Which dictaphone should I choose to record university lectures?

Hello,
I'm looking for a good dictaphone to record my university lectures so that I can clearly hear the teacher's voice. I've already tried using my phone, but the sound was inaudible..

Hello,

None, only the fact of getting closer to the source (microphone on the teacher's table, if it doesn't move or clipped to his collar or positioned in front of a speaker could allow this feat).

At worst, you take an electret microphone and extend it with a mono extension (making sure not to stretch a trip hazard wire in the amphitheater), at best you get a transmitter receiver that the teacher would pin to his collar (not easy, but the only effective method apart from having a boom operator follow him step by step).

So, an audio recorder with a directional mic, or even with a shotgun mic, because with unidirectional or omnidirectional, the sound coverage will not be adequate unless we place the mic under the speaker's nose.

Discretion is not a requirement for getting a good sound recording.
If one wants to be discreet, they need to turn to spying devices, but the quality will not be there.
Moreover, it is not prohibited to record or film classes at university for private use. However, it is forbidden to use them for public, commercial purposes, or to harm anyone.

Hello, it seems to me that it's completely illegal, especially if the teacher is not informed.
You can't keep a record of someone's words like that; the best thing is to learn how to take proper notes, as it also prevents doubling the workload by re-listening to all the lessons twice.

There is no illegality in recording a teacher's class, even if they are not informed, as long as the use remains private.

In my day, the student association provided handouts, but not in all subjects because some teachers opposed it: we are dealing with a different concept, that of intellectual property, which prohibits publishing someone else's writings without their consent.

Courses are considered as speeches and lectures and therefore protected as works of the mind under Article L112-2 (2°) of the CPI.

The same article gives examples such as oaths and pleadings, but it leaves the list open as it states "and other works of the same nature."

Practice does not legitimise the violation of copyright, and I think that teachers turn a blind eye as long as the exchange of these recordings takes place among students for non-profit purposes.

So yes, in principle, it is prohibited if not requested/reported. That doesn't stop some from doing it, but that doesn't mean it's allowed. Just look online.

In any case, as highlighted by other speakers, without being next to the teacher, it's a mission impossible, unless maybe with directional spying equipment :-)

No, not really: copyright is the same whether the student copies verbatim on paper or computer (even using notes) what the teacher says or records it, and it is therefore not opposable to the student who copies these courses only for themselves.

What they are not allowed to do is distribute it or use even excerpts "for educational or research purposes" without citing the source.

But that is indeed not the question.
