Is it advisable to uninstall JAVA from so?

Hello,

I am facing serious problems with my computer due to a full hard drive (the situation is critical according to my PC). Since I currently have no intention of buying an external hard drive, I need to make some space! I see that the Java software (it's specifically called Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1) is taking up 160MB of space on my hard drive. Am I exposing myself to any problems if I delete it?
I don't really know much about computers, so please tell me quickly if I'm making a big mistake by deleting it or if, on the contrary, it's not that serious!

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, JAVA is important for browsing the internet...

If you want to free up space quickly, unplug Emule and delete a lot of movies in your incoming folder...

JAVA is not an essential element for the PC to function; you won't be able to see certain things on the internet, but otherwise, it's not dangerous.
What software do you have and what is the total capacity?
Have you cleaned the disk? Defragmentation?
They should be done first before uninstalling.

Okay,
I'm not going to uninstall it then.
Defragment my computer? Yes, I roughly know how to do that, but I've been told it's very time-consuming; can I continue using it in the meantime?
I have no idea what the name of my software is... My PC is an ACER 3634WLCi with an Intel Celeron M processor 380. Its capacity is 40GB HDD... is that what you needed?

Thank you very much for your answers.

What are the other software that are in "Uninstall Programs" (in other words JAVA...AND?)
And I agree with weetabix40.

40GB is just...

For defragmentation, the best way is to do it in safe mode and not use your PC

> Restart and tap F8 during startup.
- go to start / all programs / Accessories System Tools / defragment the disk

Sure!

So I defragmented my disk (in safe mode as you advised), and it was very quick, there are some files that it couldn't defragment (I don't know why) and above all, it doesn't change anything at all, I still have very little space on my hard drive...
Otherwise, apart from Java, I can delete
- Adobe Flash player (there are 2: the plugin and 'Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX')
- Adobe Reader 7.0.9
- Avast Antivirus
- Java(TM) 6 Update 5 (136MB) and the one I wanted to delete: Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 (160MB)
- Windows Media Player
- Microsoft Office
- Mozilla Firefox
- MSN
- lots of little programs 'SIS..."
- Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
- Windows Live Messenger
- Windows Media Format 11 runtime

That's the main thing... So you see, I don't really know what I can delete!
Do I need to clean my hard drive otherwise?

Thank you again for your help!!

In this case, it's your documents that take up space...

If you've never defragmented, it should have lasted at least 40 minutes

exact.
You need to delete movies or videos that are too large for it to defragment. (You don't have to be in safe mode to defragment; try again and it will show you in the report the files that are preventing defragmentation (the defragmentation was only done partially).
