Hello!
I recently purchased a TV
I decided to connect it to my PC for movie nights (it's more comfortable!).
My big issue is that the TV becomes the primary monitor by default when I plug it into my PC (HDMI vs DVI connection for the PC).
Of course, my PC is in a different room from the TV.
My question: is it possible to change settings BEFORE I connect my TV so that the HDMI connection is not set as the "primary display" by default? (implied: how can I keep my main display regardless of the number of screens connected?) because managing setting changes from the next room is a bit cumbersome with the back-and-forth (I have a wired mouse...)

Hello
unplug your HDMI/DVI cable and press the Windows key on your keyboard (it's the key located at the bottom left between the Ctrl and Alt keys) + P, then select Extend. After that, plug your screen back in, restart your PC, and it should normally be recognized as a secondary display.
To check if your TV screen is recognized as Screen 2, follow these steps:
For your screen:
Start, Control Panel, Change screen resolution,
set your screen to the highest resolution, which is 1920 x 1080, it says recommended.
Orientation: set it to Landscape.
Display: set it to Extend these displays so you'll have your desktop background and shortcuts on your PC screen, and only the desktop background from the PC on your TV screen.

Technique applied unsuccessfully:
The windows+P has its advantages in that I can attempt the screen duplication system, but my desktop ends up being seriously messed up as a result.
The "extend display" trick unfortunately doesn't help :-(
Additional information:
Actually, originally on my PC I have 2 screens (DVI connection)
I can't display all 3 screens at once (graphics card, I suppose).
Currently, this gives me:
No. 1: HDMI connection (=TV)
No. 2: secondary screen
No. 3: primary screen
So I unplug my secondary screen (No. 2 in the Cjoint link)
And then "poof poof", my main screen becomes screen No. 2 and becomes secondary.

I tried in the control panel > screen resolution:
Select screen No. 1 (TV): extend the desktop to this display
Select screen No. 2 (secondary): disconnect this display
If I place my cursor on screen No. 3: I get confirmation that "this is currently your main display" ← very good.
I click "apply", and guess what? -_- my main screen (No. 3) becomes secondary, and my TV becomes primary.
What am I missing?
:-(
When the 3 screens are connected:
select screen n°1 (TV): "extend the desktop to this display"
select screen n°2 (secondary): "disconnect this display"
"apply",
my main screen (n°3) becomes secondary, and my TV becomes the main one.
→ selection of screen n°3 (PC): "make this display the primary display"
(a complicated task because it has to be managed from a distance, but only once!)
and HOP
if I disable a screen/reactivate & co, my screen n°3 remains the main screen :-)
Thank you very much Letotof for your valuable help!
