Reduce a photo to only 6 colors

Hello,
I want to reduce an image to only 6 colors, from lightest to darkest.
Can someone help me?

Configuration: Mac OS X (10.10.5) / Safari 9.1.3

hello

two solutions:

color indexing, in the image menu → mode


or isohaline
for that, you first need to convert the image to grayscale
and assign 6 levels to the image


in both cases you can then select color by color to modify the colors

Is it possible to replace these 6 colors with numbers ranging from 1 (for the lightest color) to 6 (for the darkest color)?

replace them with numbers? It is possible to rename them with a right-click if that's what you mean....

there must be applications or plugins to do it
or maybe it can be done through coding but I don't know anything about it :)
