Hello,
I have my friend's Mac which refuses to shut down on the grounds that "Mail," the messaging software, has not been quit.
Except that Mail doesn't want to quit (dropdown menu and keyboard shortcut). I'm puzzled; well, I suggested she check her emails via webmail, but still...
Over to you, and thanks for your time.

Hi,
I had the same issue. Simply, if it’s the first time it happens, click on the "Apple" and then "Force Quit" and choose "Mail".
And you can turn off your Mac ^^
See you!

Thank you very much, it works very well. I had the same problem, unable to turn it off because of the emails.
Try uninstalling/reinstalling Mail to fix this issue...

Same here, same problem. IMPOSSIBLE to turn off my MAC on the grounds that the MAIL application is not closed.
(No matter how much I click on QUIT MAIL, nothing works.... MAIL stays there, like a pretty slacker.)
So for now I leave my mac "On" because it refuses to shut down.

Hello,
When you say that you can't close Mail, is it systematic? Or is it the first time?
If it's systematic, try uninstalling/reinstalling Mail as mentioned in my previous message (via Pacifist).
In the latter case, go to the Apple menu -> Force Quit -> select Mail -> Force Quit.
If this method doesn't work, open a Terminal window (Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and switch this window to full screen. Type ps -lx then find the line corresponding to Mail /Applications/Mail.app/.../..., note its pid (2nd column) then type kill -9 num_du_pid (num_du_pid being of course its pid number).
This last method should be avoided, as stopping the application is done in a "brute" manner, so if the problem persists, we should consider another solution.
The Mac should then shut down ...
Best regards.

Hello,
Please perform the following, point by point, retesting before proceeding to the next steps:
Updates:
1°) Have you performed the updates? Go to the top left of the screen in the Apple menu and select "software updates."
2°) Choose and download Onyx for your system http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Install Onyx.
Open Onyx
Let it check the SMART status of the hard drive and the volume structure, then give it the password when prompted
Then click the "Automation" button
Check all boxes except "Show folder contents"
Click "Execute"
Restart the Mac.
(You can use Onyx, for example, once a week for maintenance and problem prevention).
3°) Reset NVRAM/PRAM
A: Turn off your Mac.
B: Locate the following keys on your keyboard: Command (?), Option, P, and R. You will need to press them simultaneously in step 4.
C: Turn on the computer.
D: Press the Command + Option + P + R keys, then hold them down before the gray screen appears.
E: Keep the keys pressed until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
F: Release the keys.
3°) Zap NVRAM and PRAM
This maneuver allows you to reset, clear, and initialize the PRAM and NVRAM buffer of the Mac. To do this, restart your computer, and as soon as you hear the famous startup sound, immediately press and hold the "alt" + "Command" + "P" + "R" keys (you must press these keys before the gray screen appears). Hold these keys until you hear the startup sound again! Then release these keys!
NB: This operation may change certain system settings, such as volume or mouse speed. Therefore, you will need to reconfigure this by going to "System Preferences."
5°) START WITHOUT EXTENSIONS
To perform a startup without extensions, hold down the Shift key after your Mac has started. Release it when a gray Apple logo appears on the screen.
When your session is open, empty the trash, and restart normally.
(more info: https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT201262 )
6°) SMC RESET
https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT201295
7°) DELETE PREFERENCES:
For systems from OS 10.7 onwards, go to the top of the screen in "Go" while holding down the "alt" key, then Library => Preferences and place the "com.apple.mail.plist" file in the trash.
(For systems prior to 10.7, go directly to the small house with your name => Library => Preferences).
Restart.
This file will regenerate upon restart without any potential corruption
If the problem is resolved, you may need to reconfigure your system preferences and empty the trash.
Otherwise, while waiting for further assistance, restore the file from the trash to its original location by clicking "OK" when the Mac asks if you want to replace it.
8°) PERFORM A COMBINED UPDATE. Choose the one for your current system. To know this, go to the Apple menu at the top left of the screen and click on: "About this Mac." This rewrites the system, and Mail is an integral part of the Mac system.
9°) INSTALLATION PROGRAM UPDATE:
for 10.6.8
