Canon Powershot A 80 issue

Solved

Hello,
After having a Canon Powershot A80 as a faithful companion for 2 years (lots of memories together...), it
let me down and doesn't want to turn on, even with changing batteries, recharging, nothing works. Well, 6 months ago, I bought, second-hand,
another A80 (the same model) which worked perfectly until 2 weeks ago: since then it has been temperamental, showing
pink horizontal bands that partially obscure the image, both on the LCD screen while shooting and on the displayed photo. Then sometimes, nothing, everything is fine, then it comes back, and now, it's happening more frequently...
Does anyone know what’s going on?
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

    Good evening everyone,

Here is the procedure to follow to have the defective CCD sensor replaced on a CANON device recognized as a manufacturing defect.
I would like to specify that I am not committing at any time to a 100% success rate for this procedure, as the authorized workshop that will open the camera is the one that ultimately decides whether the failure is indeed due to the defective CCD sensor.

As dub7821 said in a previous message, you first need to go to the following page on the CANON website:
    https://www.canon.fr/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_compact/digital_ixus_series/digital_ixus_500.html?faqtcmuri=tcm:79-522149&page=1&type=faq

There you will find an explanation of the problem as well as the list of devices affected by the problem as of 27/08/2009 (which I will relay below):

    Digital IXUS 330
    Digital IXUS 400
    Digital IXUS 430
    Digital IXUS 500
    Digital IXUS II
    DIGITAL IXUS II S
    Digital IXUS V2
    Digital IXUS V3
    PowerShot A40
    PowerShot A60
    PowerShot A70
    PowerShot A75
    PowerShot A80
    PowerShot A85
    PowerShot A95
    PowerShot A300
    PowerShot A310
    PowerShot S1 IS
    PowerShot S60
    MV5 MV5i
    MV5i MC
    MV6i MC
    MV590
    MV600
    MV600i
    MV630i
    MV650i
    MV690
    MV700
    MV700i
    MV730i
    MV750i

Then, find the CANON service center where you would like to send your device by clicking on the following link:
https://www.canon.fr/support/consumer_products/contact_support/ (tab "authorized workshops" = there are about a dozen in France).

Call the authorized center explaining your problem, and specifying that according to your research on the canon site, it seems to you that it is a faulty CCD sensor issue (CCD sensor problem listed under FAQ No. 37383 on the CANON France website)

Make sure to have explained the procedure for handling, but normally it should be as follows:

    - send your camera well protected and at your expense (choose registered with acknowledgment of receipt) after having removed the batteries and memory card beforehand. Add a note with the return address, your camera number (NOTE it on a paper that you keep with you before sending). Include a brief explanatory letter in your shipment (you can copy/paste what follows):

Subject: handling of Canon digital camera model -- (possible CCD sensor issue)

    Dear Sir or Madam,

Following our phone conversation on XX/XX, and in accordance with your request, please find my Canon camera model -- (serial number -------) which exhibits all the symptoms of a CCD sensor failure covered by Canon (listed under FAQ No. 37383 on the CANON website).

I remain at your disposal for any further information and I express my best regards.

    - If this is indeed the issue, the camera should be returned to you within 10 days by registered mail at their expense.
    - Personally, I have used the center located in the 82 area twice, they are very welcoming and efficient.

Now it’s your turn to act…

      Thank you so much Mirliton,

I contacted Canon, I explained my situation, and I got a case number. I dropped off my Powershot at a Canon center. I picked it up 1 week later. It seems to be working. The repair cost me €0!!! If it breaks down again, we can still get it repaired. So no hesitation.

Hello, I also followed the procedure to repair my PowerShot A80 camera. No problem, it cost me €8 for shipping. In the end, my camera was returned to me and repaired. I just want to thank you for the information and advice shared on this forum that may be useful again.

      Hello,
I encountered CCD sensor issues with my PowerShot A80 camera, which is about 4 years old.
I followed the procedure found on the website:
      - Phone call to the authorized repairer for the Southwest
      - Sending the camera with a cover letter
I received my properly repaired camera within 10 days of shipping it. I appreciated being able to track the progress of the repair ticket online during that time.
As a reference, the cost of the repair covered by Canon is 61.01 Euros, and a function check was performed at the end of the work.

A big thank you to everyone for the information provided on this site.

Remarks: Some people complain about getting blurry photos after the repair. I think that after the sensor replacement, the distance from the lens may change (focus issue), and the image focus then occurs before or after the CCD sensor.
For me, this check and adjustment should be systematically performed by the repairer after their intervention.

      Hello,
I apparently have the same problem as everyone else. My A80 is taking strange pink/purple photos and sometimes the screen won't turn on (so the camera takes black photos). Do you know if Canon's support can be done for free even though the camera is no longer under warranty (a comment said that support was provided even though the warranty had expired a few months ago)? My device is almost 6 years old to the day. Thank you for your feedback.

      Good evening,

What is the point of asking the same question multiple times when the answers are available at the top of the page?

None of us can identify with Canon's customer service and even less take a position regarding a possible repair.
I can only imagine your reaction if someone were to tell you no :-)

With Mirliton, it seems that we clearly indicated the steps to follow..... so go ahead before Canon changes its mind.

Best regards to all of you.

    Here is my late response,
The device has been repaired by the authorized Canon service center and is working perfectly. Return at their expense within 10 days. This failure will have cost me the shipping of the device by registered mail to the center (around 10 euros).
In case of CCD sensor issues on these devices, the indicated procedure is the one to follow. Thank you for your help. @+

      Hello,

I also have the same sensor issue with my A80 since spring. Could you let me know what steps to follow (Canon's phone number, etc.)? Of course, I do not wish to pay for repair costs, only the shipping fees like you.
I was ready to buy a new device when I came across the forum. Thank you...

    Thank you dub7821

I just got in touch with CANON France, my contact confirmed that the repair is free of charge for this issue, he gave me a case number and I'm going to drop off my camera tomorrow, it's quick.

      Hello gbyglt80,

my A80, bought in 04.2004, which has never had any issues. A few weeks ago, everything works including the screen but it seems that the sensor is no longer functioning (black screen). The device has never been dropped! I'm really sad about having to throw it away. I have already purchased an A650 IS as a replacement but I would like to get the A80 fixed.
Can you give me the procedure to get Canon France to handle the repair (contact details).

      Thank you in advance.

        Thank you very much!
I sent an email to Canon, which assigned me a case number, then I called one of the approved centers (the one in department 82). A lovely person on the phone calmly explained the procedure to me, making it clear that if the failure is "my fault" (dropping the device) or anything other than this CCD sensor issue, it won't be covered. I'm sending the device at the end of the week and I'll get a response within 10 days.
I'll keep you updated on what happens next...

        See you later!

YES Hello, I have exactly the same problem as you with my A95. It's disappointing because I've missed more than half of my holiday photos. Otherwise, it has always worked perfectly
Can you give me a phone number to contact CANON to have it repaired for free

Hello, I had the same issue. Following the advice from Canon France, I took it to the technical center in my area. The diagnosis was that the CCD sensor disconnects sometimes, like a loose connection on the connectors – a very well-known problem with Canon. The sensor was replaced for free, which didn’t cost me anything, but I’m not sure if this is still possible; it’s best to check urgently with Canon France. The device is great and has given me so many beautiful photos; it goes everywhere with me. Even if this response may no longer be current, the compliment for the camera still stands. Best regards.

ATTENTION: Free repair until the end of April 2011 only.....(for the A80)

It’s not good on the Canon site (I was told at the reception) where it says the end of June 2011.

    Hello,
I am looking for owners of Canon Powershot A80 cameras who have the same defect but acquired their device towards the end of its commercialization and, using their camera sporadically, only noticed this hidden defect after the illegal deadline imposed by Canon in order to take group action.

It resembles the issue posed by the defective Sony sensors, but to my knowledge, the A80 is not affected unlike the A70 and A75. Too bad for the potential warranty coverage.

However, I read something on the Canon website regarding the A80. I can't remember what it was about, and I don't feel like going back to check... If you do a search, you'll see if it corresponds (same issue or not, coverage, warranty, etc.) for one of the two cameras.

Otherwise, I don't want to be a harbinger of doom, but it seems to me that a repair out of warranty is highly compromised: cost of the estimate and parts, etc...

      Hello everyone.

My A80 (after 6 years of impeccable service) is also starting to show purple stripes at the top of the photos. The warranty has long expired, but I plan to visit nearby stores to ask for quotes. If anyone has an idea of the repair costs, it would be greatly appreciated.
      Thanks in advance

      Hello,
Same symptom, ending up with a black screen for new photos.
It's the CCD sensor that's faulty.
The CCD sensor is covered by Canon.
Great, but the estimate still comes out to €100 (€56 excluding tax for labor, €17 excluding tax for zoom repair (it was working very well), + €10 excluding tax for return shipping).
I should have started by going on eBay and I would have found my happiness for €30.
      With €100, I can get a brand new A590IS!
In conclusion, I do not recommend repairing the A80 or any other device if its new equivalent does not cost €1000.
      Cheers.

Dropped off at the Courbevoie service center, picked up 3 days later.

What it could have cost me: 99 euros

I have recently been experiencing issues with my A80 camera. The lens only partially extends and the screen remains black in both photo and view modes. Sometimes the image appears for a fraction of a second and the lens struggles to retract. It feels like the batteries are insufficiently charged. It's a shame because it's a good camera that has given me complete satisfaction for over 3 years. Unfortunately, the repair costs are too high compared to the price of a new camera (quote of 60 euros, 55 euros per hour for labor not including the price of parts and the risk of another breakdown....)

        Good evening,

Same here, after 5 and a half years (purple band, pixels falling apart, blurry image...)

According to the various sellers I have met, it's quite a performance, the average lifespan of a
digital camera being 3 years... consumer society, when you think about it...

I will probably replace it with, still a Canon, A2000is and get my EOS650 back in action, a faithful companion in film photography for almost 20 years.

        Best regards to you.

My CANON Power Shot A80 (5 years old) is also acting up; when I take a photo, I get weird pictures that look like the colors are running down, with purple, green, and blue colors like in the photo in the link below (visible for a few days only). What could be the issue, how much would it cost to repair my camera??? Who else has the same problem?

Well, given the number of messages regarding a procedure request, I will provide an overview indicating the maneuver. I’m not saying it’s the best solution, but it’s the one that has been followed by at least two people (including myself) without any problems and with a quick return of the device (between 7 and 15 days).
I’ll prepare that for you this evening. For any other questions "concerning me", please include your email in the message. Thank you. Mirliton.

    Hello
First of all, thank you all for the information provided on the forum regarding the Canon PS A80. Mine, three months after the end of the 5-year warranty from the seller, gifted me with "wonderful" magenta stripes. Regarding the seller's customer service: "move along," and if you want us to handle the implementation of FAQ 37383, you have to pay a €50 handling fee, which may be refundable if... Following the advice given on the forum, I contacted the CANON APPROVED WORKSHOP in 69 directly by email, explaining the problem and attaching a photo (from the FAQ) taken by the device as well as the serial number. I received an almost immediate response: "drop off or send the device," and if it's covered, we'll repair it; otherwise, you'll get a repair estimate. Less than a week after sending it, I just received the repaired device at home. This is what I call professionalism and efficiency.

      Hello,
I also have a problem with my A80, a pink band at the top and pink-tinted photos. I'm wondering if it is the same issue. I should note that my device was dropped, but the photos that followed were fine; it was only later that the malfunction occurred.
Additionally, since I live in Lyon, could you send me the address of the Canon dealer in the 69 to whom you had emailed so that I can do the same?
      Best regards.

Too bad, I just disassembled my Ixus 500 which had the same problems 6 months ago (intermittent purple stripes at first, autofocus issues, then the sensor stopped working...)
I really didn't think that a device of this age would be covered by the manufacturer (kudos to Canon by the way, even though I would have preferred there hadn't been any failures...)
    :'( I really liked it...

Hello, I had a CCD issue with my PowerShot A80 camera, and I followed the advice shared on this forum. The CCD was replaced under warranty, and indeed, the deformation and purple color problem are gone. However, now I can no longer take a clear photo. I contacted the repair center, and they offered me a quote for a lens issue. It seems that this problem is not related to the CCD repair, but my camera never took blurry photos before it broke down. What should I think? Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? Thank you for your responses.

        Hello,

Although we can only be pleased with Canon's coverage for the sensor replacement, I still have the unpleasant impression that some customer service departments (or at least some of them, not always knowing which service it is) are profiting off consumers, who find themselves, as I did, facing the following problem: either pay around €100 to have their favorite camera repaired for a malfunction that had never been observed before, or resolve to give up on it altogether, when it’s not having to pay €25 (outrageous!) to retrieve a wreck. And if it had only happened once, perhaps we could say that it’s “just bad luck”, but now it really starts to smell like a scam!
For your information, I brought the issue to Canon, but they didn’t want to hear about it and sent me back to my service center.
In your case, the scenario is a bit different, but I still feel it’s related… unless the people at your service center are completely incompetent, since they are causing another new malfunction while fixing the previous one).
One suggestion: report your issue to a consumer protection association, or even directly to the DDCCRF in your department.

Hello and thank you for your response. I have also taken the same approach as you, which is to contact CANON; same answer, same punishment, contact the center that performed the repair.
They simply tell me that the malfunction observed has nothing to do with the CCD change. What I don't understand is that they return a supposedly repaired device without having tested it, as the blurriness issue is really apparent.
It's like I had the battery of my car changed at a garage, and 15 days later I have to change it again, and the said garage tells me: but that has nothing to do with it, it's the alternator that's unplugged! Well, I don't know if I'm making myself clear. So here's where I stand.
        Best regards.

      Hello,
I just want to share my experience with my A80 from 2003. In October 2008, I had a sensor problem with my device. I was almost resigned to throw it away when I found this forum. So I followed the instructions, which meant contacting CANON customer service. They agreed to take care of it. While passing through Marseille in May 2009, I brought my device. The repair was ultra-fast (the same day). Indeed, the sensor worked, but focusing was difficult, and when I looked at the few pictures taken, they were blurry! However, this issue didn't last long, as since then the lens has been broken! And there, no coverage from CANON!!! Since then, the device has been shelved and I'm now looking to switch to NIKON or PANASONIC.

Hello, my A80 has been showing a pink band in the shape of an H and a slightly purple image for the past two days. During focusing, the bands scroll across the LCD screen, so I’m thinking the sensor might need to be replaced?

    Hello everyone!
Here's the solution for the message
"Objective error, restart" that I had with the Powershot SX100
Gently open the cover that protects the zoom, facing downwards. Pull down while providing a support point on the side to force the stuck zoom to come out while trying to make it work. It will get stuck, then it will come unstuck!
    That's it :)
