Hello,

I received a text message from a friend (I later found out that he sent it to several people), and I got a response to this message from someone I don't know.

How is that possible?

So if I reply, will it be the same?

Thank you for your opinions.

    Hello.

This can happen with group texts.

It's a bit like a Whatsapp group, but in your phone's native messaging app.

What we call a mass text.

If you send a text in this same group, everyone will see it.

But how to know that the text message we receive is a group text?

According to the generations of phones, this is explained right from the first message with a short text at the top.

Otherwise, several names are displayed at the top of the conversation.

Furthermore, the mere fact that you receive SMS from your friend, BUT also from strangers whose numbers are shown, all within the same conversation, allows us to deduce that this is a mass SMS.

I just understood that it was for an iPhone,

At Apple, they call it group conversation.

And to see if that’s really the case, you need to tap on the group icon at the top, and you can see if there are at least 3 participants.

What bothers me in my case is that if I had replied, I wouldn't have liked (without knowing it) for my text message to be seen by the other recipients of the initial text message.

    hello

so there’s no way to know that I'm sending a text to all the recipients of the initial text?

You just have to take him aside by opening another SMS and replying to him.

Because if you stay on the group chat, the message you write will go to everyone.

Okay, but how do you know it's a group discussion? Because I see no information anywhere.

Response in <4>, which I have already provided.

If it's a group, the icon is different from that of a single person where you will have either the initials or the name.

On the group chat you currently have, when you tap on it, do you see a list of people or just one person?

Then, when you're in a chat with ONE single person (in another text I mean, okay), tap on their name at the top, and tell me what you see.

in the initial message, I only see the sender's name; if I do the same thing on a reply from someone to the initial message, I get the same thing.

if I have a conversation with ONLY one person, if I click at the top, their profile opens.

We agree that this is an iPhone, and that you are using the device's native messaging app?

      If so:

Does the group chat header not look like this?

    Hello

Which iOS is your iPhone running? It seems to me that you can only create groups and see the participants (with a different icon at the top) starting from iOS 15...

    ;)

The information is normally there; you have a group icon at the top of the discussion https://support.apple.com/fr-ch/HT202724

Does the person who created the group also have an iPhone?
