Attachments with Mail on MacOS X

You just need to go to mail>preferences>composing>message format

Set: "Plain text" instead of "RTF format"

To ensure that Mail inserts attachments (e.g., images) directly into the message, you need to use the Terminal.

To make this behavior the default, you will need to use the Terminal to configure the preferences. The Terminal is located in Applications > Utilities. Open Terminal and type:

defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes

---->

If you decide this is not what you are looking for, to restore inline attachment viewing:

defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool false

Restart Mail and you're back to normal.

I suggest you ask your correspondent to "zip" the images.
It's not to save space, but to prevent your email client from interpreting the images in its own way, which is not always correct.

EDIT, I seem to have found it; once the file is incorporated into the message, whether it's an image or music, you just need to right-click and select "show as icon"! And there you go, normally it works.

a photo attachment or not should either slip into the designated area or be handled via attach + search for the file etc. -
the recipient will logically find either to save the file or then we should be able to right-click on this image to open save as or similar

Response to jrévillon (remove attachments with Mail):
Mail is not my cup of tea, but to remove the attachments, you need to go to the "message" tab in the menu bar and choose "remove attachments".
(You can also copy the message text and save it in a text file.)

I’m bumping this post because I have a similar problem with XLS and DOC attachments.
When I send them, my correspondents are unable to open them and from what I’ve tested, the file extension is replaced by .DAT. I use Gmail for my email and am on Office 2008 with OSX 10.8.5...
