Lacie hard drive help! Solved

Hello,

I have a big problem with my LaCie Ethernet d2 mini v2 hard drive; it seems to be stuck, it no longer appears on the network and makes a "tac-tac" sound.
Can someone tell me how to unlock it please?

Note: Remember to do it as soon as you are out of warranty because there is no way to recover the lacie otherwise!!

Hello,

nothing ventured, nothing gained,

I retrieved the data from a disk that had this type of problem after putting it in the freezer for more than an hour, then I reconnected it and it worked for a quarter of an hour, then back to the freezer and so on until the complete data recovery.

Hello,

I have the same problem as you, but the issue only occurred after the XP SPK3 update.

The problem seems related to the loss of the connection to the drive.
IPconfigurator can no longer find the unit and it's no longer possible to access the ADM page.

But more seriously (at least for me), it is impossible to reset because the drive won't turn off with the on/off button.

I suppose it's because it was not first turned off via the ADM page.
It's in secure mode.

Since it is stuck, it is also not possible to switch it to USB as it is not recognized.

If anyone has an idea, it would be welcome.

Hello,

Having not found a "local" solution, I sent the disk unit back to LaCie.

As they requested to return it without any accessories, it went back "bare."

Three weeks later, it came back with the diagnosis: everything is fine, nothing was found.

When the unit was plugged back in at my place, the same problem occurred: the unit was stuck, unusable, and impossible to turn off.

I then sent the unit back with the power adapter.

I am waiting for its return.

But I can already conclude that the hard drive is not the issue.

I'll keep you updated as soon as the unit is returned.

Great, thanks guys, I had the same issue. I have 2 identical disks at the office, which allowed me to use the other transformer and it works!!! The company must be aware of this issue!!

Good evening,

I’m back after a few days of absence and searching for multiple solutions.

In my case (even though the symptoms are identical), changing the power supply didn’t help at all.
With permission (please note, guaranteed!), the drive connected directly to a PC gives the same result (not recognized by BIOS and tack/tack).

So, the drive is dead (just barely over 1 year old, without continuous use!!)

I noticed some strange fluctuations in the transfer rates in recent days. Also, the noise intrigued me. This weekend, I had the "tac-tac" but it lasts a few minutes; afterward, the HDD part makes a continuous noise. However, the power supply (the transformer) makes a very high-pitched whistling sound. I hope I detected the problem in time to avoid any damage. What do you think? Thanks for your responses.

I sent my power supply back to Lacie, of course at my own expense. They sent me a new one a few days later. No more noise, no more instability, everything works normally. It's a known issue with them, which is why I think they didn't make a fuss.

I have something similar with my d2 Quadra since this morning.
But it’s not really the same classic problem of the “tac-tac” and the flashing blue light at the front.

To be honest, the hard drive doesn't turn on at all, and it’s the green power light that is flashing.
Having no other device that works with this type of 4-pin power socket at the back of the hard drive, nor a second power supply unit, the tests to determine if the problem comes from the power supply are limited.
However, in an unencouraging turn of events, when I plug in just the entire power supply kit (cable to the wall socket + unit + cable to the hard drive), the unit light is steady, normal.
But as soon as I plug the 4-pin plug into the hard drive, the power indicator weakens and flashes hesitantly, and of course the hard drive is not powered at all, suggesting there might be some kind of short circuit.

If someone has had this kind of problem, I’m curious to know their final verdict.

Good evening,

I realized that my disk was constantly working... it was re-indexing all the time...
And in the admin menu, I had no information about my disk.
I removed the disk and with Gparted live I reformatted the largest partition as XFS.
I flashed the firmware but no better results... I can access my disk through my network, enter the ADMIN menu, but I have no information in the "disk" tab.
I called LACIE support, but they don’t want to "give anything up", yet they must have what is necessary to get the system back on track.
So I am reaching out to all of you, if anyone is in the Lyon area I am looking for an ISO image to repair the embedded OS on the disk.

Hello everyone

I just came across your post.

I have the same issue with my EDmini V2.

- No access to the disk on the network,
- The blue button on the front stays lit constantly, cannot turn off the HDD with the button
- When unplugged, left to cool for several hours and then replugged, same thing
- Power supply very hot
- Slight clicking sound from the disk

So, I disassembled the HDD and reassembled it in a USB2 enclosure (SATA interface).
I am using a Mac.
With Disk Utility, 6 partitions visible but only 3 can be mounted and explored.
For the other 3, repair is impossible.

I will try to recover my partitions (and especially my data) with TestDisk.

Given the number of posts online, I advise all owners of Lacie Ethernet Disc (mini or Big) to back up their data (I really regret not doing it...)

Same symptoms... ethernet bigdisk 1 TB... I'm on my 3rd power supply provided by Lacie as part of the support! They assured me that I shouldn't have any problems with the latest one, new series, but it's starting to not work as well after a few weeks!
How are the drives? SATA? IDE?

Too bad, as it's recognized without any issues by Windows 7, unlike my DNS-313 from Dlink!

I disassembled my EDmini v2 that I mentioned to you earlier.

The hard drive is a Seagate 7200.10 with 500GB.
I mounted it in a USB enclosure.
Once connected to my Mac, I encountered 6 partitions that could not be read.

One of which is in XFS.
After trying it on Linux, I recovered my data.

Then, I contacted LaCie who will send me a power supply.

A piece of advice for all LaCie NAS owners: make backups of your NAS and do not use these NAS for your backups.

As for me, I use 2 NAS disks! Dlink DNS-313 (cheap, but slow, and for now not very usable for me with Windows 7... I also had access issues, a while ago, only software-related) and Lacie (the only problem is the power supply, but it's recurring...). In fact, I trust no hard drive, NAS or not... had too many failures over the years! I back up the system, but mainly my photos, on multiple supports!
Thank you, Rosel, I know thanks to your message that the disk contents are still readable if the casing breaks for good... under Linux, of course, but that's not a problem for me.

That said, a NAS server is so convenient! Does a trouble-free, solid, and stable one exist?

For data recovery from a hard drive coming from a NAS and installed in a USB enclosure:

I tested 2 utilities:
- TestDisk, which, as its name suggests, allows for partition repair and partition table repairs. It comes with PhotoRescue, which enables data recovery (initially for recovering photos from a mistakenly deleted memory card); it recovers a lot of data, but it takes a lot of time (patience is required) with impractical names (related to the sector number on the storage device) (one must be very patient to find what they're looking for among the 500GB of my NAS). The great advantage of these two utilities is that they are free and available for many systems. They provide the same results as many paid software. Personally, I love this kind of savings.

- systemrescuecd is a free UNIX system that you burn onto a bootable CD. Then, you restart on this CD. You find yourself in a command-line Unix environment (2 graphical interfaces are offered, but none worked for me due to driver issues). After searching online, it's easy to find the few basic commands needed to browse your disks and make copies.

This latter solution allowed me to recover all my files with the names and folder organization as I had created on my NAS. Perfect.

These 2 free solutions accept donations. Instead of investing in paid software or even entrusting your hard drives to companies promising data recovery for a fortune, a small donation in case of success is much more advantageous.

One downside to be aware of before dismantling the hard drive from your NAS to remount it in an external enclosure: the warranty is void!!!!!

Everyone will choose whether to keep a warranty without their data or to recover their data by losing the warranty of their NAS.

Thank you for this information. For partition recovery, I have "Paragon" software, which is very effective, except in some particular cases, I don't know why... But by alternating between Paragon and Windows and/or Linux installation disks, I've always managed to recover the partitions and their content... Paragon is especially useful, like many other software, for partition backup. But it is paid software. I bought the first one years ago, when free options were rare or nonexistent, and I continue to update...
The file recovery tools, especially for photos, are numerous, but the problem, as you pointed out, is the changed naming of files... When there are thousands, you can imagine!
Since NAS servers are almost always running Linux, I wonder if a simple installation of a "live" CD (like Ubuntu, for example) would suffice to recognize and recover! But my current problem is that on the computer I use the most, I cannot get the recent graphics card to be recognized!

Ultimately, to return to the Lacie, I plan to handle the power issue like this: I will plug it alone into a power strip with a switch, and after turning off the disk every night, cut the power so it can cool down. But Lacie should seriously consider changing suppliers; that would be the only responsible solution! If I knew how to tinker, I would strengthen the power supply, but that’s not my case... and the output is very specific, impossible (for me) to use another more "standard" power supply!
Another downside of the big disk is the lack of automatic sleep mode.

I reiterate my question: who knows of a NAS without issues? (in hardware accessible to an individual!)

I was too afraid of not recovering my data. A week of research to reach satisfaction is a lot.  This adds to the moderate satisfaction I had with this NAS: Advantages: - Easy to install and use - Interesting features depending on the models (mine does (or did): ftp, afp, smb, itunes server, upnp AV server (great with my Freebox that has been managing this server system for a few months)  Disadvantages: - Systems quite obscure for most of the market (not to say proprietary for some) - Slowness - No sleep mode (for the LaCie) - Lack of reliability - No automatic backup system (at least on affordable models)   The next network storage solution will therefore be an old Mac G4 with Tiger (or Leopard) system that I will buy second-hand (150/200€). For PC users, there should be solutions from a few years ago in the same price range (or less) with a Linux installation like Ubuntu (cf FreeNas, simpler).  Then, I will install 2 1TB hard drives (Samsung seems to be very good). The first will be for my data, the second for Auto Backup (unless I decide on a RAID by then but that seems more complicated to me). The disadvantages of NAS previously mentioned will therefore disappear. The only ones that might deter the most skeptical will come from the format of the tower. A bit bulky with perhaps a fan to change for noise (the LaCie is also a bit noisy. Constant humming). But well, in my garage, it shouldn't bother me too much.

Hello,  Having a crash of the Lacie edmini V2 disk, did anyone create a disk image under Linux of their edmini V2 (without the data!!) to have the images of the partitions? It's a hassle. No support since if you want to recover the data, you have to break the warranty (what a shame!!)  This could help me a lot!!!   Thank you in advance.
