Hello,
I just bought an Acer Aspire One and I already have a big problem! Argh!
I fiddled with the packages using the "add/remove" programs option and apparently removed things that I shouldn't have because I can't even start it anymore... This is my first experience with Linux and I have to say I'm pretty upset about it!
The restoration DVD is nice and all, but I don't have an external USB DVD drive...
So, on a regular PC, I wanted to make a restoration USB stick (using an SD card in an adapter) but it doesn't work...
In the end, can we find somewhere (on the internet? on the DVD?) the files to put on the USB stick? Can we do it "manually" from the DVD (copy/paste what is needed) from a Windows PC?
Thanks for your replies ^^

Hi
To create a recovery USB, you need another PC or an external DVD drive and a USB stick of more than 1GB. As for me, I did it with another PC.
You put your recovery DVD in the drive and it offers (2nd line) to create a USB stick. That's it! It's that simple :)
Then you plug the USB stick into your One and turn it on. The recovery happens automatically. -

Maybe your PC is starting from the hard drive and not from the USB drive.
At startup, when you see the Acer logo, press F2 (or F12, I can't remember) and change the boot priority, putting your USB drive first.
All of this is explained in the documentation that comes with the One... You need to read a little :D -

Indeed, it is enough to reformat it under Windows... but with a smaller key... Operation to be repeated with a smaller key... which will only be used for that and nothing else.
-
Just signal it then... :-)
P.S: At the top.

Hello, and well, it's a mess here.. I tried to create this key from my main PC (Windows) and the DVD to install Linux on my PC, and since then it's completely crashed!!!
When I put the DVD in for the first time, nothing happened, I couldn't launch a file from the DVD and no installation?? Then I rebooted the PC with the DVD in the drive and bam grrrrrrr
Is my DVD good? Can we create a USB key on the ac er site? I'll take a look and keep you informed... -
By the way, if I want to reformat my Acer, it's because all the internet functions are no longer working, and it's impossible to open my network center; nothing appears, and there's no small icon next to the battery status. But maybe you have another solution, thank you in advance.
-
I have the same problem. Yesterday, I downloaded updates and since then I no longer have access to the network center and thus to the internet. No more little icon next to the battery status!
I copied the DVD to a USB stick. I wanted to reformat the Aspire One from the USB stick after changing the priority in the BIOS. Nothing happens.
If you have any ideas, thank you.- Restoration via USB key is very hit or miss. For some it works, for others the mere attempt to format the USB key using the CD/DVD provided with the Acer Aspire One COMPLETELY ruins the partition table of the computer on which this formatting was attempted. Beware of the danger!
It is 10,000 times better to buy an external USB DVD drive (it's not expensive: 50-80 euros) and it works perfectly for restoring the "linpus" system on Acer Aspire One.
On the other hand, I must say that ACER hardware is not of good quality... mine died after 2 months, it's in warranty service and I'm only getting it back next year... in my opinion either the graphics card or worse: the motherboard is DEAD.
Not very good quality Acer...

Help!!!
I don't even know if I'm in the right topic.
But, well, I'm in a panic.
I wanted to create a USB recovery drive for an Acer notebook, but my external hard drive was plugged in.
I chose USB as indicated and I think it was done on the external HDD.
Since then, it is no longer detected by the PC.
Help!!!!
Thank you all...-
Hello, I have a problem; I no longer have access to the network center. Please help me.
Tell me how to create a recovery key.
Thank you.- Hi Bibo,
So, the restoration CD didn't offer me the option to automatically create the USB key; here's how I did it from my husband's laptop (an Asus, so I don't know if it's the same on other PCs):
You'll need a blank USB key of at least 2 GB.
Turn off your second computer, insert the restoration CD and the USB key.
You can then turn it back on by tapping "Escape" as soon as it starts up.
Select the "CD/DVD" option as choice number 1, press enter and VERY QUICKLY (otherwise your computer will stay with that version!!!) select the SECOND choice with the arrows. Press enter and it's on, your key will prepare itself. Two or three confirmation messages will be sent to you during the creation of your key, press yes each time.
Then, once your key is created (wait until the end for the confirmation message, even if "100%" is displayed),
turn off your Acer Aspire One. Insert your USB key and turn it back on by tapping F12. You just have to follow the instructions, normally you shouldn't encounter any problems. I noticed that on Aspire One with Linux, you should avoid updates with Live Update, it messes everything up. A bit unstable after all. I'm going to try to go back to Win XP.
I hope this post will be helpful to you!!
Hugs, Marie. - Hello, I tried to create a recovery USB for the Aspire One with my PC, but after clicking on create recovery USB drive there is a first step welcome, I clicked next, then a selected step where I need to choose the USB but nothing is displayed, there is nothing to select and I cannot continue, the computer restarts on the CD and it happens again.
Does anyone have a solution?
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
I wanted to thank you all for your help!!! I had a problem during the restoration with the USB key of the ACER. Indeed, tapping on the pad didn't work, I had to use the button to click on the arrow... It was quite simple, but if you hadn't mentioned it, I would have never found it!
Thanks again to you.

No, no, you shouldn't say that... Linux runs well on the Acer Aspire One! It's just the recovery key that is causing issues! And no one can help me... I'm looking, but I'm afraid that the disk might crash my PC, that's all.
-
Good evening, actually I didn't have to restore my Acer One, it runs perfectly! I just made a recovery USB. It was the Linux that was installed on my main PC that messed everything up... but not on the Aspire!
NB: I was able to create this key, but be careful, I used an 8GB key, don't do that! :p
Use a smaller key, since then I can't use it with Windows, only on Linux! A word to the wise..... -
Hello,
I plan to buy the Aspire One with an 8 Gb SD card to increase the memory. Can I put the restore on the 8 Gb SD card and leave it in my Acer? (Of course, I will set in the BIOS for it to boot from the internal disk). -
If I understand correctly, you leave your 4GB key in the slot, with documents, images, etc., AND the recovery, which takes just over 1GB, is that right?
And you say there are two SD slots? So I can have, for example:
8GB base in the PC
8GB in the first slot
8GB in the second?-
What you need to know is that the Aspire One actually has 2 SD slots, managed in very different ways.
The first one (on the left) is used to increase the netbook's capacity. The SD card inserted in this slot is not recognized as an SD card, but the internal memory capacity increases. The capacity of the SD card is "merged" with the internal memory.
The second one (on the right) is a classic multi-format reader.
In my case, I have: 8 GB internal (actually only 6.5 GB...) + 1 SDHC card of 4 GB in the first slot, which stays there permanently + 1 SD card of 1 GB in the other slot that goes back and forth to my MP3 player.
Why do you want to keep the recovery files? Personally, I formatted my SD card after recovery. I would make another one if needed.
Hoping I responded clearly.

Following a small issue related to language settings, I contacted a technician from Acer who booted the system without using the restoration DVD, and now everything works wonderfully; expect about 10 minutes of assistance.

Hello everyone,
So here's the problem I encountered today:
I simply wanted to create a recovery USB stick to have it on me in case of issues (I'm a Linux engineer ^^).
So I put the Acer One DVD in my main PC, started the USB stick creation, and BAM!!! I get an ERROR 39 message contact Linpus support!!!
I reboot my PC and there it is a disaster: it messed up my MBR (basically the partition table of the PC and it can no longer boot)!! Panic because 1TB of data...
With Hiren's boot CD, I was able to recover some of it (1 complete disk out of 2).
So now I'm on standby, if anyone has any ideas because the Linpus website isn't working...
The version of Linpus is 1.0.6 (written on the ACER DVD).
Thank you. -
Hello Fanchi!
I tried the same thing you did, and indeed, the SD card in a USB adapter doesn't work. So you need a real USB stick. Start the Acer DVD, create your USB stick (second option in the Acer menu), and then boot your Aspire One with the USB stick, using the F12 key to select the boot from USB.
Best regards, -
For the network issue, go search the forum www.aspire-one.net ... you just need to reset the config file managing the wifi. The steps are detailed on the forum, but I can't remember where.
-
Hi, I had the SAME PROBLEM as you
and it messed up 2 PCs for me...
I lost the MBR on one and access to the second internal disk on the other...
no key was recognized (2 pre-formatted keys)
that Aspire One DVD is a REAL JUNK... DANGEROUS
I'm going to go to the seller (purchased 5 days ago) to say what I think about it.
But have you at least solved your problem??? And if so, how?
Hardware brand USB, etc.) -
Everyone talks about Linux as a problem on Acer One and under which distribution? Debian, Gentoo, SuSE, Mandriva... but Linux is not Windows. It's not the same thing. Think wisely, but Linux works 5 times better than Windows, even more.

@ steph
first of all, if you don’t mind
1. you’re not charged by the character so: don’t hesitate to write in French
2. and then: who criticized Linux? no one.
3. we’re talking about a poorly made DVD that has frozen several systems, okay? so this has nothing to do with it, it's not a "linux-windows confrontation." by the way, I use 3 PCs and all three are dual boot XP - Ubuntu or Fedora or Xubuntu each system has its advantages and disadvantages.
4. we’re not going to condemn a car brand or a type of engine just because a headlight bulb supplier has a bad product that blows fuses, okay? it's the same.
5. well goodbye, thank you

Since September I have been using Linux on the Aspire One:
A beautiful success but I took a while to understand the system as I usually run on Windows XP or VISTA.
So I wanted to know how it is that we were provided with a disk when it is obvious that the Aspire One does not have a (disk drive).
My question is brief but especially do not try to install another operating system on the ACER Aspire ONE, you will struggle.
Good to know....
