MKV playback on PS3 Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,

I would like to know the best method to play .mkv files on my PS3 without losing quality if possible :)
How to convert it and how to burn it?

There are already quite a few topics about this but each time there are partial and different answers, so if someone could tell me what the best way to do this is.........

To play an MKV on the PS3, nothing could be easier.
Just convert it to an .avi file (no loss of quality)

To do this:

Go to your folder (under Vista or 7), click at the top on "Organize" > "Folder and Search Options" > "View" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

Then rename your file by changing ".mkv" to ".avi" and confirm! There you go.

reading an mkv on the ps3

some of you (like me) have trouble reading or transferring your mkvs to the ps3 with wmp or others; sometimes it only transfers a few minutes of the movie sad.gif see the topic
with this method, no mkv has resisted me until now; if there is a DTS track, you will need to encode the audio for remuxing)
I only test 1 video track + 1 audio track)

open your mkv with TSmuxer 1.8.4b

select only the video/audio track(s) that interest you
if you cannot decode the DTS convert it to AC3==> explained here and add it in TSmuxer

if it appears that the h264 level is greater than 4.1, select the h264 stream, check "change level" and set it to 4.1

in Output, select TSmuxing and click at the bottom on "Start Muxing"

once the file is output as .ts, rename it to .m2ts!!
I do it this way because I noticed that if I put the .m2ts extension directly on TSmuxer, some videos have no image (black screen...)
with this method, no mkv has resisted me until now!

LET'S MOVE ON TO HFS to transfer your m2ts to the hard drive of the ps3 (NO this will not be streaming smile.gif ))

right-click on your freshly modified .m2ts and "Add HFS"
the HFS log opens showing the file appearing at the root of the local http

on the playstation 3, launch the web browser
and go to the local network address (for me http:\\10.0.0.2 (you can add the port :8080 just in case ^^

on the browser screen, you see your m2ts file
go to it and press TRIANGLE==> FILE=> SAVE TARGET, and confirm

you can see the progress on your PC on HFS with the transfer rate, remaining time, etc...
THAT'S IT! Enjoy your movie

edit: HFS works for all types of transfers to the ps3 (music, photos, videos)

TO WATCH AN MKV ON PS3:

1) You need an MKV ;-)

2) MKV codecs: Download Combined Community Codec Pack (It is very comprehensive)

3) Download the MultiavcHD software

4) Launch MultiavcHD and add the movie

5) Click on start to begin the conversion

6) Choose Playstation 3

7) Conversion time: - If your movie is already in 720p or 1080p resolution = 1 minute per gigabyte
- If your movie is in another format, for example 780p = Too much time
