How to disable Microsoft Security Essentials

Hello,
Due to a system disk failure, I reverted to an older version of Win 10. On this version, I can't activate Windows Defender because Win detects another antivirus. I specify that I have no other antivirus on this computer, EXCEPT for a remnant of Microsoft Security Essentials inherited from Win7 before the migration. The problem is that I can't find it anywhere in the control tools: neither in the task manager nor in the list of installed programs. Therefore, I can't disable or remove it.
All the consulted sites assume that you just need to look for it in the list of installed programs and remove it. Unfortunately, that's not my case.

Thank you for any help on this matter.

Edit: on the MS site, I read that simply installing an antivirus would cause Defender and Essentials to disable themselves. I installed AVG, but Security Essentials is still active!!

Configuration: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3, AMD Phenom II X4 965, Win10

Regards,

Hello, try to reinstall it; and then uninstall it?

Best regards

Hello and thank you for your responses.
@Aranud87: unfortunately, this post does not address the case of MSSE on Win10. Furthermore, as I mentioned in my question, I see no trace of MSSE activity: neither in the list of services nor in the list of active tasks. However, I know it is active because when I try to enable Win Defender, Windows tells me that another antivirus is active. Also, Windows Update regularly downloads MSSE updates for me.
@e.t: I tried downloading it and then installing it. The installation stops right away with the message: "MSSE is not required for this version of Windows, please enable Win Defender" !!
I’m still looking…

Hello,
I apologize, there is an error in my response to Aranud87: read Win7 and WinVista instead of Win10. Indeed, the link refers to MS solutions for Win7 and WinVista versions.
Thank you.

Hello.

You can TRY this method even if it's not the same antivirus >>>

https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-35415540-impossible-de-supprimer-le-dossier-avira#p35418415

See you . . .

PS = Windows Defender is sufficient on its own for Windows 10. Admittedly, it's not at the top of the performance list, but it has improved significantly with Win 10.

Hello.
How exactly did you revert to this old version of Windows 10?

Because by default, Microsoft Essential Security (MES) has no place on Windows since Windows 8, replaced by Windows Defender, which is much more efficient than the former (especially since Windows 10). It should have been completely removed during the said migration.

If the proposed solutions don't work, I recommend a complete reinstallation of Windows 10, with the help of Microsoft support and their dedicated tools for installing Windows 10.

https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/windows/r%C3%A9installer-windows-10-d8369486-3e33-7d9c-dccc-859e2b022fc7

If I were dealing with Windows 7 or earlier, I would have thought twice before reinstalling in your case, but with W10, I don't even think. It's so much more "simple" and safe than other tinkering, especially since downgrading to another version of Windows 10 may have created additional issues that are still undetected.

Hi Ieenvol

>>> It's so much more "simple" and safe than other hacks <<<

Except that... if you've installed quite a few personal software, you'll have to reinstall them all one by one! And more, if among these there are some with activation keys, it becomes a nightmare!

We try to fix things first and if really everything has been attempted, then yes, we can move on to the extreme solution. But performing system reinstalls at every opportunity, personally I'm against it.

See you!

Yes, I agree, hence my "if the proposed solutions don't work", but sometimes it's quicker to reinstall all the software one by one than to struggle for days to fix this type of problem...

As you said, if he has certain software that is a bit of a pain (like licensed ones, for example), it's better to avoid reinstallation if possible.
But that's for him to tell us.
It would be interesting to know which personal software he has because if he doesn't have much...

He can always create a bootable USB drive to use the Windows 10 repair tools, just in case it solves the problem.

PS: I experienced this at work.
2-3 days to fix a software issue when one day, maybe 1.5 days, would have been enough to restore everything after reinstallation, including user data (lots of small Excel spreadsheets...) .

Good evening,
Thank you all for your contributions.
So I will try to respond in order.

@jojolaguitare: I'm not very keen on deleting keys in the registry --> to be used only as a last resort. Yes, I agree about Defender, and that is why I'm trying to activate it unsuccessfully because MSE is active!

@leenvol and jojolaguitare: the PC was running on Win7. In 2016, I took advantage of an MS offer that provided free Win10 to migrate my PC. The migration went well and I ended up with MSE. I installed all my software: office, video editing (Pinnacle-Studio), photos, DVD compression + all the usual utilities on Win... I immediately created a clone of the system disk. Then in 2017, don't ask me how I did it, but I managed to disable MSE and thus activate Defender.
At the beginning of last week, my system disk failed :-((). I went back to the clone and.... here comes MSE again!!! And there, my memory is failing on the method used in early 2017 to get rid of MSE.
Leenvol, I agree with jojolaguitare that I don't feel up to starting from a fresh Win10 installation.

Oh, I should point out one important thing: for my data, I use a dedicated disk (1 TB) separate from the system disk which only contains Win10 and the programs. And I have a third disk that I use for working on videos and photos. The data disk is backed up every month on an external disk.

Indeed, with so many software options, it's understandable not to be eager.

Try to search using the "search" tool as suggested by Jojolaguitare, at least to see if the file exists.

A more experienced person with FRST reports may be able to help you.

Hello.

>>> I'm not really keen on deleting keys in the registry --> to be used only as a last resort <<<

I didn't talk about the registry at all, but about "searches" on the local C: drive. Just type Microsoft Security Essentials in the upper right corner and let the search run until it's finished (green bar).

Well, since the topic is in the Virus/Security forum, a Helper will quickly be able to find traces of this M.S.E and eradicate them with an FRST report.

See you later . . .

Hello,
yes, it's true you didn't mention deleting a key in the registry, but it was the link you provided me that recommended it. QED. Thank you

Good evening,
Okay, I was able to disable MSE and enable Defender. Here’s how:
- Left click the start button, scroll through the list of programs until you find MSE,
- Right click --> More --> Run as administrator (respond YES to Do you want to allow this....)
- And there’s the miracle: the "disable" button (I don’t know why, for me it was in English "Turn Off") is right there in the middle of the screen. You just have to click.
- MSE is disabled,
- By going through the settings --> security, I enabled Defender.
Not really rocket science.
Thank you all for your contributions.

Hello.

Still strange this problem . . .

Part of the Microsoft tutorial

>>> If you are using Windows 10, you cannot get Microsoft Security Essentials.<<<

https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/office/activer-ou-d%C3%A9sactiver-s%C3%A9curit%C3%A9-windows-888b963f-8dde-7952-a2e7-a2301879472d

>>> - MSE is disabled, not really rocket science. <<<

Actually yes we didn't help much . . . But if it works like that, that's great.

Good luck . . . Bye

Hello,
<<Actually, yes, we haven't been much help . . . >>
I don't see it that way because, through your successive responses, you gradually guided me towards the solution. Without that, I would still be struggling between installing other antivirus programs and using utilities to remove software.

Yes, after reading a few articles about migrating from MSE to Defender, I also find it weird that I ended up with MSE. But still, I don't understand why MS didn't program Defender in such a way that the activation button would not be disabled when the already installed AV was MSE. That would have been the simplest way to ensure a smooth transition if the migration to Win didn't do it (as was my case).
Finally, two images: one with the general information of my system, the other with the current state of my AV protection.

Off topic: finally, I would like to point out that after rebooting from the clone, with Malekal's advice (thank you!), I installed Win Update Minitool to control Windows updates. This allowed me to defer the installation of 1803 for the time being. In April/May, it had messed up my little home network (no more visibility between machines EXCEPT for the computer I kept under Seven). I regularly transfer large volumes between machines. And while I'm at it, I'm also blocking the updates for MSE, which I continue to receive, by the way!

Thanks again to everyone!

>>> This allowed me to postpone the installation of 1803 for now. In April/May <<<

Why not, but... 1809 is coming up fast in October!

https://lecrabeinfo.net/windows-10-october-2018-update-redstrone-5-version-1809-changelog-liste-nouveautes.html

Maybe it will get rid of MSE which has become useless on your PC?

See you...
