I faced a problem on my mother's PC.
It turned out to be a DNS resolution issue.
facebook.com was no longer being resolved as an address.

I fixed the problem, but it happened again.
I opened a command window and executed the command:
IPCONFIG / FLUSHDNS

Then the site was accessible again.
But upon rebooting the machine the next day, it happened again.

Maybe you should start by creating an anonymous (fake) Facebook account to help you overcome your shyness. Also, avoid putting a photo of yourself: choose a picture that you like enough to identify with without being recognized directly. The same goes for the name. All of this will help you gain confidence and free yourself from the (in my opinion false) belief that the people you meet/know are against you or turning away from you. When Blossom writes "Provoke hatred rather than pity," it reminds me of many trolls I know: they have rejected the victim role. Then dive in, look for funny/trash groups, etc. Definitely not care-bear and/or pseudo-psychology groups. In my opinion, also avoid dating groups. Instead, look for groups that match your interests and just go for it. Regarding your friends list, you can hide it so that it's only visible to you :) handy for not worrying about how many friends you have or not.
