"Unable to perform the operation because you"

Solved/Closed

Hello,
I just retrieved my Mac after replacing the hard drive (......) and I want to update Firefox. I know how to do it, I am the administrator of the computer... yet, it won't let me finalize the update on the grounds that: "unable to perform the operation because you do not have the required permissions."

- how is this possible since I am the administrator of the computer?
- where do I need to check or uncheck something to finalize the update? in my session? in another session (there are two administrators)?

Thanks in advance for your insights

Configuration: Mac OS X / Safari 533.20.27

Hello,

You must have an old version of Firefox installed.
Sometimes, older versions can cause this kind of anomaly (incorrect permissions).
Remove the old version of Firefox, and download the latest version, which you will place in the Applications folder after getting rid of the old version.

Have a nice day

P.S.: In any case, one thing you should do: launch Disk Utility and run a permissions repair.

Always indicate your exact configuration: Mac model and Mac OS version!

Hello,
thank you for this very quick response! However, if I delete the old version of Firefox, am I going to lose all my settings, my bookmarks, etc.?

OK, that's cool, that answers this question about new versions of Firefox, thanks!

But I would like to have the right to do the updates since I am the administrator. And right now, I can't see how....

Normally it works. Except sometimes, there can be a problem in a case like this, but it's rare. In principle, repairing the permissions resolves the issue.
Usually, you will simply be asked to confirm replacing the old version.
If certain circumstances cause the system to consider you as not the owner of a file or folder, this happens when the file or folder has been copied from another medium; you just need to reassign the rights to the relevant file or folder.
For example, I sometimes copy one of my own audio CDs to make a copy for the car, I drag and drop the icon of my CD onto the desktop, and then when I want to rename it explicitly, the system says I don’t have the permissions. It considers that copying a locked medium, a CD is locked by definition, retains the write restrictions.
At that moment, I reassign myself the rights as the owner who can read and write on the file.

No. The favorites, settings, etc. are located in a separate folder. Not in the application itself.
