign CS3 can tell me how I can find out the number of characters in a text. Please, it's urgent.

Hello,
…the info palette (Window>Info or F8)… you first click with the text_tool in your text_block.
The info is only provided for the selected block (you have to add them up if there are several)…

Hello,
I just performed the action but the "information" tab only gives me the x and y values and the height and width of the block.. However, I did place myself correctly with the text tool in a text block... weird.. I'm on CS3.
Please let me know if there is another way...

is it really not possible to know all the characters in an InDesign document? I'm being asked for it for a 364-page book that contains many separate articles... so summing up all the boxes...
