Compressed folders and files in Vista

Question

Hello,

I must have made a mistake!

Recently, when I received a compressed folder or file, it was represented by a small icon that showed a yellow folder with a sort of zipper along with the folder title and "compressed folder". I had no problem opening it.

Now I have a white icon with the folder title and ".zip" and I can't open it at all.

Message: No program is associated with this file to perform this action. Create an association using the Set Associations application in the Control Panel.

So I went to the Control Panel to associate an opening program, and since the document opened with Word, I specified "Microsoft Office Word" next to the zip file.

But I still can’t open it: same message.

I also noticed that when I point to a folder or file and right-click: In the options of "Send to ..." there is no longer the section: "Compressed folders".
I can’t find where these "compressed folders" are in the search on Vista.

Have I destroyed something on my machine or software?

I hope I was clear in explaining my problem. I’m not good with computers, don’t understand any technical terms, and get lost quickly.
If someone could explain all this to me in simple language?

I advise you the simplest way: if you have a zip file, right-click on the folder, then zip and extract the files.

try in the control panel you go to folder options/tab "file types"/ you scroll down to "zip" and it should give you the detail of "what the application opens with" so click modify and set the option "compressed folders".

Thank you for responding and yes, I can't find the compressed folder like on XP... I would have done a system restore but I overlooked that detail, now I'd have to go back 6 months :s
Otherwise for Cathy, by doing a system restore you won't lose any saved documents, it's just the system files that go back (to the date you chose) and the programs installed since that date. There you go

Well, I need to ask for your patience because I am very inexperienced. I have compressed a file. First: using 7zip and also: with Winrar (demo). And then? How should I send it as an attachment in an email please? Is it normal for it to take hours to upload? Should I use an intermediary other than my Yahoo account? Thank you for your response!! Hello, what is the size of your compressed file?  It should not exceed 12 MB on average.

In fact, after a power outage, I had to repair my PC. Even with that, several software programs have not worked since.

I just noticed that not only:

- I can do a right-click "send to compressed folder", but it does not create a "compressed folder" (as it used to) but a zip file (by the way, my zip file has the same icon as something not recognized by the computer, i.e. a blank sheet with a folded corner)

- I cannot drag and drop an external file into the archive in question

- before my computer broke, I also had the 7-zip software. the coexistence with Windows compressed folders was good... and now, I don't think it's the original 7-zip that has a problem but rather 7-zip after the break; the "add files to archive" option is impossible.

in short: it is no longer possible to add files to an archive.

Please help me, help us!
