Hello,
I bought a TomTom Go 730 GPS two months ago and everything was working perfectly until now. When I connected the GPS to the computer, it would ask me if I wanted to connect to the computer, and I would select "yes," allowing me to do everything I wanted with the TomTom Home software. However, overnight, when I turn on the GPS to connect it to the computer, a little bubble appears at the bottom right of my PC screen: "USB device not recognized, one of the USB devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it." When I switch ports or even computers, the same thing happens; the driver installs correctly, it indicates that the device is ready to use, but 10 seconds later the same message appears...
Can someone please help me? Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.4

I have a GO730 and I had the same problem as you... But the reboot fixed the issue... Strange nonetheless!!!
Hello,
I am experiencing exactly the same issue and have been since almost the same date.
I have not yet been able to resolve this problem.
I am in the same position as you, waiting for a response.
As for the support phone number, I haven't been able to reach anyone.
I hope we can resolve this issue quickly.
Best regards.

Since the same period, I am in the same situation..
I think it's the last update that caused this.
If you ever have a solution, I'm interested!

Indeed, I also successfully performed a reset yesterday (and on top of that, I didn't lose anything, neither configuration nor favorites...).
Hello everyone, same problem...since the update...on the same date...
except that it happens every time....the reset is a last resort....there should be another solution..
it's a tomtom issue that needs to be resolved other than through a reset.....
See you, marc

Hi mrmarc, I completely agree with you. For your information, I made my last updates around December 3rd, everything was working fine. I returned from a two-week vacation where I used the TomTom without any issues in South Africa. This morning, I tried to connect, and on both of my PCs, the USB port is no longer recognized.
I'm hesitant to do a reset because my TomTom is working well, and I'm afraid I won't be able to restore it to its current state and won't be able to connect to the PC to recover my last backup.
I have emailed TomTom support with my question, and as soon as they respond and provide a satisfactory solution, I will pass the info along to you...

Hello
I have some doubts now about the interest of sending my 940 live to TomTom's customer service because I can see that other people have this issue with devices that were working fine before... Isn't this just a simple issue with TomTom Home?
I will wait a little bit before sending it back to them via UPS (they have given me all the agreements for the return, at their expense to the Netherlands)
Best regards

Good evening lapinauchocolat, I just solved my problem. After a restore on one of my computers to a date when everything was working perfectly (November 25), I had to reinstall TomTom Home 2.5, which was no longer working. I connected my TomTom, same problem as before. In desperation, like some others have done, I resigned myself to doing a reset with a paperclip; just one press, GPS turned off, and after a startup that effectively rebooted it, then it turned off, I placed it on the dock, turned it back on, and miraculously, it worked.
I didn’t lose any of my preferences or all my backups; it’s not intellectually satisfying, but it’s like Windows, a good reset and it’s back to normal.
Go920T
Best regards

Hello
I’ve had a live 940 for 2 days
On my PC running Vista, I have the same problem as you with TomTom Home 2.5
USB device not recognized.
I then tried to install it on another PC running XP and with version 2.3.1.92 (CD provided with the TomTom live 940)
same issue: device not recognized
I tried your reset manipulations but without success
I emailed TomTom and I'm waiting for their reply.
If you have any leads, I'm interested.
There seems to be a real issue since I have the same problem on 2 PCs with different configurations.
Best regards

Hello
Tomtom suggested several manipulations but without success.
They are telling me to return the machine.
There must be an identified problem because they didn't hesitate long before telling me to return the machine...
I'm still surprised, but oh well...

Hello
My TomTom Live 940 has indeed been sent back to customer service
here I am with a new device and still the same issue
device not recognized on 3 different PCs
Called customer service... and they tell me: maybe the dock has a problem.
Try with another dock and there, miracle it works!
The TomTom was fine... it was just the dock that had a defect.
I still lost a month... and customer service clearly told me to only return the device without accessories.
tough luck... it was the accessory that didn’t work.... it will also have to go to the Netherlands!!
Now, however, it's impossible to connect to the live server on the new device...
I did a soft reset, factory reset... nothing...
In the network settings, it still says that the TomTom is Connected...
Mystery.

Hello,
My GO730 just displayed five lines while it was no longer recognized by my computer, although I had never had any problems until today. TomTom's online help is completely unbearable; fortunately, a search on Google directed me to this forum where I immediately found the solution. It indeed only took a reset of the device to set everything right.
Thanks to those who posted the solution on the forum.

changing the USB cable doesn't help either...
tried on 3 PCs...

Tomtom go 720
Same problem as you; USB device not recognized. Tried the RESET but nothing works... and I've even tried on 3 other PCs and a Macbook... still impossible to recognize my tomtom via USB...
This happened since I wanted to reuse my tomtom after 2 months of inactivity and tried to update GpsQuickFix... before it worked perfectly for over a year so I don’t understand...

Thank you, but it's no better than what I've already done,
- battery charged...
- tried several resets and maneuvers to connect the Tomtom hot to the USB or not...
- tried on several PCs and a MacBook...
- tried with a standard USB cable, small USB connector for the Tomtom and large USB connector for the PC...
in short, I think there's a problem with my Tomtom Go 720... or the Tomtom USB dock is no longer working.
I have to try at a friend's place who also has the same USB dock and a Go 720... if it doesn't work at his place either, it's definitely my device's fault,,, and that's a bummer... what else can I do, it's not even under warranty anymore!
Idea: can we change the internal battery of the Tomtom Go 720...? a new battery connected internally to the USB port could change the behavior of the Tomtom. at the same time as getting a new battery since mine only lasts 50 minutes today...

Thank you for these links, especially for the battery; they will be really useful to me.
Just for your information, the green light on my Tomtom turns on when I plug it in via USB, it recognizes it even because it asks me the usual question of whether I want to connect my device to the computer...
... when it's the first time on a new PC, it does say "New hardware detected"... then "Your hardware is ready to use"... but systematically it ends with "Unknown USB device"... and my device is completely invisible to the computer.

If it worked before, I think you should talk to TomTom via the email or other contact on the site I gave you.
If you tried it on several PCs, it’s not the USB port but the TomTom.
Have you checked by going to Start, right-clicking on Computer, Properties, Hardware and Device Manager, and then clicking on USB port?
You connect your TomTom to USB and start it. Normally, you should see a window pop up and you click on read files.
However, you need to properly disconnect your TomTom, meaning without turning it off by directly pressing the power button but via USB.
Have a good day.

Sorry, you also need to add and check that there are no yellow exclamation marks or red question marks, and check it again after starting the GPS.

Yes, thank you, I had already checked in the Device Manager; there is no yellow exclamation point or red question mark once the TomTom is connected to the PC via USB. I even uninstalled all the USB controllers (except the one for my mouse) in that manager and restarted the PC to force Windows XP to reinstall them, then reconnected my TomTom, but nothing worked... yet everything seems to go well at first: "New hardware detected"... then "Your hardware is ready to use"... then after a few seconds: "Unknown USB device".
I don't think this is related, but just in case... about three months ago, I noticed that my TomTom cigarette lighter charger was no longer working (no more little green light and of course no more battery charging in the car)... I also tested it with my children's PSP cigarette lighter charger (same output voltage) and the same USB plug as the TomTom; since that worked well, I continued to use my TomTom for two weeks. Then I put it away in the cupboard as I didn't need it for two months...
When I took it out again, I wanted to connect it to the PC but couldn't turn it on (it must have been completely discharged), so I left it to charge on the PC dock and then used it again with the PSP charger in the car as before, and it started up and worked like it did before....
except for the fact that I can no longer connect it to the PC via the USB dock with the symptoms mentioned above...
That's also why I was thinking of trying with a new battery and buying a TomTom brand cigarette lighter charger.

Hello everyone, thanks for the info, I had been stuck on an unknown device since this morning, I just reset my GPS and miracle, it works. First of all, a big thank you to our benefactor...lol And
If I may, I think it's important to do thorough research by starting with asking the right question before sending it to your search engine (preferably Google) to help us find the site that is most “close” to our issue.</gras> Thanks again.

Thank you for your response.
I also succeeded by simply turning on the device on its stand that was connected to the computer.
Best regards.
Thank you so much for your help. We couldn't solve the issue of the unrecognized device (despite reinstalling the software and the driver) and finally, everything was sorted out by pressing the reset button. Moreover, this problem led me to discover the site "how it works". Thanks again and happy new year.
It's foolish not to have thought of it sooner. In fact, I had the idea to do it just before reading the response here.
I thank the author and the forum for the help provided.
I advise the developers at TomTom to come here more often to learn their trade. Because with the price of their devices and maps, it would be the least they could do to send a message to customers to say that they made a mistake.
Thank you all.
I tried a bunch of things and the right solution was the RESET! It works.
