Mobile wireless hotspot: Unable to obtain IP address

Good evening,

I’m asking for help on this forum because I’m in distress and I desperately need help! Here is my problem. I’m connected via an Ethernet cable on my laptop, a PC that also serves as a wireless mobile hotspot for my phone, which I connect to it to access the internet.

But since yesterday (right after a Windows 10 update), I can’t reconnect there, and the message on my phone says "Cannot obtain an IP address" and I can’t connect at all.

I googled around (notably on an Orange forum) and I saw the following solution:
In the network settings I’m trying to connect to on my phone:
- Display advanced options
- "IP settings" I switch from "DHCP" to "Static"
- "IP address" I enter: 192.168.1.151
- automatically the gateway fills with: 192.168.1.1
- Network prefix length: 24
- DNS 1: 8.8.8.8 (Google)
- DNS 2: 8.8.4.4 (Google)
If I enter these settings, my phone connects instantly to my network, except that once online, everything is frozen, as if I had no internet connection.

I also tried with my mobile network provider Red (SFR) DNSes but that led to the same thing ...

Before doing all this, I also reset my computer’s network settings but nothing helped.

If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears :)

Hoping for quick help, thanks in advance!

    <update>:</update>

My problem has been resolved since last night, but bad news: it’s a big bug following the Windows 10 1909 update that fixed it.

Let me explain: the Windows update is surely the cause of the mobile hotspot bug. While trying to solve it, I had a Fatal Error and blue screen (quite a panic in the process) and I managed to resolve that issue by consulting other forums that deal with this topic. When my PC returned to normal, I could connect without any problems, and my mobile wireless access issue was resolved.

Well, from what I understand, this problem was due to the update, nothing more, but it was annoying.

Hoping to have helped someone :)

    Hello everyone!

I’m new here and I want to help you. I had the same problem but I was able to solve it by myself.

First, go to the "Network and Sharing Center" and make sure the network cards are up to date and working. To share a connection, you will need 2 functional network cards (the one that receives and the one that shares)

Next, check if you have the connection on your PC and if so, that means the card that allows you to have Internet on your PC is working. So you must then right-click on it (I’m talking about the card that receives the internet that already makes your PC work) and go to PROPERTIES. At the top of this window, you should see "Network Management" and "Sharing". Go to "Sharing" and you’ll see something like "Internet Connection Sharing" and just below a checkbox (Allow other ....this computer). Check this box and then select the second card (the one that shares) and finally OK.

I think if you do the same thing, it should work without any problem.

    Thank you :)

      Hello,
I currently have the same problem as mentioned above. I have tried your method several times but my phone still displays "IP address not found". Maybe I didn’t connect the two correct network cards? (I currently have the Ethernet cable card linked to the Wi‑Fi one). Could you help me?
      Thank you

      Hello,
I have the same problem, I tried to do as you said but when I enable sharing on the map and I click ok, I get this message:

"an error occurred while enabling internet sharing. Internet sharing cannot be activated. A network connection is already configured with the IP address required for automatic addressing."

I’ve had this problem for 3 years and I haven’t resolved it despite applying updates. Today I’m on 20H2.

Please help me solve this problem, please?

        Hello,

The reason for this sharing problem that is impossible with Windows 10 in Hosted Network mode and Ad-hoc mode for certain Intel Wi-Fi network cards is found here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000023257/wireless/intel-wireless-products.html
