Problem joining a domain Solved

Hello,

I have just migrated an NT server to a Mandriva cs4 and everything seems to be working smoothly except that I cannot join a new computer to the domain.

When I try, I get this error message and I don't really understand what the issue is:

The domain name TATA may be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, please verify that this domain name is correctly registered with WINS. If you are sure this name is not a NetBIOS domain name, the following information may help you diagnose your DNS configuration: The following error occurred while requesting the DNS resource record for the Service Location (SRV) to find a domain controller for the domain TATA: The error was: "The operation timed out." (error code 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT) The request was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.TATA. The DNS servers being used by this computer for name resolution are not responding. This computer is configured to use the DNS servers with the following IP addresses: 10.202.268.5 10.143.1.178 Please check that this computer is connected to the network, that these are the correct DNS server addresses and that at least one of the DNS servers is operational. For troubleshooting information, click Help.

Could you please help me or at least give me a lead to explore

I have almost the same problem.
Unable to join XP Pro to the domain with Windows 2003 server, even though DHCP and DNS are working very well.
I can ping the clients as well as the server.
I still get the message 'unable to join the machine to the network, please check the network access path.'

I had the same issue, do you have a WINS??? In smb.conf, set the WINS server to yes so that Samba takes care of it. Then set the address of your WINS (e.g., 192.168.1.1, replace with your server's address) on your client. That's probably where it came from, it was the case for me. Now I have a problem with authentication to join the XP machine to the domain, but that's another thing.

I also had a problem joining my Samba PDC domain ('_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs. /SRV/IN' denied)

Thanks to activating the WINS server on Samba (wins = yes) and configuring the WINS setting on the client machine (address of the Samba server), everything is now working correctly!

Thank you for these ideas that saved me a lot of time!
