Unable to send message from Entourage (Mac)

Hello,
I am working on Mac OS 10 and I use Entourage to send and receive my mail (from orange/wanadoo).
However, after a crash of Entourage, I was unable to recover my old messages. I have reconstituted my address book and reconfigured my account. But I cannot send a single message! Receiving is fine, though...
Here is the error:
Error: the mail could not be sent using my account
Explanation: Unable to find the specified server
Error: -3170
How can I resolve this very annoying issue, knowing that all my contacts are on Entourage (and I can’t imagine typing them all back one by one on orange and recreating all my lists!)???
Thank you in advance.

Hello Jonathan!
I’m not really sure what happened for it to crash (I'm quite a novice on Mac!): When I launched the Entourage application, it asked me to log in even though all the settings were filled in correctly. I didn't want to lose my data (emails and address book), so I tried closing it and reopening it, but the second time it wouldn't shut down and I couldn't force it to quit, so I rebooted the computer (fatal error, by the way!).

Hello,
An attempt at rebuilding the database, to do this, launch Entourage while holding down the option (alt) key and follow the procedure.
Make sure that the account is properly configured with all the identifiers: tools/menu/account, open account and check that the account information matches the data provided by mail and by Orange/wanadoo.
Come back here if you encounter any issues and explain what is happening.

Hello,
I don't really understand the database reconstruction? No procedure is displayed?
As for the account: everything seems normal (I think):
Account ID okay
POP server: pop.wanadoo.fr
And for sending emails (which isn't working in my case):
SMTP server: smpt.wanadoo.fr
But isn't there a problem between Orange and Wanadoo? Because my email is @orange.fr but in my account configuration, I have Wanadoo... however, I tried replacing Wanadoo (in POP and SMTP since that's what's written on my line and account opening document) with Orange but it didn't change anything...
What should I do then?
Do you see what I'm talking about?
Thank you.

Re,
After quitting Entourage, you restart it while holding down the option key. As mentioned earlier, if you have other Microsoft software open, you should see a message asking you to close them, which you do, and then a window titled "Database Utility" opens with various options:
1) Verify the database integrity
2) Compact the database
3) Rebuild the database
4) Set database preferences
You check the first three and click continue.
If you don't see that, your Entourage is corrupted.
You can try, with Entourage closed, to go to User/Library/Preferences and, initially, move the file com.microsoft.entourage.plist to the trash, then relaunch Entourage.
Then you come back and tell what happened.

Hello everyone,
I'm sorry for only responding now, but since the problem is on my work computer, I couldn't reply earlier...
So I still can't display the "database utility" (I think I don't know the option key on Mac keyboards... sorry...) to check if there are any issues. However, having recreated my contact folders, I think it has overwritten the old one, which doesn't bother me much now that I've recreated my contacts! Anyway, I think they're definitely lost!
But my real problem is the emails that Entourage refuses to send, giving me an error: -3170
And that's really annoying...
What can I do then?
Thank you. -
Hello all alone ;-)
So I still can't display the "database utility" (I think I don't know the option key on Mac keyboards... sorry...)
The "option" key is the key marked "alt" on the Mac keyboard, so it's located between the command (Apple) key and the CTRL (control) key
But my problem is really the email sending that Entourage refuses to do, announcing an error: -3170
I don't see what this error corresponds to! If you're unable to send your emails, it's possible that in the account setup, under "mail sending" "secure sending option," you've checked the SSL box or the one corresponding to the port, or the three boxes. If you're on a network, there might be a firewall, in which case you need to check with the network administrator.

Well, for the option key, it's that I'm not that useless: it's indeed the one I'm holding down but it doesn't produce anything...
For sending emails, everything is "well" configured in my account: no box is checked... and I don't think there's a firewall either... because the person before me didn't mention it when I talked to her about the problem...
Am I going to have to retype my 250 contacts into Orange and reorganize them? Or do you have a trick to import from Entourage to Orange (because the latter only accepts Outlook!) ???
Otherwise, for the error, it means it can't find the specified server... which I don't understand since it does find it to receive my emails! -
Will I be forced to re-enter my 250 contacts in Orange and reorganize them? Or do you have a trick to import from Entourage to Orange?
When you are in Entourage, the file menu/export will open an export choices window, you select the files you want to export, to your desktop for example. Then, when you are in Outlook, you do the reverse operation "file/import" and you shouldn't have any problems, since both email clients come from the same source.
I don't understand why Orange prohibits the use of Entourage, it's not normal.

I tried to export my contacts (already in file/export... I have no choice, it's "export my contacts..." and I have no other options to choose from...), but since I have one contact and six groups, it only brings over the single contact that is outside of the lists... Is it possible to export and then import contact groups?
I feel like I will never get through this and that the machines are conspiring against me! ;-)
When it's not the sending of emails that doesn't work for an always unknown and incomprehensible reason, it's the export (my last resort!) that doesn't work!-
Hello,
Caro,
You say you are on a work computer, so this computer is located at your professional site, and you want to use your personal messaging... is that right?
If so, the outgoing SMTP server that must be used is the one from your employer's internet provider, even if you are personally subscribed to Wanadoo/Orange.
So, find out about your boss's ISP and use their SMTP server.
See this list:

Best regards,

I suppose all of this is happening on a Mac? However, Outlook shouldn't work on Mac OS X, as far as I know; it worked well on Mac OS 9 but hasn't been developed for OS X.
Or do you want to transfer everything to a PC running Windows? Please explain yourself better. Is your Entourage part of the Office Mac suite?
Have you tried deleting the Entourage preference file: com.Microsoft.Entourage.plist located in the user library/Preferences?

Yes, I've tried everything, I've followed your instructions to the letter:
- I finally managed to "repair the user database" by clicking on alt, but that didn't change my problem,
- I moved com.Microsoft.Entourage.plist to the trash but that didn't change anything either, so I put it back...
Otherwise, I'm on Mac OS 10, and the version of Entourage with the Office pack. Let me explain everything from the beginning:
After a problem with Entourage (asking me to identify myself and thus losing all my contacts and emails), I had to reset my Entourage and re-enter all the settings (and the contacts...). That was done! But my problem is that after reconstituting Entourage (having an Orange mailbox), it was receiving emails from Orange fine but doesn't want to send them from Entourage. And that's my whole problem...
So I wondered if I could transfer my contacts to the Orange messaging system to be able to send emails without having to recreate all my contacts. I'm still on Mac OS 10, but Orange doesn't want to import (which, I agree, is not normal!) text files from Entourage and only accepts Outlook. So I could have exported my contacts from Entourage to Outlook (via another computer that has Outlook) but when I export from Entourage, only one contact "comes out" because in my address book I have one contact outside the groups (the one it exports) and next to it I have 6 groups (each containing about sixty contacts). So I don't understand why it doesn't export the contact groups... am I making myself clear? Is it possible to export and then import lists or groups of contacts (in one file since Entourage only offers to "export my contacts" without allowing me to choose anything except the location!)?
And if that's not possible, ideally I would like to find out where the problem with sending (or rather not sending) emails is coming from?!
Otherwise, I'm going to have to re-enter my contacts one by one and then create lists (since with Orange you can't create a list and then insert new contacts that would only appear in that list!). I'm not really looking to waste time on this... there's got to be something to be done...! -
Yes, I saw your message... I was trying to see if there were any issues...
But everything seems normal!
Actually, I'm on a work computer and I want to receive my professional emails (which come to Orange because my work account is with Orange) via Entourage. I can receive emails just fine, but I'm still unable to send them! -
My dear Francis, Hello and I leave you with all this mess :-) (I'm nice, right?!!!)

Hello Dede,
It seems that Caro has a problem probably related to an internal server. Her email may be going through a proxy or a firewall specific to the company.
In fact, the sending server doesn't care whether the sending email client is Entourage, Mail, or something else. These simply send a file to a sending server. This sending server either accepts or rejects the sending.
However, the error says "unable to find the specified server"
It is imperative to check what is being used as the sending server on this Mac, compared to colleagues or other computers that can send without issue.
Often, companies have their own domain/server..

The question I'm going to ask you may seem very stupid in my opinion, but I'm trying: how do I contact the network administrator? (because there isn't one here!)
Four computers are connected (not "in a network" I think since we can't access the same information...) to a livebox... Will I find the solution? ;-)-
Of course, there are no stupid questions-
It's my turn to ask one: "How are the other computers configured? Can they send emails?
And just in case, please read this discussion carefully, which might point you to a responsible issue

It is quite possible to be networked and not access general or specific information if file sharing is not enabled. The liveBox allows everyone to connect to the Web.
There must be an IT manager in this company?!!

Hello everyone!
Well, unfortunately, we don't have an IT manager here! We're not many, and I wouldn't have bothered you if there had been one! ;-)
But I have to tell you... that... by some miracle, surely from messing around and tinkering... I finally managed to send my emails!
So I want to thank you for all the advice you gave me because it surely helped to fix the problem! And I hope this problem doesn't come back!
See you soon... well... I hope not too soon!-
So all's well that ends well,
still, it must be something very small, a dash instead of a point in the smtp server address, or a checkbox, etc.. it would have been interesting for everyone to know exactly, but the main thing is that it works now..
so good luck for what’s next.

I'm sure I'm doing quite well! Thank you dede74000 for your courage... because one has to put up with all these incomprehensible problems!
But honestly, I see nothing more than a little thing that doesn't make sense! As you say... and I really wish I could tell you what it is... to help others who encounter this kind of problem... so for those who find themselves in the same situation (if technical problems don't resolve your issues at first), do as I did: rewrite all your settings ten times (or more!), restart the application each time... fiddle around! Because when the problem isn't technical, it must be human... so I hope it was due to a wrong manipulation or something like a dot as you say!
Thanks again! -
