Good evening
I have a problem because I can no longer send messages/SMS from my iMac via my iPhone.
In my iPhone/Messages, I checked iMessage but curiously I cannot find the section "SMS forwarding: number of devices"
I tried to send a message to a mobile number and I received this message "your message could not be sent - the recipient's number is not registered with iMessage"
I don't understand anything because it worked fine with my MacBook last week and now neither the iMac nor the MacBook is working.
I checked the forum; it seems simple but apparently something is missing on my iPhone.
Does anyone have a solution to propose?
Thank you in advance
Configuration: . IMac 27 " Intel Core i5 Quad-Core 2.7 GHz running El Capitan 10.11.6
. Asus PC Intel 64 running Ubuntu
. MacBookPro 13' mid 2012 running El Capitan 10.11.6
+ TRANSCEND via Firewire 800 for Carbon Copy Cloner + HP Scanjet 4890 + HP Envy 5547

Hello to you.
I had the same problem and I just found a much simpler solution. One evening I tried a lot of things without success.
I finally went to iPhone Settings > Your name at the top > iCloud > Then disable "messages," and then accept the window that appears.
Then go back to Settings, then Messages, and the "Text Message Forwarding" line should appear. You need to link your Mac, which should be in the list that appears.
I hope I was able to help you.

Hello everyone,
Deafening silence! Is everyone on a long weekend?
I would like to get in touch with someone who has a 4S and for whom "Transfer with other devices - list -" appears correctly in "Messages" and that this function is active with a Mac.
I have tried everything and explored the many posts related to this problem... without result, and that’s why
1. I would like to compare the settings between a working iPhone/Mac transfer
2. that allows sending SMS from a Mac via Messages
What are the preliminary settings:
- is network sharing active? when I choose "bluetooth"; I lose "wifi"; it's one or the other
- do I need to have "FaceTime" activated?
- settings in "General/Restrictions"
- pairing iPhone/Mac via bluetooth
My question about "Phone number not recognized by iMessage" remains active.
My carrier (Orange) allows unlimited SMS and MMS and does not restrict transfers.
I haven’t found any help on Apple regarding this issue of "Transfers...." appearing in the Messages app on my iPhone. Everything is very general without concrete solutions.
Thank you for your assistance.

Hello,
I have an iPhone 4s, and I encountered the same issue as you recently. I was unable to read and send SMS from my Mac.
The phone number had disappeared from the possible addresses in the Messages / Account preferences, and I couldn't add it back.
The only way to restore a correct situation was to log out of my iCloud account in the system preferences on the Mac and on the iPhone, and then go to my Apple account from Safari to remove all my existing devices from my Apple account.
After that, I signed back into iCloud on my Mac and on my iPhone.
SMS transfer then reappeared after a few moments.
Something must have happened on Apple's servers, as it suddenly stopped working for me as well without any particular action taken.
Now it works correctly again.
Best regards.

Hello Francis,
Phew! I'm "happy" (......well, not too much!) to not be the only one affected by this bug
I'll follow your advice.
I'll call you back for the next steps
Thank you and have a great rest of the day

I have my phone number registered in Mac/Messages/Preferences/Account
and in iPhone/Messages/Sending and Receiving.
I followed your instructions closely, and yet nothing works!
I restarted; my iMac and iPhone are properly registered in my Apple account, but still no "transfer."
Does it need to be done via Bluetooth? From my Mac/Bluetooth/iPhone/connect to the network, it throws me out for "Network not available."
When I look on iPhone/Settings/Bluetooth/My devices; I can see MacBook Pro and iMac (not connected); when from my iMac I request the connection of my iPhone, "Connected" briefly appears on the iMac line and then goes back to "not connected."
In Bluetooth, my iPhone is detectable as "Profile's iPhone."
I don't know if there is a cause-and-effect relationship?
So I give up!
If you have another suggestion, I’m open to it!

No, Bluetooth is not involved at all. On my end, Bluetooth is disabled everywhere.
However, the devices need to be on the internet network to be able to communicate with the iCloud server. So WIFI must be enabled on the phone, and either ethernet or wifi on the Mac.
On my end, initially, I had to disconnect and also completely remove the different devices from my Apple account. Then, I had to enter the iCloud accounts again on the devices and the Mac. The line "SMS Transfer" then reappeared on the iPhone and I was able to check the number of recognized devices.
I can't say more and I didn't understand where the issue came from before that.

Always indicate your system configuration completely - exact model of the computer, exact OS version.

Hello Francis
Unable to resolve the issue, I contacted Apple support in Ireland and we tried all sorts of manipulations... without success.
My mobile number was not "set" in iCloud; each time it had to be reset; and that's why, it seems, the SMS Forwarding feature could not be activated.
In desperation, on their advice, I proceeded with a program restoration and a restoration of the last backup.
This is the usual procedure for transferring; I did receive the authorization code for Forwarding
In Settings/Messages, I do have the SMS Forwarding feature back and 2 devices offered (iMac and MacBook); I only checked iMac.
Since iMac/Messages/Accounts I have my mobile phone number and my Apple ID address checked
I did two tests, one with a number on an iOS mobile and another with a number on an Android mobile and both went through fine; the first in a "blue" bubble and the second in a "green" bubble.
The problem: a bug in my software; support was concerned about my grandmother's card -grand-mother, but it seems intact despite its advanced age. How much longer? This 4S is really good!
Everything is thus resolved
Thank you for your help and support

Hi,
I also had to enter the codes that appeared on the Mac to re-authorize the devices (iPad and iPhone) - but without needing to restore the whole program... just disconnect everything, delete the devices from the account on the Apple server, then reconnect... the mysteries of computing
The main thing is that it's working again, even if the Apple technicians themselves don't always know the how and why of it all ;-)
I completely agree - and even the original battery holds up just fine.
