USB-C Connectivity with Lenovo Tab P11 2nd Gen.

Hello,

For several days I have been looking for a solution to transfer images from an SD memory card and/or CP via the USB-C port of a new Lenovo Tab P11 2nd Gen tablet.

In the settings, I have a tab titled "More Connections" which opens to several options. Among these: Connected Devices > USB.

I click, a window opens, titled USB Preferences (see image below). Several options are proposed in this same window.

1- USB connection controlled by (2 choices): Connected device or This device.

2- Use USB connection for (5 choices):

  • File transfer
  • USB tethering
  • MIDI mode
  • Photo transfer (PTP)
  • No data transfer

Nothing works. Only the "Connected device" option is checked.

It is impossible to select anything. I have several memory card readers that I have tried one by one. Most of them are compatible with older smartphones than the tablet and work. For this tablet, I am completely in the dark. It is on Android 12.

However, I note above the screen a USB port logo that appears as soon as I insert a memory card reader.

If anyone has an idea or uses a tablet of the same brand, all advice is welcome.

Thank you!

Hello,

You need to check "File Transfer"... wait a little bit... and your phone will appear in the file explorer of the tablet or PC... now, you can navigate through the directories... Generally, photos are in the DCIM==>Camera folder...

This is not really related to the tablet or its brand; but more to the version of Android being used.

Hello,

Thanks for the response.

Actually, I can't check File Transfer or Photo Transfer (PTP). The 5 options remain stubbornly greyed out and can't be activated. I don't understand... I'm looking for other options to unlock this, but I don't see anything. I can't even switch to the "This device" option.

At the bottom of the image, it says "File transfer options." There too, I don't have access.

Everything seems frozen.

I'm on Android 12.

Hello

Try enabling USB debugging.

The way to do this is HERE.

Yes, I think you have options elsewhere that unlock USB transfers...

Settings==>Advanced options==>Developer options==>Debugging mode when a USB cable is connected...(checked)

It must be something like that.. Maybe the developer options are not enabled..??

This tablet is new to you, there may still be some options to set up..?

Another thing: It's possible that your USB-C cable is only a charging cable... and does not have "Data" conductors... so you need to make sure your cable is suitable for this transfer...

It's quite common and also cheaper..

Good evening,

Thank you for these solutions.

I am indeed in the "Developer options" section, but there is quite an impressive list of options, including the one I'm interested in: "USB Debugging." It specifies that it is a debugging mode for a connected USB cable.

I have activated it, but the result is the same. I should specify that in my case, I need to transfer images from a memory card (SD or CF) via a card reader with a USB-C port (the tablet's port).

I will look into all this tomorrow at my leisure because I think there may be other options that I should enable.

Have a good evening.

So you don't transfer to a PC... but to a micro SD card reader for example...? Nothing indicates that it's compatible with a system like Windows or Android...?

No, it's the opposite I'm transferring from a memory card that is in a reader TO the tablet. I tried with two other readers. No difference. The photos will be in an app like Google Photos, Lightroom mobile, or another. I did this operation this morning, but with a smartphone. No problem. However, with this Lenovo tablet, it's a dead end. The USB-C port is not functional for transfers, only for charging the battery. Why then offer so many options (see the photo above) if the tablet is not designed for this type of operation?

Good evening,

What’s wrong is that the tablet should recognize a USB storage. This is not the case, given the options you are presented with.

There may be a problem with your OTG adapter. There are adapters specified for Lenovo online.
And on Amazon, they sell an OTG adapter that only works for 2nd generation tablets.

There may be something to check on that side.

Hello,

I received this OTG cable intended for a Lenovo P11 2nd Gen tablet.

The result is the same.

I also tried with USB debugging.

Nothing.

Maybe I'm forgetting to perform an operation for debugging, but I can't see it.

Here is the sequence I perform: About tablet > 7 times on Build number > System > Developer options > Use developer options > USB debugging > Back to more connections > I insert the OTG and I get exactly the same situation as in the picture in my first comment.

However, in the "Developer options" section, I just saw that besides "USB debugging" (currently enabled, I have another option titled "Default USB configuration". It is currently inactive.

I am tempted to enable it, but with or without USB debugging?

Thanks again for this solution. I followed the entire procedure mentioned via the link you provided, but the result is the same. The options offered are all frozen (see the image above).

I ordered the OTG cable that seems suitable for my tablet (P11 2nd Gen.) and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I imagine I will then be able to connect my camera directly to the tablet instead of using a memory card reader. Perhaps I will have to redo the USB debugging procedure in addition to the cable.

Hello,

I'm sorry that it's still not working.

A question:
If you replace the card reader with a USB key containing data, does the tablet see the USB key and recognize it as a storage device? Do you have access to the files on the USB key?

If it works with the USB key, try connecting the camera directly to the tablet.

The current situation:

I disabled USB debugging (the developer options are still open to avoid restarting the whole procedure) and inserted a drive with a CF card and waited... a certain amount of time.

A message opens: Settings > USB Key To transfer photos and files. I can either browse or eject.

I repeated the same operation with 2 other drives.

Finally, I have something. That is to say, I was able to open the content of this card on Google Photos.

The files remain in Raw (CR2).

I also conducted the test with an SD card. It is recognized.

I still need to repeat the process several times to be certain with the drives.

Finally, the last test was done directly on the camera. It is recognized and several transfer options are offered: camera connect, Google Photos, Mobile File Transfer, Höte MTP, and Lightroom Mobile.

Conclusion: the OTG cable works WITHOUT USB debugging, but unfortunately, I still do not know why the different options proposed on the screen (see photo from my first comment) remain stubbornly frozen. Another observation, after the first attempt with the reader and the CF card, I noticed that the response was quicker. I didn't have to wait more than a minute like the first time, which led me to think that it wasn't working.

There is certainly a file manager installed on the tablet. Use it. You should be able to see the contents of the SD card.

This will make your task easier.

If you don't have a file manager, download one of these:

Hello

I have exactly the same issue.
I think it's related to the card format.
For me, it's:

- SDHC 16GB = is read with the SD stick plugged into USB-C
- SDXC 128GB = is not even visible on the tablet.

It must be a Lenovo problem.
I will let them know and wait for their response, then I'll come back to this thread.

Hello,

The screen that Columbia05 showed in the initial message is the one we get when the device is not mounted (or has been unmounted).

Normally, the USB storage is immediately recognized and there is a message suggesting to use the smartphone's file manager.

The conclusion is that there is either a hardware issue (USB cable or card reader) or a problem with the Lenovo tablet.

Columbia05 did a good job by changing the cable and reader. The issue is likely related to the tablet.
