Hello,

I am currently working on a rather complex Illustrator file. Unfortunately, I am now unable to open it. Illustrator consistently returns this error message:

"Insufficient memory to perform the operation"

I don't really understand since I have 8GB of RAM and at the time of opening Illustrator (version CS5), I am barely at 60% memory usage.
The same applies to virtual memory, where even boosting it excessively does not resolve the issue.

All the memory info in this screen:

At the time of the screenshot, I was at 14GB of virtual memory; I even tested it at 100! It didn’t change anything.

The file is not too large (95MB).
However, it contains many effects (Outer Glow) and a large raster image (jpeg).
But I can’t open the document to reduce these if they cause any problems.

I cleared the cache, ran CCleaner. Nothing helped.

Yes, it's possible; decompressing a JPG requires a lot of memory resources... and a large file doesn't help the situation...

Try this...
Rename your large AI file to PDF, open it in Acrobat...
Delete your image.
Open the PDF again in Illustrator and import your image preferably in PSD format and as a link.

Thank you very much for your answers, I will try that.
I'm just not used to working with images in Illustrator. But since this one is vital for my document, I will give it a shot.

However, if the image is 3MB in JPEG format, it is much larger in PSD (Photoshop) format.
Is that normal or did I do something wrong during the export?
(It is 138MB if I don't reduce its dimensions in length/width)
