CFlash issue on Canon EOS 400D

Solved
HOUPPILLIART -

I recently got a Canon EOS 400D and I'm encountering a problem with the CF card; the camera is no longer functioning. After trying several cards and formatting with the camera, I am unable to remove and recharge the battery, and various manipulations have not worked. When I format, ERR 99 appears on the LCD screen. Before sending the camera to an authorized service center, I wanted to know if anyone has faced this issue and if by any chance they solved it. Thank you, ZABOU

Hello everyone, I bought a Canon EOS 400D in June and since the purchase I've had problems with my flash. I thought it was due to my inexperience, but after talking to other people, I'm not sure anymore.

Here's my problem: no matter the settings, manual or auto, when I take photos with the flash on, I can't take bursts because it locks up and goes into "busy" mode.

Help.......

Erreur 99 resolved! Just mask the limits of your objective! The only problem is that the auto-focus won't work, so switch to manual!

Hello,

I just bought an EOS 400D and I'm encountering the same problem

CF card error

unable to format the card with the camera

(just to clarify, the card works with another Nikon device)

Moreover, I tried another CF card and almost the same issue occurs because the card formats well with the camera but after a few photos the card and the camera freeze. (I have to disconnect the battery to stop)

Additionally, I notice that the photo count displayed with this replacement card is completely crazy 3800 high-def photos with a 512 meg

can you help me before I have to go back to the FNAC Velizy customer service (a nightmare with customer service)

I am encountering the same issue, and on the forum, I realize that we are not alone.

My device has already been repaired for this problem, and I am experiencing it again.

Therefore, I am fully convinced that this is a manufacturing defect.

As for me, I will request a straightforward exchange, highlighting that I am not an isolated case, as you and Houppillart have mentioned.

I encourage you to do the same, and if you wish, maybe we could directly reach out to Canon's headquarters.

I am willing to do so.

You can contact me by email at

brigitte.segaud@hotmail.fr or by phone at 06 81 10 77 17.

You do what you want, she's your girlfriend ;-)

I think you should buy her a kit with a small lens included (often an 18-55mm)...
If it's not to reuse the 28-80, you can therefore possibly consider another brand than Canon...
The kit lens is never great, but it's a start...

More or less in the same price range, you have the choice:
- Canon 400D
- Nikon D40 or D40x
- Pentax K100 super
- Olympus E410 or E510
- Sony A100

Hello,
I just bought a Sigma 70-300 APO and I'm encountering the same error when I mount it on my Canon 400D.
When I take photos in program mode P and don't touch anything, there’s no problem. As soon as I change the aperture shutter speed, it refuses to take the photo and shows me error 99.
After reading your forum, I will first recharge my battery, then I will try again.
With the original lens of my Canon, I don’t have any issues.

Is it resolved for you who have the same problem? How?

Thank you in advance.

I have the same problem with my device except that for me it's with the original lens! No matter how many times I turn the device off and on or replace the battery, nothing changes!

Hello, I had the problem.
On your flash mount, there is a small button, it's right in front of the big contact pad, press it for about 3 seconds and there you go.
See you later!

Hello
I'm unable to remove and recharge the battery

This is serious because I don't see the connection between the card and the battery.

Error 99 has to do with a poorly attached lens or dirty contacts.
Each time the camera is turned off, upon turning it back on, there's error 99 and it's impossible to take pictures.

The "solution" involves turning it off (possibly removing the battery and the card, I don't remember), mounting a lens (either a Canon or a recent Sigma), turning it on, taking a photo, then changing the lens: as long as the camera doesn't turn off again, the "disputed" lens works.

Error 99 is also related to a low battery charge on lenses or heavy sequences. Have you taken the time to charge the battery properly?

Hello,
It's not a battery issue; when I turn on the device, the LCD reader displays "CF card error, change the card..." That's what I've done multiple times. I've removed and recharged the battery, turned the device on and off as recommended in the manual, but when I try to format a card, ERR 99 appears on the LCD reader. I just changed the lens, and it's stuck; I can't take any photos as you mentioned.

Hello, has your problem been resolved?
After reading on a computer, I have the same issues as you.

Here is the symptom: the lens contacts may be dirty and can be cleaned with alcohol. I had the same problem with the EOS 400D, which was not responding. It should be noted that the device cannot take photos in certain light contrasts; if the environment is too dark or too bright, the contrast does not activate, as is well formalized in the user manual.
With the Canon 18/55 lens, there are no problems for difficult shots; the Canon EOS has an automatic brightness correction synchronization that depends on the lens design and sensitivity when taking the shot.

go to http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/04/29/50mm-lens-contact-points/
You just need to take an eraser and rub it on the "gold" contacts of the camera body and the lenses. I haven't tried it yet, but...

I believe you haven't understood correctly.
Error 99 is related to a LOW battery charge, which shouldn't prevent you from seeing the screen.
Simply changing the lens and removing the battery should have unlocked it.
Feel free to go to a CANON store, they will be able to help you by unlocking it.
I have never had this issue.

Hi, I saw on this forum that you are good with computers, I have a little problem with my Canon 350D, it says "Err CF", so I can't take photos unless I format my card, what can I do to stop it bothering me with that? Thank you, reply to me at: mafiosa@laposte.net, thanks a lot.

Hello
I had a similar problem; it might come from the lens: it needs to be autofocus and a good cleaning of the contacts is always necessary
For the card, avoid formatting it with the device, it's not really made for that, but format it with a PC and in NTSC. Those are the solutions I adopted and everything works
Don't forget to clean the battery contacts too... everything oxidizes
Goodbye everyone!

I had the same problem after 140 photos!!!

I reported it to Fnac and they replaced it for me right away...

I hope I won't encounter the same issue with this 2nd Canon...

Best regards

Hello everyone,

I recently got a Canon Eos 400D.

The camera works perfectly except that... I've been getting this 99ER alarm!!!

But it only happens when I mount my Sigma 70-300 lens (which I used on my film Eos).
Here, there's no issue with the battery or the compact Flash.

I've read above that it could be due to dirty contacts on the lens???
Plus, this isn't a "permanent" issue...

No problems at all with the original lens!!

If you have any ideas, I'm all ears ;-)))
Thanks.

JP, from Liège (too)

Hi JP.
No doubt about it, error 99 is due to the fact that your SIGMA lens is not compatible with your 400D.
You can sell your 300, it won't fit on the digital body.
That's the big problem with 24x36 lenses that are no longer adaptable (unless a few rare exceptions) to current DSLRs.

Hi,

thank you for your reply,
but it's crazy, I checked with several stores and they ALL said OK, no issues with your old lens... arghhhhh !!!!!!

Well, obviously not on a 400D.
I know that older lenses can still be used on a 5D, 30D, or a MARK...

Hello,

So I have the same problem (error 99 even though the battery is fully charged, etc.), so I will contact brigitte.segaud@hotmail.fr so we can put a bit of pressure on them, because I think the 400D really has a small issue. Not great for vacation photos :(

Hello everyone!
I'm really keen on making my friend happy for Christmas, I'm going to give her a Canon EOS 400D body, she owns a Canon film SLR with her Canon lenses. Will there be any issues using her lenses? A quick response would be great. Thanks and see you soon...

Well, you're lucky! Because with the large focal lengths, hello distortions, issues with the focusing of the IS USM...

I know nothing about reflex cameras; I'm more of a compact digital kind of person, like most people. But on its lens, it says Canon Hoya 58mm UV (0), and elsewhere it says 28-80mm.
It's his sister who gifted it to him last year; I think it's therefore quite recent.
Some say there will definitely be issues, but others claim the opposite. I'm a bit lost, and I wouldn't want to buy it with a potentially useless lens. It's hard to want to please someone without knowing much about it... I hope to get a quick reply. In any case, thank you all for your advice.

"Hoya 58mm UV" is not the lens; it's the filter placed in front of it.
A low-light 28-80mm lens will have little value on the future digital SLR...
I have never encountered any incompatibility issues between Canon EF lenses and digital SLRs of the same brand... at most, there may be insufficient quality, as the constraints of film and digital are not the same. Chromatic aberrations, flare, vignetting, and reduced sharpness in the corners are amplified by the structure of the digital sensor.
On the other hand, it is fairly common for Sigma lenses not to work at all.

Thank you for this quick response, what should I do then?

Thank you for these answers, it's nice. I think I'm still going to stick with the brand; she loves it. Thanks again, and happy holidays and Merry Christmas!!!

Hello everyone.
Same error 99, same struggle...
Mr. Carrefour and Mr. Darty assured me that my old Sigma lenses, bought with an analog EOS, would fit on a 400D, and what a mistake!
I unfortunately ordered this beautiful camera online, and since I've used it, there's no way to return it, but these lenses are not 100% compatible.
I have a 28/105 that only works in auto mode or manually if I don't stray too far from the "automatic" values, and a 100/300 that almost never works outside of auto mode. So, there's little point in having a reflex...
Note that error 99 (ERR99) occurs much more often after a few dozen photos with flash, which confirms the previous statements that these lenses with questionable compatibility only work with a well-charged battery.
In short, very disappointed, as I will have to invest in a lens, which for now is not within my means...

Oh, if only I had come across such a post before buying...

Hello,
I just bought an EOS 400D and I'm having the same problems as you. I have 2 old lenses, a 28/105 and a 100/300mm that I used with my film camera. When I tried to take pictures, I got error 99. I tried again a few hours later... it was able to take the pictures. In short: it works when it wants to, sometimes yes, sometimes no... It either works or it doesn't.
Did you solve your problem or is there something to do? I really want to know if I should keep the EOS or return it.
Thank you very much! See you soon.

Hello, the effect with the Tamron sometimes results in this error 99. However, you should try to persist; the battery, when charged, should not lose its capacity, or you should clean the contacts with alcohol and then try again. To date, I have taken 18 shots with this lens without encountering error 99. You have to keep trying.
