Element too large Solved

Question

Hello everyone, I have a very recent MacBook Air (2013) and a friend gave me an .ISO file. I would like to put it on my external hard drive to transfer it to a second computer. The problem is that when I move the file (4.5 GB), a message appears saying "cannot copy this item because it is too large for the volume format." On this forum I saw ( https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-24147698-disque-dur-externe-element-trop-volumineux ) that I needed to split the file and paste it later, but how do I do that? Knowing that I don’t want to lose the content of my external hard drive.

Reformatting a hard drive will automatically erase all its contents.
Unfortunately, there is no alternative to this fact.

The solution is to temporarily store its contents elsewhere, and then recover them.

Good evening,

The solution is much simpler. Your external drive just needs to be in a format other than FAT32, which is an old format from the early versions of Windows and DOS. The FAT32 format, also known as MS DOS, does not accept files larger than 4 GB. Mac OS formats, NTFS, or ExFAT do not have this limitation.

If this hard drive is only going to be used for Mac, the best option is to format it as Mac OS Extended; if it needs to be compatible with Windows, you can choose between ExFAT or NTFS.

NTFS is the current format for Windows, but a recent Mac must use Paragon NTFS for Mac to be able to write to it and manage it.

Good evening Francis and thank you, so basically I need to convert my external hard drive to NTFS using the disk utility? What about the content currently on the disk, will it be deleted or will it remain intact, please?

Unfortunately..
In looking for another solution, I found the Pif-Splitter software which allows you to split and later rejoin files, all while supporting many formats.
I therefore split my .Iso file into 6 pieces of 900MB that I transferred using a USB flash drive.
