Attachments with Mail on MacOS X

Hello,
I just got a Mac and I'm using the Mail software for messaging. When I want to send an email with an attachment, it gets pasted into the message and doesn't appear as an attached file, so the recipients of the email can't use the attachment (especially the photos: it's impossible to save them)
Could you please let me know where to change the settings so that attachments appear as attached files in the email and not "pasted" into the email?

Thank you in advance for your help
Configuration: Mac OS X Safari 525.27.1

After attaching the photo to the message, if it opens in the window, then right-click (or ctrl+click) on the photo. Among the options that appear, choose "Show as icon."
