Good evening,
I was given this very old HC8445 headset, with a HC8440 base.
The headset batteries are dead.
Question = Apparently, they must be replaced with special Philips ones > Why? They are > AAA - 1.2 V - 550mAh - rechargeable.
These specs are the same as a lot of rechargeable batteries.
The only difference > the battery terminal "-" is metal for 0.5 cm
The HC8440 base:
- 3.5 mm jack cable, to connect to MP3 or TV or PC = OK.
- 2.5 mm jack cable, to charge the headset batteries = I don't have it!
Question = Can I use any compatible jack cable in "mm"?
- 12V/200mA adapter = I don't have it and I don't think it's specific to Philips > no
worries because I have an entire box of adapters > I will definitely find one with the same specifications.
I await confirmation on my points regarding
- the batteries
- the 2.5 mm jack cable
- the adapter
THANK YOU all for your help.
Best regards

Hello,
According to the instructions, the batteries are R03/AAA Philips NiMH, type: SBC HB550S
The "peculiarity" of these batteries lies in the fact that the negative terminal is metal..
I assume that a bit of tinkering by removing the insulating part for 1.5 cm allows you to turn any rechargeable AAA battery into a "specific" battery.
That said, there are commercially available batteries that are directly compatible; you just need to search with the Philips reference SBC HB550S.
As for the power supply cord and adapter, it is a complete set, the cord with a 2.5mm tip is an integral part of the charger
The instructions state 12 volts/200 mA DC, center positive
So here is the type of adapter to look for

Good evening,
Thank you for your prompt response, but I was already aware of all this information.
I found the manual that is being offered to us, the HC8440, which is apparently the same as the HC8445.
When it says to remove 1/2 cm of metal from the “-” side of the battery, I don’t know how to do that?
A video would be helpful.
Once this is done, do these batteries become standard “rechargeable batteries”; can we therefore use any rechargeable battery, preferably PHILIPS?
As for the adapter, I would also like a photo? = not in the manual. However, what do you mean by “positive center”? I have changed many faulty adapters but have never concerned myself with this information which I have never heard of before.
Is the HC8445 headset compatible with the HC8440 base?
THANK YOU in advance. -
A cutter should allow the removal of the plastic coating at the bottom of the battery.
This feature must come from the fact that the contacts on the headset for the negative part are not located at the back, as usual, but slightly higher on the perimeter of the battery.
The only photo of the power adapter is here

Here is a model that should fit

Center positive means that the external part of the 2.5mm jack is the negative pole, and that the interior hole is the positive pole

For me, HC8440 is the reference for headset + base

THANK YOU very much
I am well aware of these adapters, but I learned what "positive" and "negative" are.
We can therefore use standard rechargeable batteries while making sure to remove about 1/2 cm on the " - " side because I understood that the charging of PHILIPS batteries, on this device, occurs on the sides [metal part] and not on the bottom like standard batteries?
THANK YOU
