Acer Aspire One ZG5 problem
Solved
Hello everyone,
Here as the title indicates, I have a small problem with my Acer Aspire One ZG5. Previously it ran Linux, but I had Windows XP installed (by a friend) which has greatly slowed it down.
I went on vacation by plane this summer and I put my netbook in the overhead bin with the luggage. The problem is that once I arrived at my destination and tried to turn on my PC, I noticed there was an issue. When I press the power button, the PC (or rather the fan, in my opinion) starts up for 4 seconds and then turns off. Nothing is displayed during that time, the screen stays black.
The hard drive indicator does not light up.
I have already tried turning it on with the battery removed and plugged into the mains, but it doesn’t work.
I also tried flashing the BIOS, but nothing to do, I put the latest version on the root of a 1GB USB stick formatted FAT, held Fn + Esc and pressed power but same thing, … 4 seconds and then it shuts off, so flashing is impossible.
Does anyone have any idea?
Do you think it’s more likely a hardware problem?
Thanks in advance.

I don’t really understand why you’re posting on the Linux forum if there’s only one Windows on this PC anymore.
Anyway, it looks like a hardware problem; otherwise you’d at least see the BIOS display. It smells like a big jolt in the hold... -
I didn’t know where to put this topic, so if someone could redirect me to the right section that would be helpful.
Yes, that’s what I was thinking (what a idea to put a PC in the luggage hold anyway :s, I’ve learned my lesson now).
Based on what I told you, could you steer me toward a specific type of hardware that could be damaged (motherboard, power supply...) ? Or could it be anything and everything? -
Honestly, it’s hard to say, it could be the RAM, the motherboard (for example a thermal sensor), a component acting up...
Since it’s a laptop, it’s hard to swap parts to rule out or test components. Is it still under warranty?
If the disk can be removed, it would be good to save your data.
Try checking the hardware forum.

Good luck -
I don’t really have anything in particular to save, actually.
Unfortunately it’s no longer under warranty, otherwise I would have directly gone to the after-sales service to save you this headache.
I also noticed that when I turn it on it sometimes stays on (well, the fan runs), but once plugged into mains power it turns off again as mentioned above—perhaps a power supply issue?
I completely dismantled it to check if there were any components damaged, but I didn’t notice anything (well, I’m not an electronics pro either ^^).
I’ll go look on the hardware forum as you advised.
I really hope I can repair it because a little netbook is always handy, and I wouldn’t want to have to reinvest in a new one.
Thanks for your help. -
Yep good luck. Think to add in this discussion a link to the new thread you will open in the hardware forum.
Good continuation !
