Good evening,
My father, who is constantly having issues (85 years old), calls me because his screen is black with "out of range."
He says he hasn't done anything, but I’m cautious: he always has problems with his display, which keeps turning upside down... I don't know if he's making a mistake every time. I can fix that by going into the display settings. So, I think this has happened to him again, and he tried to fix it himself and must have set it up incorrectly because I read that this out of range issue often comes from an incompatible display, meaning his screen can't display anything (for example, if it's set too high).
Anyway, I tried pressing F8 while restarting, but nothing happens: I can't get into safe mode. VGA appears in the middle of the screen briefly, then nothing, well rather: still "out of range."
What to do?
Thank you for your help.

For your information: I just connected the screen via the VGA port to my own laptop: everything works perfectly. The resolution is currently at 1920x1080 (recommended).
I don't understand.
Is it then coming from the central unit?
Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF Core I5-3470 3.2 GHz
- SSD 480 GB - RAM 8 GB OR WIFI W10
Thank you for your help.
I will try again when I'm on-site again.

Hello,
thank you for your response.
I will try safe mode again, but I read that with new PCs, there is a fast startup that does not allow for safe mode.
If this persists (since F8 is not working), I will repair Windows 10.
But this PC is new (well, bought second-hand but like new on Backmarket with, I imagine, an operational Windows 10 already installed inside. My father has hardly done anything on this PC (given as a gift at the end of December).
To be continued. I will let you know if I succeeded.
Thank you.

It doesn't seem to me that fast startup affects safe mode, but in some cases, the hibernate option in the BIOS, if it exists.
In any case, a full shutdown (which is not hibernation/sleep) allows safe mode to be restarted, even I believe if Windows has been set to not boot in "verbose" mode (by displaying the POST information at startup).
Nothing prevents a potential driver corruption even on a new PC, but if the simple solutions mentioned do not work, isn't there perhaps a warranty of a few months, rather than complicating things further, even if it is second-hand?

There are several causes, but aside from a dead graphics card, the most obvious cause for a "non-geek" is likely to have set an incompatible display resolution.
The solution typically involves booting into safe mode, which should work (press F8 repeatedly and early enough) to restart with a sufficiently low resolution.
If that doesn't work and there's a corrupted driver, you can try to repair Windows 10 without or with external media:
