Hello,
I just bought an iBook G4 - 1.33 GHz - 1.5 GB memory - software installed Mac OS X 10.4.11.
The seller was unable to reset the PC because he lost the installation CDs. So I am left with files from the previous owner and I would like to erase everything.
I noticed two files present on the hard drive, namely BaseSystem.pkg and OSInstall.mpkg; when I try to launch the latter, it doesn't want to install because the volume is in use. Can you help me? The hard drive seems to be 37.1 gigabytes. This is my first Mac and I'm just starting out. So I am at ground zero with Macs. Thank you.

Hello,
You should never buy a Mac, of any kind, without its installation disks, which are originally provided with all Macs.
If possible, you can either ask the seller for them or cancel the purchase and get a refund.
This Mac model was originally shipped with Mac OS 10.4 since it belongs to a series made between October 2004 and July 2005, and it is the fastest of that series.
If the seller refuses, you still have the option to find either a universal disk for 10.4 or 10.5 (Leopard), the latest OS supported by this Mac. This would allow you to reformat the hard drive, erasing all previous data and installing a fresh OS, but the drawback is that these disks are very rare on the second-hand market, and you must not buy just any disk; they are not all compatible.
If you do not have an installation disk, did he give you the administrator password? If not, are you sure that the person who sold it to you is indeed the owner?
Please come back with details or answers to my questions, and we will see about the next information/advice to provide you.
Best regards
