Unable to edit with the selection tool

Hello,
Usually, I draw a square using the "rectangle tool" and then I can resize or distort it using the "selection tool."
However, for some time now, I can't modify a frame, an image, or text.
What's strange is that there's a small white square at the end of the selection tool, but I can't figure out what it corresponds to.
I looked in Preferences, but without success.
So I'm forced to go to Effect/distort and transform/transformation to modify any element, which is tedious.
I hope I’ve been clear!
