Hello,
Good evening,
I need help: for the past few weeks I've been pulling my hair out when I open my Thunderbird mailbox:
I start by getting the message indicated in the "Subject" and I wait a very long time with sometimes a message indicating that the Imap server has disconnected. We wait, we restart and eventually get the received messages; at that point, if I go to the trash or quarantine, rinse and repeat, new message and waiting or disconnection from the Imap server.
I am on W10 with an @club-internet.fr address, Imap server sfr.fr port 993, smtp.sfr.fr server port 465. I believe I understood from the forum that my problems come from the SFR server but I don't know what to do. If I uninstall Thunderbird and reload it (I've backed up my profile), could that solve my problem?
Do you have any ideas to help me?
Thank you in advance.
Michel

Configuration: Windows / Firefox 64.0

Hello,

The problem is indeed with SFR's IMAP server.
Uninstalling / reinstalling Thunderbird won't change anything because it is completely innocent.
  • Make sure the connection security is set to SSL with port 465 for the outgoing SMTP server.
  • Try setting up the same account in Thunderbird, but using POP (port 995, SSL) with a limited duration for keeping emails on the server (just long enough for other devices to read the same emails). Only the received messages will then be imported, without synchronizing other folders (sent, trash, quarantine) and it won't go through the IMAP server anymore. Furthermore, this configuration is more secure because with IMAP, if for any reason the emails disappear from the server, they disappear from all devices using IMAP as well.

This configuration allows only a minimal number of emails to be left on the server, significantly limiting the risks of hacking and loss of messages.

Thank you very much for this quick and clear response; I may switch to Pop but I will wait a bit to see if I can get in touch with SFR. I saw that some had this problem with Orange and it was resolved by the ISP. In any case, thanks again.

If you switch to POP, you will receive your messages in the "Inbox" folder of your account, just like in IMAP.

What you do with the organization is up to you. A good practice is to avoid stacking hundreds of emails in the inbox and to organize emails by subject into subfolders within Local Folders. Periodically delete or "clean as you go" those that are no longer relevant.
The Thunderbird profile contains ALL emails from all accounts, whether POP or IMAP. No difference.
The difference lies at the server level. In POP, sent emails, drafts, and trash are not included.

An email is moved by right-clicking / move or by click-and-dragging to the destination folder.

WARNING!
If you switch to POP, the Thunderbird account will be set by default to delete emails from the server after 14 days. All your current emails will be affected. This can be changed in the account settings if needed.

To switch to POP:
- Define the same account a second time under a different name or modify the name of the IMAP account before creating the POP account: You cannot have two accounts with the same name.
- Move the received and sent emails that you want to keep from the IMAP account to their counterparts in the POP account
- Delete the IMAP account
- Delete sent emails from the server.
