CANON POWERSHOT S2 IS battery issue

Hello,

Could you please advise me? I have a CANON POWERSHOT S2 IS digital camera and I'm experiencing a small problem.
When I turn it on, it tells me to change the batteries.
However, whether I use rechargeable batteries that are fully charged or new batteries, this issue is still displayed on the screen.
Could you help me solve this problem???

    Sorry for the late reply, this is an email address I check very rarely.
    So:
    You switch to "Tv" mode and using the left arrow on the pad, you go up to 15" (it's limited to 15 seconds and not 30 as I thought)
    You trigger the photo, and before the 15-second photo-taking period ends, you open the battery cover. = hard reset.
    My camera has been working normally since then with the same batteries (which I recharge from time to time, of course).

    I have the same problem as you with the Canon Powershot S2 IS

    When I put in fully charged batteries and turn it on, it tells me to change the batteries. I hope it's not dead, because it's still a very good camera.

    To those who have posted on this topic, do you have a solution or advice from Canon, or is the device just broken?

      Hello Patrice,

      Your camera may not be dead, I managed to bring mine back to life, but for how long...

      I completely reset it in several steps. They may not all be necessary, but one seems to have worked since today my batteries have a normal lifespan.

      First, I removed all the batteries including the CR1220 and let the camera rest for a little while to make sure it started from scratch.

      In the menu, there is a function to restore factory settings. I did that, but without real success.

      The breakthrough was the "hard" reset (30 seconds in the microwave! JUST KIDDING!). You need to set it to shutter priority mode "Tv", with freshly charged batteries of course, you set the time to 30 seconds and then take a photo. Thus, you have 30 seconds to open the battery compartment (for example, after 15 seconds). The camera will of course stop during the photo capture with the diaphragm open and perform a hard reset. If the first time doesn't work, you can try it 2 or 3 times.
      For me, since then my camera has been functioning normally for the moment (for 3 months).

      I have the same problem with a Powershot SX1 IS.
      But when I switch it to TV mode, I don't understand what to do to set the time to 30 seconds? That is, the timer?
      And for a hard reset, is there a specific manipulation to do or does it happen automatically?

    I had the same problem with 2 different model Canons after about 3 years of faithful service. The issue seems to be the small lid that closes the battery compartment, which, with wear and tear, no longer closes properly and therefore, the contact with the batteries is not good.

    I don't know how to fix this problem though.

      In a forum in English, it is suggested to place a toothpick under the tabs that ensure the contacts in order to improve the connections. Personally, I gently pulled those tabs to free the parts that go underneath. For now, the problem has disappeared, but closing the lid is delicate and difficult.

    Hello,
    For some time now, the batteries in my S2 IS have been lasting shorter and shorter.
    The device is 3 years old. I thought it was normal and bought 2 new sets of rechargeable batteries.
    It worked well after the change, but for the past week, I can only take 2 photos with the charged batteries before the device shuts off with the message "change the batteries".
    Since this evening, it won't even turn on anymore.

    What should I do? If anyone has an answer, please let us know.

    I just noticed that in the battery compartment, there is a space for a CR1220 button cell battery.
    Is it this battery that needs to be replaced?

      I also changed this small CR1220 button battery but it didn't help. It seems that the lifespan of new technology devices is limited over time.
      After less than 5 years, all we have left is the trash, as repair is often a tedious, long, and costly process.

        Same problem, with this device that has served me well for two and a half years and then this charging issue occurred. It holds about twenty photos before asking me to change the batteries.

        I tried new batteries, but that didn't solve the problem.

        I was wondering about this micro battery CR1220 that could be the cause of the anomaly, and I thank you for testing it for us. I would have liked that to be the reason.

        Of course, I'm open to any other solutions, as this device is really good (when it works).

    I'm reopening the topic because I'm having the same problem, have you resolved yours?
    I've tried the "Hard Reset," what do you mean by setting the time to 30 seconds? I'm having a bit of trouble with that...
    I'm open to any good ideas.

    Resolved on the S1 IS:

    I noticed during the few minutes of operation that CHCK indicated ~3600mV. However, with four AA batteries that actually provide 1.2V, it ends up working as if there was one battery less!!

    -->> Contact problem

    I unscrewed the contacts, removed their plastic keys (protection layer), and placed four pieces of paper the size of a stamp folded several times under the contacts.

    I have the same device. This message appears when the batteries are low...
    If it appears with new batteries, I'm afraid the problem might be more serious than just a simple battery issue....

    I don't know how, but one beautiful day, my camera started working again. For how long, I don't know yet.
    Thank you for your response rico49, the next time it bugs again, I will do what you told me.

    I admit I would be disappointed if this camera stopped working again, it is relatively complete, I think.

    Hello,

    I just had a problem with an S5IS... apparently no power...
    removed the 4 R6 and the cr1220... the time for a meal... 1 small hour and hop, it's back on... just in time to not prepare the package for the customer service... phew...

    Now I just need to set the time and probably various parameters....

    My device had been stuck for several months with the same message "change the batteries" as soon as I turned it on to take pictures.
    <However, I had noticed that it wasn't an issue with the voltage or contact of the batteries, as it turned on in playback mode.
    While reading your post, I tried turning it on in another mode - TV mode, in this case - and it immediately unlocked (without even removing the batteries or doing a reset).
    Strange!
    I hope you found a solution too.
