Hello, I would like to know if it's still possible to boot from a USB key (containing a Slax distribution) even though the BIOS does not offer that option? (Toshiba laptop)
If not
Can we flash the BIOS to make it USB bootable?

Look at BootPart and EasyBCD. These two utilities allow you to manipulate the Windows boot to add your USB device. If the BIOS doesn't support booting from USB, Windows will take over as long as you have a functional installation.
BootPart is aimed at all versions of Windows up to XP, it manipulates NTDLR
EasyBCD is aimed at all versions starting from Vista (Vista, Windows 7), it manipulates BootMGR
There is a solution to place Windows on a bootable USB stick to install it without a CD: WinToFlash, which is illegal even if you own a license, but from an "eco-friendly" perspective, the absence of a CD that could get lost or scratched seems interesting.
Otherwise, I use Ubuntu and there are many tools to use USB boot via a CD that handle all this: http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/cd_boot_usb

And a little message from COM. to all those who have a pirated version of Windows: switch to Ubuntu (or other Linux versions), it’s easy, free, legal... Everything is recognized from the first try, no more virus or intrusion problems, the risks become minimal compared to the Microsoft world. You can receive it for free by mail if you don't have internet and test everything without installing anything thanks to the "Live-CD" option.

Additional information: it is possible to use "Plop Linux," which is a live CD. Once booted from the CD, you can choose to run any USB drive of your choice in a simple and transparent manner.

These options do not allow adding "usb.zip" or any other boot option on USB in the BIOS boot menu... they only allow choosing between the different operating systems already installed on the machine... this does not solve the problem: how to boot from a USB stick when this option is not in the BIOS! Is it absolutely necessary to "upgrade" the BIOS? Where can we find these programs? Thank you.
