Keops Neo 500GB Multimedia Drive Solved

Question

Hello everyone.
Here is my problem, I just acquired a Keops Neo 500GB multimedia hard drive, I'm transferring my videos (PC-->multimedia) but when I connect it to the television nothing shows on the screen, yet everything is fine on the hard drive.
My configuration is:
Intel P4 3GB
Graphics card 512MB
Memory 1024
Windows XP Home SP2
Do you have a solution? Thank you...

I had the same problem when purchasing this equipment. Behind the device, there is a jumper, which is a strip of plastic covering two straight pins.
Depending on where you place them (there are three or four positions, I can't remember), your films will be visible on the TV or not.
Only one position allows reading on both the PC and the TV; move the jumper, try slave or master... it's written small.
Finally, it worked for me.

without being sure of what I think, check the partition format type on this disk, is it FAT or NTFS?

To find out if it's FAT or NTFS, when it's connected to your PC, right-click on the drive and then on Properties.

Yes! That's exactly the problem. A media that is supposed to be used must be formatted in FAT32.

Solution because XP does not allow formatting a disk larger than 32GB in FAT, you can use Gparted or the small utility like fat32format, both of which are free.

For fat32format, you can download it from the web and then you need to unzip it and go to console mode to run it.

2- Then unzip it to the root of C:\

3- then from Run type cmd and once on the black screen of the console type cd\ to place yourself at the root of C:\

4- Once on C:\ you type fat32format.exe X: Replace the letter X with that of your external drive, Attention! not to mix up the letters or you'll format in fat the drive designated by the letter entered.

Don't forget to press the Enter key after each command entered and to leave a space between fat32format.exe and the letter of your drive to format. Also be aware that formatting erases everything on the designated drive.

I'm sorry, but I can't help you more as I've never used this type of media. One thing I am sure of is that only the FAT format is accepted for the TV to read files on this media.

Hi! So my problem seems to be solved, in a last-ditch effort I put the firmware from the CD into the multimedia player, pressed the update button and miraculously after restarting the multi-player everything was recognized, however everything is a mess and marked in all the folders "bizzzzaaaarrrrdddd!!!!" I have exactly the same problem as you. I bought a multimedia player with a Neo Keops 500GB hard drive from Pixmania. The order arrived with an installation CD containing drivers and firmware for Windows 98, a bit outdated don't you think??? We are already at Vista. It's impossible to download them from the manufacturer's site; there's nothing available to download, and Pixmania's customer service never answers. I spend hours on the phone with no results.  I was able to format the hard drive by installing it directly in place of my hard drive on the PC with an installation CD. Then I copied my photos and videos, but in the Keops menu, they all appear in the same place; there is no separation between video, music, etc.  All files appear together in all categories, and the photos and music do not play automatically; you have to press play every time. I partially worked around it by partitioning the disk into 3 primary partitions and ... it works (in the sense that I can find my AVIs on the TV) for the first partition. For the rest, nothing at all. It depends on the PC I use to format it: from WinXP Pro, it's fine. From Win XP, it doesn't work. I had the same problem as you, I solved it by partitioning it into 2 (2 x 250 GB), and since then everything has been going well. For your information, I connected the hard drive as the master on my tower and booted from my XP Pro CD thinking I would have the option to format it as Fat32, option not possible, so I formatted it to NTFS and then partitioned it into 2! On HD1 I put my music and on HD2 I put all my movies, and since then everything works great!!

In the booklet, it talks about main partitions. Once your partitions are created, you connect your hard drive as a slave or with CabSelect and boot from your system disk and format the created partitions on your hard drive. As for the firmware, don't worry, it should be on the enclosure because I formatted everything and it still works!! I had the same problem and I solved it by creating 2 primary partitions of 250 GB formatted in NTFS. Since then, everything has been working perfectly: I can see the list of all the video files I copied from my PC on the TV, and I can play them perfectly. I think the Neo software cannot handle large volumes.

But now, I don't dare save anything on it... just imagine that I'm using it for backup, among other things, and that I still have to keep everything on my PC's hard drive, just in case the Keops bugs!! I bought it to free up space on my PC's hard drive from videos, for example, that take up a lot of space! So for now, I've decided to run tests... to put different types of files on it and see if the problem recurs! As for using it as a multimedia drive, I plan to partition drive E again, for example, and convert it to FAT32, if that's the only solution to make it work on the TV! Hello,  When installing the hard drive, it's true that nothing happens, nothing is recognized, I think it's due to the firmware being too old. I formatted it with a Windows installation CD by opening the case and installing the hard drive directly in place of my hard drive with an XP installation CD, it recognized it and then formatted it. I reassembled it and plugged it back in, and voila, it works. Then I created files, divix, photos, movies, and copied my photos and movies into these files. It works perfectly on the TV; the only bug is that I have a root file that appears in the menu, and in the dropdown menu, all my directories appear in the whole keops menus, they all appear in the same place, there is no separation between video, music, etc. In the movie menu, I have all my directories with movies, divix, photos, etc. In the music menu, it's the same, etc.

Hello everyone,  I found your discussion (unfortunately too late as I had just acquired this hard drive) and surprisingly on my part I connected it to my PC via USB, formatted in NTFS (1 partition: my hard drive is 400GB) and everything works, well almost, because when I connect it to the PC I have bugs (my workstation freezes and other things) so I unplugged the USB and everything went back to normal...  After that I realized that when I had this bug, by pressing the “play” button on the hard drive everything went back to normal....  But here I have 2 or three questions:  Is it normal that you can't turn it off when it's connected to the PC??  Do you still have the folder management problem (everything is mixed up and in all categories: as it's been like this for me from the start) has anyone been able to resolve this issue (because I think it only manages files and not folders which is very annoying for audio albums and photo albums)? For me, to turn it off, I click on the USB icon in the taskbar that allows me to disconnect my hard drive; which I do and it turns off by itself: well, I mean it goes into sleep mode at that moment!  I've put both folders and single files on it: there's nothing to be done! It doesn't see anything on the TV!  Regarding the firmware, here's what I read in the menu/TV:  Microcode Version: MT_35_P6_12_01 .... but without a specific date! By the way, is this the firmware... I don't know! If someone can confirm it for me!  I just took a look at the manual, and it is clearly stated "HDD File System: TV and PC Mode FAT 32 and NTFS, which seems to say that reformatting to FAT32 is unnecessary???!!! Strange! So, at worst, you reinstall it, you copy the firmware (alone without the folder) to your hard drive and you go to setup firmware update and you start the update (that's how I did it), otherwise to see if it's there, you go into setup and in the firmware section it tells you the version you have (with its date).

No, there's no miracle in that, just stubbornness: mandatory step, format to FAT32, otherwise nothing at all! I don't know how those who stayed in NTFS managed! I did a lot of tinkering today, deleting, merging partitions, formatting... lots of stuff I had never done before! I'm proud of myself: to summarize, I now have 2 partitions, a 250GB E drive in NTFS and a 250GB F drive also in FAT32 (which I formatted with the .exe file mentioned above) for everything I want to watch on my TV! Oh yes, one last point, it really distinguishes things: movie files in movie, mp3s in music, and jpegs in photos! It even manages folders, which you can find in all directories! Good luck to others!

Hello thivame! Actually, I didn't do anything special, except that after reformatting to fat32, I finally noticed that my files were visible on my TV and in the right categories!! When I talk about folders, I mean folders that contain files: for example, I copied some DVDs to my PC that generated 2 files, AUDIO_TS (empty) and VIDEO_TS (files like vob, ifo, bup....) I can read them! That's it! I confirm again that the mpegs are in the movies section; the mp3s in music, and my jpegs in photos! Did you notice a difference in display on your TV with your # HDDs: fat32 and ntfs? What I still find strange is that your keops works without any problem in ntfs! What's crazy is that no one has exactly the same problem! I think we'll have to deal with it; we'll probably never get an answer! Indeed, my hard drive works in NTFS without issues, and in FAT32 as well, but I noticed that I had some interference on the tested TV screens (kind of lines of interference running down the screen). However, I can't remember if I saw the same issue in FAT32. Regarding your folders, I didn't quite understand... let me explain: I created a folder named "action/police" and, of course, I put some movies of that genre inside... but the folder "action/police" appears in "video", in "music", and in "photo" as well... I'm only talking about the folder, as the files themselves are only recognized in video (which is normal). Hello everyone  I feel like we've really been fooled by this player.  For my part, it's currently back at the Pixmania customer service, because ever since I switched it to FAT (with 3 partitions), the video interface was completely dead: a picture with stripes, freezes, restarts, well, it was like fiddling with an antenna to find a channel. Actually, it took me a while at first to understand that the internal hard drive was not formatted. Which is strange since it forces the user to open the device while it's still under warranty. Anyway. Since I hadn't read the forums beforehand, I formatted it to NTFS. I was able to copy movies, photos, mp3s, etc., from my PC. But my question isn't about that today. With this player that I bought in August, I have never been able to read a photo, an mp3, or a video from my camera (which outputs AVI), I was able to watch a few movies, but not all of them (about 30%). Hello! Listen, yes, afterwards quite a few people managed to get it working properly, but by formatting it to FAT32 without exception! Reminder, mine was originally formatted to NTFS! What I did was create 2 partitions: one that I left in NTFS for my PC backups + one that I formatted to FAT32 for all the multimedia I want to watch on my TV! And everything works more or less correctly! Except for fast forward which I no longer touch, because the HDD freezes at that moment, who knows why? : a youthful error of this type of product, I suppose! Good luck anyway!

Because before I was using NTFS, I had created different directories, and I could only read about 30% of the DivX files, while these are DivX files that I converted to DVD to play on a stand-alone DivX player that worked. My DivX player is already 4 years old and it plays everything, but it’s not very fast... So on this forum or another, I saw that I needed to switch to FAT, so I did it with Partition Magic, and I created 3 different partitions. Hi djgo996! I don't understand why there are 3 separate partitions for different types of files! The advantage of Neo is that you can just throw everything into your FAT32 partition, and it sorts them into their respective categories like a pro (it works great for me! I think others have had issues, though!). All your DIVX, VOB, MPEG... files go into MOVIE; your MP3s... go into MUSIC; your JPEGs... go into PHOTOS; etc., etc.... There's nothing else to do! Aside from managing folders, which you find in the main menu of all the categories, but if it's a folder containing movies, for example, you'll only be able to access it under MOVIE.

Hello,  I'm reaching out to you with a slightly different problem!  My TV has no trouble accessing the content of my 300GB Kheops, but my computer (Windows XP) does! My computer can access the Kheops, but when I browse its contents, nothing appears, as if it were empty, even though it is half full and the explorer is able to show me its volume and free space! My files have become ghosts on my computer! They are there, but I can neither see them nor access them.  But the main problem is: I used my hard drive to transfer all my data and format my computer, including my master's thesis!  So I can't format my hard drive at all, otherwise I'll lose everything! Hello,  To recover your data, there is a software that works well even after formatting, it's called Get Data Back. It's a paid software, but I have tested it and it works well.  It generally goes like this:  You mount your hard drive in your PC; the system needs to recognize the hard drive and the drive letter must appear. You launch a scan with Get Data Back it scans the hard drive cylinder by cylinder then you make it restore the data the process is very long; for a 120 GB disk, it took 3 or 4 hours just for scanning, and just as long for recovery. Hello, if you see a message "ROOT" on the TV instead of the files you had already installed, it's simple: delete the files with a .VOB extension or others, as the hard drive only accepts recognized files (.avi, mpeg, mp3, etc. see manual) I had several movies in divx format (.avi) and as soon as I put a .VOB file representing a DVD, I got an error and when I went to the TV to access movies or photo directory, there were no files anymore, just the message "ROOT". I then went to the PC and I had to delete it, I returned to the TV and there was a miracle ^^ all my .avi files and other mp3s and jpeg photos reappeared. It's still outrageous... I too just bought the Kiros Neo 500 GB... same problem, the movies play on the computer but are not recognized by the TV... I see that many people are facing this issue... what is the point of buying a so-called MULTIMEDIA external hard drive if you have to embark on advanced technical modifications (for a novice like me). Is there a real multimedia external hard drive on the market that one can count on? I must say that for a first time this is a big disappointment!!!  I will simply use it as an external hard drive for my computer... it doesn't deserve better. Kiros apparently offers pathetic products, an unavailable customer service (fits right in with the rest)... a scam in summary!!!  This was my rant, but I am so disappointed. Hello, This forum has been very helpful to me as well. On my KEOPS, the TV display of my photo directories and photos wasn't working, even though everything was fine on the hard drive. I contacted NEO's customer service, and they told me I needed to reformat the hard drive to FAT32 instead of NTFS... so they were aware of the issue! My son took care of it (I don't know how to do that), we added photos, videos, music, and since then everything has been working perfectly! I find this device amazing; it's a pity it can't record from the TV...

Hello everyone  Any news,  I sent my Keops back to Pixmania because I had video issues; there were like stripes on the TV, and I had never managed to play an MP3 or a photo on it. So I looked on the forums and saw the NTFS and FAT file systems, but that didn't change anything. I finally received the thing this morning and tried it out, everything works perfectly: photos, videos, and DivX. The technician's report who repaired the device shows that he only reformatted the hard drive. So I checked the file system, and it was in NTFS!!! However, one file is stored on the disk, which is the firmware. I could link it, but I don’t know how to do that; if a mod could kindly give me the procedure...  See you soon

I also had the same issue of not seeing my movies on the NEO disk. Don't look for complications. You need to format your hard drive to FAT32, that's all, the firmware has nothing to do with it, as it is on the card inside. As soon as you are in FAT32, everything will reappear.

The firmware doesn't matter to you, but when you connect your hard drive to your TV, remember to press the green button on your remote several times to find the right channel. Also, avoid creating multiple folders. Start by placing your movies directly in the root of your hard drive.

I have the KEOPS 500GB, and I've noticed that I couldn't read from the folders, they didn't show up... however, everything is displayed in the root, I'm on NTFS, it seems to be working, but there are some issues with sync between the drives and the sound (strangely, the problem resolves itself by fast-forwarding, everything goes back to normal and in sync).   Otherwise, when you put a video file for example that it doesn't recognize, it freezes, and you can't see anything (I tested it with a 720p HD video that it doesn't play, it displays nothing!!)

Hi everyone,  well, I sadly realize that the issues I encountered are well known... :(  I have more or less managed to solve them, hard drive not fixed, not connected and formatted in NTFS. I was already surprised that the manual specifies that you have to dismantle the case to connect the HDD, but oh well.  I opened the case, secured the HDD, connected it, formatted it to FAT32 in a single partition (I don't remember the name of the software, but I can provide it to those who are interested). I then created my folders (videos, music, and photos) and subfolders (movies, manga....)   I now have access to all my files, but...yes, there is still a but..., when I go through the HDD sections (videos, music, and photos), I only have access to the first 83 files, which is quite annoying because I must have about 500 video files (between movies, mangas, and series), the same for music and photos.....  The only way to access all the files is to go through the FILES section of the media. It's not very inconvenient in itself, but I find it a bit silly when you know it is supposed to manage 465GB of raw data but can't display more than 83 files per section......  If someone has managed to make theirs work without any problems, I would appreciate a tutorial ;))

Hi everyone and Happy New Year! I've just skimmed through the forum, and I too had the brilliant idea of buying a NEO KEOPS 300 Go, and I have the SAME problems... The first time I plugged it into my computer, nothing appeared even though the hard drive was half full, then by fiddling with the properties, it managed to show up. When I plugged it into my TV, everything was mixed up, some files didn't show up, I couldn't shut it down... in short, not great. Then I started to "organize" my data: I made "themed" folders for my movies (action, comedy...) and surprise! it's even worse! It shows my folders, but when I go into them, I only get "ROOT"... and then it evolved: I can't even move my "cursor bar" to select my movies... in short, it's a real mess and I'm even more bothered because I live in Tahiti and I bought it from Cdiscount during a stay in France, so the after-sales service is inaccessible now. Now I'm waiting to watch all my movies by connecting it to my computer like a regular hard drive (great use for a multimedia hard drive... it turns out to be an expensive external hard drive...) and then to format it in FAT32. But since I'm not a pro, it might be a bit tricky... Anyway, good luck to you all and if you find a miracle solution: please pass it on!!!

Hello everyone and best wishes!   What a pain this media player is.   Well, I've faced pretty much all the problems you've had. And I decided to tackle it last weekend.  First of all, I wanted to mention that I had already sent the Neo back to Pixmania, and it was returned to me with missing screws and the following note: reformatting the disk (from a technician at NEO). After checking, I verified the file system and it was NTFS!!  Anyway, the files NEO had returned to me (1 movie, 1 mp3, 1 photo) worked perfectly. So I removed them to load it with my media. And then after that, it stopped working. I could see my files when I connected it to the PC, but once on the TV, nothing...  Since then, it was on stand by, until last weekend.  I reconnected it to my PC (via USB), and reformatted it to FAT32 with a free and very simple software from Compuapps called Swissknife V3.  And then, miracle, everything worked from the TV, I was happy!!!  I then decided to load it with my media that are on my PC's hard drive and after an hour of copying (I have 470 GB), it started to smell burnt in the room, I don’t know why but I immediately approached the NEO (I don’t know why, maybe intuition?) and it was definitely him. I opened it up and there was a chip on the hard drive that had burned out. What a hassle!  So I called Pixmania to find out what to do and they told me to return it to NEO, but they didn't have the address. So I searched online and found the site but no address, so I sent them an email to have them contact me.  And now I'm waiting.

I have the same issue. The only thing that works is to switch it from master to slave using the little jumper on the back of the hard drive. Master for watching TV and slave when you put it on your PC. That's all for me, it's simple but it works.

Hello everyone... well for those who still have issues, there are several things to do: format your hard drive to fat32.... so that the PC recognizes it properly set the hard drive to master and no more issues (at least for me on XP) my hard drive reads everything... however, be careful, if the title has certain characters your file will not be visible on the TV but is present (I managed to read a movie that was not displayed, so I just removed the accents, dots, and other characters and it appeared). On the other hand, I find it very weak in terms of sound volume..(I have to set my amplifier between 40 and 50, whereas with my divx player I set it between 25 and 35) does anyone else feel this weakness in sound?? thank you for sharing your impressions and comments let's try to solve this together

Hello everyone! I have a little problem; I was tasked with troubleshooting a multimedia hard drive, a Hitachi 160GB in a NEO USB enclosure. The NEO manual states that the formatting can be either NTFS or FAT32, but just to be sure, I formatted it in FAT32. It works on the TV (except for the audio codec, which isn't my biggest concern), but it doesn't connect to the PC (Windows XP SP3) anymore. The HD was set to cable select, and I changed it to master, as indicated in the NEO manual, but to no avail. There are plenty of drives appearing in My Computer (no network drives, and it goes up to I:), and when I formatted it, it appeared as J:. Since then, it's been acting up; it works on the TV, it's formatted, the computer makes its jingle when I connect/disconnect it, and a line saying "safely remove USB mass storage device" appears when the hard drive is plugged in, but no drive letter is assigned. Oh, I almost forgot... yesterday, by miracle, it appeared for 5 minutes in My Computer as J:, but I can't get it to show up again today. It contained the files I had put on it... the USB ports on the computer work, and the hard drive does too when it's recognized; it's FAT32 and set to master; they see each other, but they don't handshake... If anyone has a clue or any idea, it could save me from a nervous breakdown, I'm mentioning the drive letters because I think it might be masked by another one, and thus it would be recognized as connected but not accessible, although there are no network drives, so that seems unlikely to be the case..  Thanks in advance to anyone who has the slightest idea....

Hello everyone,   I just read this interesting discussion; I also acquired this amazing device,  of which I didn't even know the existence!  I was looking for an external hard drive to expand the 40GB of my laptop, and I stumbled upon this.  This player was immediately recognized by XP, it is preformatted in FAT32.  My difficulty was mainly to connect it to the TV, in fact, I don't have a control screen on the player.  And after a lot of manipulation with the remote, it’s the best!  Movies, slideshows, music   I move it from computer to computer without any issues, just like a super USB stick;  I am thrilled.   It’s all new, I haven’t made a playlist yet.   What’s important to start playback is that it should be in the ROOT directory.   See you soon and don’t worry: it’s perfect!

I had 2 issues that relate to everything I have read above.  The first one, after intensive loading, a burning smell, no more PC recognition, returned to the SAV Pixmania, after 2 months I receive back my Keops Neo 500, I put a few Divx on it everything works on the TV, so I load a good hundred and there just ROOT on the TV and nothing else!  Following everything I read, I deleted everything that didn't have an accepted ending and MIRACLE everything works.  It is formatted in NTFS and has only one partition. Thank you for the good advice and I confirm that a single NTFS partition works and that you can create directories to manage a large number of files.

It works!!! I had the same problems as you with the Keops Neo 500, I also had to format it but directly to NTFS. The Divx worked on the TV, and after adding a few more divx files, and then connecting it to the TV, nothing showed up except ROOT, even though all the Dvix files were there. However, the photos and music were still visible on the TV. There was a thumbs file and a desktop file in the music and photos folder. To fix the problem, I just copied this Thumbs file and this Desktop file from my computer in the video directory and placed them in the divx directory created in Neo, and then everything worked. It is formatted in NTFS as a single partition. A single NTFS partition works well and you can create directories to differentiate the files. However, on the remote control, you need to position yourself on movie to see the films, music to listen to the music, etc., but it works. The Kéops website still hasn't developed a firmware for Vista, unfortunately!

J'ai un NEO ainsi qu'une PEEkBOX.
Le NEO reconnait les disques en NTFS sans problème. Le souci n'était pas là.

N'oubliez pas de configurer l'affichage sur "tout afficher" ou un truc du genre, sinon le NEO affiche MP3, DIVX, PHOTOS, ... mais pas tous en même temps (c'est nul mais bon, c'est comme ça).
Exemple : si l'affichage est réglé sur PHOTOS, alors les dossiers avec DIVX, MP3,... ne s'affichent pas.

Je ne me souviens plus de la manipulation ou de la touche, mais c'est indiqué dans la notice. Pour ma part, je l'ai réglé en permanence sur tous et ça fonctionne.
En plus, le matériel NEO est vraiment de mauvaise qualité, pffff... quand je vois ma PEEKBOX à côté, c'est une Rolls.

Ensuite, pour formater un disque en FAT32 sous XP, tu as essayé la méthode classique :

exécuter -> cmd -> format X:/fs:fat32 (ou X est la lettre du HDD)
Il y a parfois des solutions de druide (arf) plus complexes que celle-là, comme utiliser un canon pour tuer une mouche, m'enfin ;-)

Moreover, although at first glance the command "format" in the command line does not seem to have this restriction, it also fails (after a certain time spent formatting the volume). Alors, il faut partitionner ton disque dur. Moi, je l'ai divisé en 4 partitions et chaque partition, tu la formates en NTFS. Après, c'est bon, ça marchera. Bonne chance !

- Case, remote control and power adapter of very low quality (Case buttons stick, shabby remote control, etc...)
