Should I change my network card?

Hello,
I have fiber, Free. They installed an adapter to output via Ethernet.
Question, do the Ethernet outputs from the box lose anything compared to optical? To benefit from the speed on my PCs, do I need to change the network card? If so, which one for the desktop? And how do I do it for the laptops?
Thank you in advance

Configuration: Android / Chrome 91.0.4472.120

    Hello,

While waiting for responses from the specialists:

There are several Freeboxes, with different characteristics, and therefore different performances.

Fiber optics serve up to the box, after which it's another matter, either Ethernet at 100 Mb/s or Gigabit at 1000 Mb/s.

Depending on this network card of your PC, you will have this speed, which is very theoretical downward signal, meaning coming from the internet. However, the actual speed is significantly different, varying according to your location, traffic, and immediate environment (shared or individual housing). Gigabit cards have fairly comparable performances, in any case, you won't perceive the differences in practice.

Laptops work in the same way through wired connection (Ethernet). Over Wi-Fi, speeds depend on both the version of Wi-Fi (and thus the age of the laptop) and usage conditions (distance, obstacles, electrical devices, etc.).

    Best regards

"I have fiber, free. They installed an adapter for Ethernet output".

Like seb77150, I don’t understand what you mean. You might be talking about the fiber box they installed. It has Ethernet outputs, probably up to 1Gb/s. If your PC isn’t too old, it should have a Gigabit Ethernet port, hence a maximum speed of 1Gb/s. That shouldn’t be a problem. Maybe check the category of the RJ45 cables provided. If they are category 5, buy some category 6 or 7.

    Hello,
with a pop, you can go up to 2.5 Gb
with a delta, you can go up to 5 Gb
of course, your motherboard must also support these speeds and, of course, this is via Ethernet.

The revolution goes up to 1Gb.
Test your Ethernet speed already to see what you have.

You might want to talk about the small box that allows the fiber connection to the Revolution box. You have a speed of 1Gb/s. As I already mentioned, if you don't have a very old PC, your motherboard has an Ethernet port with a maximum speed of 1Gb/s. So no problem.

      Hi

By the way, it's called the ONU box and as mentioned by other participants, it has no impact on your PCs' connection to the box.
