Hello,

Without me doing anything special, all my folders that were on the Desktop are now on iCloud Drive; I want to find them back on the desktop

how to do it? I’m trying to move some folders from iCloud Drive to the desktop and I get the following message: see attached image

I see that "Documents stored in iCloud Drive are synced across all your devices and accessible on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC, or on iCloud.com." ; but that doesn't interest me.

thank you
Françoise

Hello Françoise,

You checked the box "Optimize Mac Storage"...

In this case, when you run out of space on the Mac, iCloud moves the least used files to the cloud.

Thank you, Francis
However, there was still at least 40 gigabytes on the hard drive, too bad if I made a mistake...
Apple, whom I spoke to on the phone yesterday, is making me perform an operation that tends to retransmit the files from iCloud Drive to the desktop; am I sure to retrieve my initial setup?
For now, only 26 gigabytes have been transferred in 16 hours... At this rate, it will take me a week!
If I do a migration from my last Time Machine backup, is it better?
Thank you
Françoise

Time Machine will be faster, that's true, as it is not dependent on your internet connection speed, but are you sure you'll retrieve the most recent versions of your files?

If you think it will take too long from the Apple server, it means you must have had a much larger volume than the 26 GB already recovered (so your remaining 40 GB must have been insufficient), and if you really have much more than the GB already recovered, there is a high risk of restoring outdated files from Time Machine.

In any case, you should uncheck that infamous box to remain in control of where your files are located.

1 _ I will go through Time Machine, via the Migration Assistant utility.

2 _ I will restore my files one by one and check each time how much space I have left on my hard drive

3 _ But how do I interrupt the process that is running on iCloud Drive?

4 _ Should I delete all the files on iCloud Drive before starting Time Machine?

I should be able to recover my files with Time Machine, at least initially all the most important ones, as I have a recent backup

Thank you for your help and your response
Have a good day
Françoise

Do not delete anything from iCloud Drive before you have finished and verified your Time Machine recovery.

I don’t know how to stop the ongoing process; you would need to be in front of the Mac for that and know how it was initiated, but I think it should be quite simple, a box to check in an activity window? Or something fairly mundane in the menu bar...?
