Hello

On a Windows 11 PC, why does opening a PDF document close the one that was already open?

    Hello,

    In many software programs it is appropriate to look in the preferences, the open settings. There you find several types of parameters. When the software has tabs (Firefox, Foxit PDF Reader), you can choose when opening a new file whether it opens in the same instance (same window) or in a new application window. With the first option, a single window and multiple tabs, you navigate with the tabs; with the second option, as many Windows windows as there are files open, you navigate between files with the Windows taskbar. When you have 2 windows open under Windows, you can place them side by side on the screen. By dragging a window to the right edge of the screen, then the other window to the left edge. Or likewise, with the Windows+Right Arrow and Windows+Left Arrow keys.

    Hello,

    By default, a PDF reader program such as Acrobat Reader only opens one file at a time in order to save memory.

    This behavior should be configurable.

      Indeed, with a PDF reader there is no problem.

      With Firefox, if in Settings–Tabs we do not have the option 'new tab' checked, it opens in a new window, but it does not actually close the previous one; it only makes it accessible by going to the Firefox icon open in the taskbar, not very practical.

      The subtlety, once we accept that the opening occurs in tabs, is to open the two files in a single view side by side: you can still, with the display reduced by the small square at the top right, drag one tab next to the other, but it’s a bit of a workaround; the newer Firefox versions have, by right-clicking on one of the tabs, the option to add a split view.
