Hello,

I have Office 2019 on my Windows 10 computer.

Using the Google Play Store, I downloaded and installed Excel on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Android

I then copied Excel files to my Galaxy but can't open them!

A window opens "Sorry...This version of Microsoft Excel can't decrypt this file."

Yet, they are indeed Excel 2019 files.

There is only one updated version on the Google store...

What is causing this issue?

Thank you for your future information.

Hello,

is the file on One Drive?

Good evening.

Thank you for the response.

All the files are on the mobile's ROM memory.

Hello,

yg_be's comment is relevant.

It seems to me that in the free version (without a Microsoft 365 subscription) Microsoft 365 for Android has not only a lot of limitations (for example, it cannot open xls, but for Excel 2019 there’s no reason, or I believe it can't modify an Excel file) but also, like Google Sheets, it can only handle files stored on OneDrive (there is also a local storage option, but maybe only in the paid version?).

For simple occasional viewing, I have never tried editing, and I have no shares, I use Collabora Office which accepts local files.

Hello.

Thank you for the reply.

I have indeed purchased Office 365 which I installed on the computer. On my Galaxy, Office was part of the offered bundle. So I downloaded the pre-installed one on my phone.

Is Excel on the phone properly linked to the Microsoft account used for the Microsoft 365 license?

On the other hand, were the files copied while preserving their names?

Why not use One Drive, at least for testing?

Hello,

By the way, at my place since S22, S23, and S24, I can open Excel files.

To that end, I installed the Excel app from the Play Store …

Hello.

Thank you for your responses.

- I purchased Office 365 2019 which is installed on my PC. On Play Store, the version was updated in October 2024.

Files copied with the same name and the same extension.

One Drive, same incident.

I tested with a PDF, XLS document reader. This reader opens my PDF files correctly but indicates "File parsing error" for Excel.

Is Excel on the phone properly linked to the Microsoft account used for the Microsoft 365 license? Is this license usable on multiple devices?

Hello,

Are you sure it's Microsoft 365 because it says I bought Office 365 2019 ....?

Good evening.

Thank you for the new responses.

I cannot share because it is a file of my usernames and passwords that I have locked with an Excel password.

My license is intended for 3 devices.

Sorry for the mistake, it is Office 2019.

Actually, I don't use Excel on my mobile.

I just wanted to upload this "Usernames Passwords" file to internal storage in case I need it when I am not at home.

If another app on Android allows me to transfer this file and lock it with a password, I am open to using something other than Excel.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I suggest checking out the Samsung Secure Folder option which may be helpful for you. Here is the link: The secure folder and how to use it | Samsung BE_FR

Hello,

I conducted a test with an Excel file version 2006 (xls) that I saved on my S24 and then opened normally with the Excel application, and it can be placed in Samsung's Secure Folder.

Hello.

Thank you for your help and the time spent on my issue.

I have indeed performed the operation you described, even with older versions of Excel than mine, but I am still encountering the same problem.

I uninstalled/reinstalled everything without any results.

I will try to find an app that works on Android where I can store my credentials and possibly lock this content directly within the app, as I already have my smartphone locked.

Hello,

Can you present the same images related to your Samsung S22...?

You say this: I uninstalled/reinstalled everything without result... please specify exactly what.....?

It's surprising, I also have an S22 and everything works with Excel files.

What license is used by this Excel on Android?

Good evening.

Thank you for your responses.

In fact, on my Android mobile, I uninstalled Excel from the Play Store and reinstalled it. Then, I deleted my Excel file from Office 2019 and copied it back to my mobile. Same issue.

However, I discover that some features are not accessible if you do not have Microsoft 365!

On Android, I can't figure out what version is offered in the Play Store.

I think it's a licensing issue, not a version one.

Microsoft 365 is not a specific version of Office, it's a way to obtain a license.

Not quite; basically, subscription-based Microsoft 365 or Office 2021 for sale have features missing in previous versions, but in any case, it's out of the question to install a "fixed" Office version like 2019 on a phone.
