Hello,
I can no longer access my messaging app; it crashes before opening with the message "has quit, restart or send a message to Apple"... I no longer have access to iCloud either; is that related? What should I do? Thank you for your help.
Configuration: Macintosh / Safari 11.1.2

Hello,
Maybe the Mail preferences file is damaged, just move it to the trash and restart Mail, but you may have to recreate your email accounts.
To delete this file, you need to go to your user library, which you can access from the "Go" menu in Finder by holding down the Option (alt) key. From this library, go to the "Preferences" folder and with Mail closed, drag the file "com.apple.mail.plist" (or similar, depending on your OS but ending with .plist) to the trash, without emptying it right away.
You restart Mail, if it works, the preferences file will be recreated and you can empty your trash, otherwise, you replace the newly created file with the deleted file.
We will try something else.
PS: do not go anywhere else than this library, it would be risky.
When it’s urgent, it’s already too late (Talleyrand)
When all else fails, read the manual ;)-
Ouf! Thank you very much for your reply, but the only similar file references I've found are, according to your instructions of course, in the folder com.apple.Launchservices: com.apple.mail-shared.plist, com.apple.MailMigratorService.plist.
I'm afraid of making a mistake.
Yesterday, before I opened your email, I used Disk Utility's First Aid; it didn't yield anything - "everything is fine." Doctor Cleaner Pro, purchased from the Apple Store, cleans regularly but gives me no indication of any issues with Mail...
My computer has been very slow to start since the beginning of the month, when the problems with Mail began.
I back up on Time Machine and on other drives, but I feel like I should prepare for a mess if I don't get help.
Thank you again for your assistance. -
Hello,
I don’t know why you went to the folder "com.apple.Launchservices" since I haven't mentioned it, so you shouldn't touch it.
As I told you yesterday, to access your user library, from the Finder (access by clicking on the empty screen) menu "Go"
By holding down the option (alt) key, scroll down in the dropdown menu with your mouse pointer or trackpad (you didn’t give your Mac model) until "Library" appears, which only shows up this way unless configured otherwise, and click to open it. You will have this access path for the Mail preference file, as it should be under your OS X 10.11 (I’m on the same) drag and drop it into the trash (or right-click the name/move to trash)
Then, relaunch Mail (double-click on the icon (or right-click the name/open)

I told you I'm on El Capitan, just like you, and of course, I'm using the same version of Mail; it can't be otherwise.
But you haven't told me if you did what I asked you to do!
If your problem persists, download and install the combo update for El Capitan; you won't risk anything, you won't lose anything, but it might fix the bugs, as we say informally ;-)

Hello,
I just followed the procedure, I relaunched Mail and observed the following message: "Mail quit unexpectedly. Click Report to see more details and send a report to Apple."
I mentioned the com.apple.Launchservices folder because it opened directly when I selected "Preferences," that's why I needed help.
So I followed your advice, dragged the file placed in the trash back to preferences, it reintegrated its original place: in com.apple.Launchservices
I want to point out that when I opened the Preferences folder, all the folders contained in it were displayed without my intervention.
What should I do? Thank you.

Good evening,
I tried downloading the update you sent: nothing, total refusal on all disks. I contacted Apple and I was told that my machine had become "a little old" and that I would have some difficulties finding someone (a reseller, repairman, technician, etc.) who could restore my computer to its proper functioning version. I therefore had to resolve to change machines. Previously, I had made backups on Time Machine and other external hard drives. The transfer of my "good" data was able to be done very quickly on Mojave 10.4.6, by a different team than the one that was assisting me before with my old machine. I was able to recover what I thought was lost... and I'm off to explore with a slightly more nervous horse than the previous one, which nonetheless gave me a lot of satisfaction over the past few years. Thank you again.
